The usual way to test a trailer break away switch is to pull the pin, and make sure the trailer or vehicle brakes engage. To turn the system off, you'd simply reinsert the pin. In that sense, the pin can be used multiple times.

If the pin is pulled because the trailer or towed vehicle has come loose from the tow vehicle, and it isn't damaged in the process from dragging behind the vehicle or damaged in some other way, the pin can be used over and over again.
