Is Brake Light Relay Needed When Flat-Towing 2013 Honda CR-V

Updated 01/11/2016 | Published 01/09/2016

Question:

Have been looking at the Braking System for our RV Mtr Home and Tow Vehicle. The Road Master RM-9400 and the HM56304 wire Kit mention having to use a RM-88400 Brake Light Relay. Is that Relay also needed with the Blue Ox Supplemental Brake System #BRK2012?

The Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit, part # RM-88400 is used when you have combined lighting on your towed vehicle and want to use a supplemental brake system. The easiest way to find out if you need a relay is to turn the engine off and when pushing the brake pedal see if the brake lights come on. If they do, then a brake relay switch is needed. from my research it does not appear you need a brake light relay on your CR-V, but you can check to make sure.

When towing your CR-V, the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Proportional Braking System, part # RM-9400 will work great for you. This system installs without having to splice into your CR-V wiring.

The Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit, part # HM56304 plugs into your vehicle at the connection points located behind the CR-V tail lights and does not require cutting the vehicle wiring.

To connect the vehicle 4-way to your motorhome I recommend the Blue Ox 7-Wire to 4-Wire, part # BX88254.

You will want to check your owners manual to see if you need to pull fuses to flat tow your vehicle. If you find that you do have to pull a fuse or fuses every time you flat tow the vehicle I recommend using a fuse bypass, like part # RM76511. Using a bypass means you can avoid having to pull the fuse every time you tow. Once the bypass is installed you can just flip a switch.

If you do not have base plates or tow bar for your CR-V I recommend part # RM-521567-4 for base plates and part # RM-520 for a tow bar.

For safety cables I recommend part # RM-643.
