A leaf spring's U-bolt attaches the leaf spring is to a trailer's axle

The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

A double-eye leafspring is installed on a trailer's hanger

Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • How To Measure For Replacement Leaf Springs When Current Springs Are Flat
I would be happy to help! When measuring for new leaf springs you need to either take them off of the trailer, or jack up the side of the trailer so that the axle is not carrying any weight. Based on the pictures of the leaf springs on your 2017 Grand Design Momentum 398M with Triple 7000lb axles they do look a bit flat, but when weight is not on them they should get a curve back in them. If you can tell me how long from center of spring eye to center of spring eye the springs are, I...

  • Can I Use Heavier Rated Leaf Springs on Trailer Without Causing Damage
You can use leaf springs that are rated higher than the axle without any issues as long as they measure the correct measurement for your trailer. For example the 6-leaf double eye spring for 7,000 lb axles part # e64SR measures 24-7/8" eye to eye. The only thing you may notice is that the ride may be a bit stiffer with the heavier rated springs. Please keep in mind upgrading to a 8,000 lb spring may require you to switch over to slipper springs instead of double eye springs. Which is...

  • Recommended 7000lb Leaf Springs To Replace Dexter 072-027-00
I do have an option for you, but we do not carry the Dexter 072-027-00 you mentioned. However we do have the etrailer Double-Eye Spring for 7,000-lb Trailer Axles - 24-7/8" Long # e64SR which will be 3/8" shorter but that is still close enough for it to be used without messing up the suspension geometry. I included a video of the # SP-198275 for you to take a look at.

  • Typical Hanger Spacings for Tandem Axle Trailer with 3,500 lb Axles
A lot of it depends on the length of the springs and equalizers that are used. When using Leaf Springs # e64SR with the # AP233 Equalizer Kit and the # H248 Hanger Kit, there should be 29-1/2" between the front and center hangers and 29-1/2" between the center and rear hangers. This should achieve a 4-1/2" clearance between the center of the axle and the trailer frame if you have a 3500 lb axle. I've Provided a diagram that should be helpful. I've also provided a link to our trailer maintenance...

  • Determining The Correct Replacement Suspension Components For A 2018 Keystone Fuzion Toy Hauler
Hey Brian, Starting with the leaf springs, you can go up in capacity but you'd have to go with 8k leaf springs since there aren't 7,500lb options available. The Dexter # DX74XR would be the correct fit since you have a 24-7/8" eye-to-eye measurement. For the equalizers I would definitely switch to something that has built in cushioning to help with ride quality and handle the extreme road shock you've been experiencing. I've seen bolts rub down through the equalizer from years of no...

  • Does Changing From A 4 Leaf To A 6 Leaf Spring Add To Ride Height?
Yes, going from a 4 leaf to a 6 leaf spring would add slightly to your ride height. For example, if the current 4 leaf spring has 3/8" thick leaves, and you go to a 6 leaf spring with 3/8" thick leaves, you would be adding 3/4" of height to the trailer.

The recommended hanger kit for a Triple-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs is part # APTT1. This kit is designed to work on axles with capacities of 2,000 to 7,000 pounds. If your mobile home trailer axle is within this weight capacity this kit should work for you. I attached a picture that has a chart that shows exactly how you should space the axles when used with a 6-leaf spring for 7,000 pound trailer axles like part # e64SR.

  • Recommended Double-Eye Leaf Springs For 2007 Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer
In order to make sure you get the correct replacement parts you will want to take a measurement or two. It would be best to measure the spring while the trailer is lifted and weight is taken off the spring. You need the eye-to-eye measurement to make sure you get the right length spring for your trailer. It is recommended that new leaf springs should be installed on both sides of the trailer to make sure the suspension is equal and performs well. The leaf double-eye leaf springs we...

Hey Robert, I'd be more than happy to help you find the correct leaf spring replacements for your 2017 Heartland Landmark 365 Oshkosh! According to my research your trailer should be equipped with 7K axles so the 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e64SR should be what you need. • Warranty Length and Improvements that Lippert Center Point System Offers to Trailer Installed On
The Lippert Components Center Point by Trailair Air-Ride Suspension Upgrade # LC1565391 that you bought has a 90 day warranty. • Replacement Leaf Springs for Trailer With 25-1/4" Flat Leaf Spring
Hey Rusty! Can you measure the flat length? Check out the help article below which explains how to measure. This is the best solution for worn out leaf springs. Realistically they're probably a little shorter than 24-7/8" which means we might not carry a suitable replacement. The flat measurement of a 24-7/8" leaf spring like the # e64SR would be 26-3/8" since B in the diagram below is 13-3/16" long. This is quite a bit longer than your current 25-1/4" measurement.

  • How to Tell When Travel Trailer Leaf Springs Need to be Replaced
A leaf spring should be replaced if it is badly rusted, has cracks or breaks in its leaves or if it is sagging. A 14-year-old travel trailer could certainly be in need of new leaf springs. The keys to selecting correct replacement leaf springs are to match your axle capacity, number of leaves and spring size. Most axles will have a plate or sticker that indicates the axle's weight rating. It is best to remove a spring from the suspension to check its eye-to-eye length. A spring that is...
