Can Springs Be Upgraded on 2022 Keystone Cougar 316RLS

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/29/2024

Question:

My 2022 Keystone Cougar 316RLS has tandem axles with Lippert Road Armor Equalizers. I currently have PR5 leaf springs 3,000 LB each with 6,000 LB axles and am considering upgrading to PR6 leaf springs 3,500 LB each with the same 6,000 LB axles. Can this be done? I had an RV friend do this and recommended I do the same. I know the length is slightly different 25-1/4” vs 24-7/8”. I am not sure if the PR6 springs can be installed with 6K LB axles and whether or not it would yield any significant benefits or improvements in ride or longevity if they were switched out. Please provide feedback if possible. Thank you for your time.

Hello again Rick; adding leaf springs like the # e64SR or PR6 can be done. When you replace your leaf springs you typically want them to be the same length. This isn't always possible and some slight variance is acceptable. The difference of 3/8" won't hurt anything so that is fine.

Since they're rated for a 7k axle you will have some additional strength in the leaf springs. This can be especially helpful if you're running your trailer close to the GVWR. At the same time, this isn't such a drastic increase that your ride quality will become horrible. Keep in mind, you won't increase your GVWR by adding the higher rated leaf springs.

Hey Rick, how did the upgrade to the PR6 leaf springs work out on your Cougar? Did you notice any change in ride quality or handling after the swap? Your feedback could really help others thinking about the same upgrade.

@RobinH. Hi Robin. Between the upgraded leaf springs and wet bolt kit addition we noticed a significant improvement in the ride and handling of our rig. We are glad we made this upgrade. Thanks again for you support.
