Can A 1,000 lb Leaf Spring Be Replaced With A 1,200 lb Leaf Spring?

Updated 02/13/2026 | Published 02/10/2026

Question:

I have a1986 single axel boat trailer. The current leaf 5 leaf, 34 in slipper springs need replacing. I know the axel is rated for 2000 lbs. is it any problem to go with a slightly higher rated 1200 lb each, total 2400 lb leaf spring? I don’t know the weight of the boat but I’m guessing 1000 to 1200 lbs excluding motor 100 lbs plus gear another 100 lbs. The main concern is will the slightly stiffer ride possibly damage the fiberglass hull. I think it will be fine but I wanted a second opinion before I purchase.

Hey Robert, thanks for reaching out. In most cases, the best practice when replacing leaf springs is to match the axle’s rated capacity. That said, moving from a 1,000 lb spring to a 1,200 lb spring on a 2,000 lb axle is a small increase and is generally perfectly fine. It is not a large enough jump to significantly change the ride quality or create a risk to your fiberglass hull.

New springs may feel a bit stiffer at first and may not flex quite as much as your older ones, especially if the current springs are original and worn. However, that is normal and typically results in improved support and stability instead of a harsh ride.

That said, unfortunately we do not offer a 34" 5-leaf slipper spring, but if you can find one elsewhere, that'll work fine for your setup.

What kind of boat are you trailering?

Thank you for your response. The boat is a 1986 Troller (15 ft fiberglass tri-hull runabout). Pretty standard. The trailer is also 1986. I have no real information/specs on it such as the original weight capacity of the leaf springs. All i know is the capacity of the axle so I think i will be fine with these leaf springs. Again thank you so much for the follow up.

@RobertG Ok nice! Its good you know the axle capacity so as long as you stay in that ballpark with the new springs you will be good to go. Happy to help though. Feel free to come back anytime you need anything!
