Roadmaster Accessories and Parts - RM-766

  • Flat Tow Wiring Harness
  • Battery Disconnect
  • Roadmaster

If you need to disconnect the battery to flat tow your vehicle, you're going to want this kit. It disconnects your battery with the push of a button - much safer and faster than doing it yourself - while keeping your towing accessories charged.

Features:

  • Disconnects your battery with the push of a button
  • Eliminates the inconvenience and danger of pulling your battery cable yourself
  • Provides a positive current source for the breakaway switch and other accessories without draining the battery
  • Includes a corrosion-resistant, marine-grade solenoid with 200-amp constant duty and 600-amp surge
    • Comes pre-assembled for easy installation

Specs:

  • Application: vehicles that require the battery to be disconnected for flat towing - consult your owner's manual
    • Works with almost any 12V battery
    • For gas engine vehicles only

Notes:

  • Not for use with diesel engine vehicles: due to the high compression ratio of diesels, the engine can surge up to 10 times that of a gasoline engine at start up and can cause the solenoid to fail.
  • Disconnecting the battery, whether manually or with this automatic disconnect, will affect your vehicle's electronics. You will need to reset various electrical components in your vehicle following use of this product.
  • A charge line kit (RM-156-25 - sold separately) is recommended if you have a braking system that is using power from the towed vehicle's battery while it is disconnected.

I had a little difficulty finding a good location for the solenoid, but finally found a spot on the radiator bulkhead. Since the photo was taken, I have added silicone boots over all of the solenoid connections.

I highly recommend this battery disconnect for the 2024 GMC Sierra Denali 1500. The electronic parking brake requires the battery to be disconnected while flat towing. GM should have made the vehicle software to not apply the brake when in Tow-mode, this makes it easy to accomplish removing battery power. I mounted the solenoid inside the passenger front quarter panel near the battery to keep the power cables as short as possible. The solenoid must be installed in the vertical position. I chose to mount the actuator button inside just above the OBD-II port under the steering column. Easy access from the driver seat but not visible or in a place that could be accidentally pushed. If you frequently flat tow the GMC/Chevy with electronic parking brakes, this is a must have!

I installed this item, along with the whole towing package. Turned the key and nothing! Checked all the connections then got my volt meter out. Voltage seemed OK but continuity was all wrong. After double checking the wiring diagram, I discovered the battery cables were labeled backwards! Re-connected according to the diagram instead of labels and everything works great.

by:

This battery disconnect is awesome. With just one push of the button it disconnects your positive post. Another push and it is reconnected. I installed this on a 2023 Trail Blaze and one other time on a 2023 Chevrolet Colorado Pickup.

by:

The battery disconnect is a game changer in towing behind our RV. No need to disconnect a battery cable every time we hook up the towed vehicle. A push of the button and the battery is disconnected. Product was shipped direct to our installer in a timely manner. Price was fair.

by:

The battery disconnect installation instructions were clear and the installation went well in my 2018 Chevrolet Colorado ... in spite of the kit missing a few pieces like a second star washer for connecting the two battery cables and the second piece of protective tubing. I covered the exposed energized solenoid terminals with electrical tape to prevent an potential inadvertent short in the future when working under the hood. Works as designed so far.

I towed the Colorado from Maine to Arizona last winter and the battery disconnect worked well for the entire trip. It made preparing the truck for towing and driving very easy!

by:

I received the Roadmaster remote battery disconnect in a timely manner and had it installed in my 2016 Chevy Colorado by a local RV dealer. I used it for the first time this week and it worked like a charm. I didn't lose any of my preset radio stations or any other data that I know of. Pushing a button on the dash is a lot easier than disconnecting and reconnecting battery cables.

Still working just fine.

by:

The RM-766 is a solid piece of hardware and comes with absolutely everything required for the install, right down to the "Tow" and "Drive" stickers for the switch. I use it to disconnect the battery in my 2016 Ford Edge 3.5L AWD, to help make it flat towable behind my RV. It works great and I do not have to open the hood and mess with battery cables while travelling. I like it.

My original switch appeared to be malfunctioning just a few weeks after installation. It would not consistently disconnect or connect the battery. This replacement switch resolved the problem.

As always, I needed a host of devices to set up our new Toad, and etrailer was the perfect choice! Lot of product, in stock, for a decent price, and shipped quickly! HIGHLY recommend

by:

A bit of work to install but we saved $2,500 on labor doing it ourselves.

by:

Works great!
E-Trailer did a great job
and very professional!

Fairly easy install. Routing the wiring is the most time consuming part. I would've liked to have had heat shrink terminals sent instead of just crimp terminals but overall its a great product so far!

(Also, I would recommend using a brown wire to link the lighting together in the rear as opposed to the white wire that is recommended in the instructional video, to keep everything clear for anyone who may work on it in the future)

by:

The disconnect was just as expect. Good quality. Instructions and all needed accessories in package. I like the definite sound it makes when switching so you know its working.

by:

I have a 2014 Silverado that I wanted to tow with my RV. In order to tow GM calls for the battery to be disconnected. This was the only product that I fond that would do what I wanted. It is slightly over priced in my opinion but it does the job. I have attached it to my aftermarket air box and ran the switch under the hood release. This way I can use the remote to unlock the doors when I am ready to unhook.

by:

Easy install and works great no problems at all

by:

Everything worked great. It was a super easy install. Thanks for all of your help.

by:

This product works great for our 2018 Ford Explorer. It works perfectly for our application and allows us to easily disconnect the vehicle battery when we are preparing to tow the Explorer.

by:

Very easy install. Just take your time and follow the instructions.

by:

Your people did and excellent job with this order.

by:

Installed at another shop as had a 2 month wait for trailer to install it

by:

Installed the disconnect switch which was exactly what I was looking for. Very clean and works just like it claimed.

by:

Quick delivery and excellent packaging. I have already watched the install video for my exact vehicle, so installation should be easy.
Thanks!

  • Recommended Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2015-2018 GMC Canyon or Chevy Colorado
The GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado are practically the same vehicle with 2 different names. When it comes to flat towing they both have the same instructions and fits. For the 2015-2018 model years you can flat tow a 4WD but you cannot flat tow a 2WD. Whichever way you decide to go, make sure it is a 4WD so you can flat tow it. A complete flat towing setup includes a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low...

  • Recommended Flat Towing Parts for a 2023 GMC Canyon
No, the tow hooks come off no matter what brand of base plate you use. This is extremely common amongst all trucks with flat towing set ups. That's a solid anchor point and attaching a base plate there hides it extremely well. You're going to want to stay away from the AT4X if you goal is to flat tow a 2023 GMC Canyon. None of the base plates work with that model. They make these trucks right next to our shop and the front ends on them look amazing but the base plates aren't compatible....

  • Why Should You Disconnect The Battery When Flat Towing
The general reason a battery needs to be disconnected for flat towing is because there are certain functions that need to be disabled to prevent your vehicle's battery from draining. You wouldn't want to get to your destination and unhook and then have a dead battery and not be able to move your vehicle. You should always follow your vehicle's manual to the letter to prevent damage to your vehicle. If you want to install a switch to make disconnecting and reconnecting the battery simple...

  • Why Does The Negative Battery Cable Need To Be Removed To Flat Tow A 2021 Chevy Spark Manual
The reasoning behind removing the negative cable from your 2021 Chevy Spark's battery isn't a charging/maintaining battery level issue. Chevy has you do this to disable certain functions of your vehicle to allow it to be safely flat towed. As time goes on cars are getting progressively more and more computerized and by not following the manufacturer's required steps, such as removing the negative battery cable, could potentially harm these components. To make disconnecting the battery as...

  • Why Do I Need To Disconnect My Battery When Flat Towing A 2024 GMC Canyon
Hello Steve, thanks for reaching out. The battery must be disconnected when flat towing a 2024 GMC Canyon behind a motorhome because GMC say so in the Canyon owners manual.
