Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Adapters - Hitch Expander - HTAD Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're taking a look at the inch and a quarter to two inch hitch adapter. This receiver allows you to convert any inch and a quarter class one and class two receiver to a two inch receiver. That way you can easily haul your two inch hitch accessories even though you have an inch and a quarter hitch on your vehicle. It is made from a durable steel construction and features a black powder coated finish to resist rust and corrosion. The inch and a quarter shank on the unit is solid steel for a very strong durable design and the receiver right here measures two inches by two inches. And this does feature a capacity of 300 pounds when it comes to the tongue weight.

A few measurements I want to mention for you real quick. I took a measurement from the center of this pin hole to the center of this pin hole and got a measurement of 7 and 1/4 inches. From very front to very back measures 11 inches. From the center of this pin hole to the back of the shank measures and inch and half. Now, in order for your accessory to work with this unit, you need to make sure that the shank of your accessory is three and 3/8 of an inch or shorter. And that's because that's the amount of clearance or that's the amount of room we have inside this receiver slot.

So, from the back of this unit to the center of that hitch pin hole internally we have three and 3/8 of an inch, so again, your hitch accessory like a bike rack or a cargo carrier, cannot be more than three and 3/8 inches long from the center of the hitch pin hole on your accessory to the end or to the back of the shank, which is the part that slides into the hitch. Now, if it's longer than three and 3/8 inches, it will not work with this adapter, so please keep that in mind. Your pins and clips or pins and locks are not included. This pin hole right here will accept a standard 5/8 inch diameter pin. If you're in need of one, you can find it at Etrailer.com with part number PC3 that part includes a 5/8 inch diameter pin and a clip. This one back here will accept a 1/2 diameter pin and you can find that on our website with part number PC2 and that part number includes a 1/2 inch diameter pin and it also comes with a clip.

Again, durable, steel construction. Black powder coated finishing. Product is made in the USA. Now, please note, this is not designed for towing, so it's designed for use with bike racks and cargo carriers. That information is printed right here on the sticker on top of the product and the tongue weight capacity of your hitch will be reduced by 50% when using an adapter. That's gonna do it for today's look at the inch and a quarter to two inch hitch adapter..

Seems like a decent extender/adapter for my 1 1/4" to 2" hitch needs. 93416

After one year this product continues to work and function as advertised. I use it for lite duty. It provides a platform to which I mount my bike rack via a lite weight trailer hitch. The fit and finish has held up well. Good product, does whats expected.

I needed this product to adapt a standard Honda 1 1/4 inch hitch to a bike rack with a two inch mounting bar. Ordinarily, the hitch bar might have fit the standard Honda mount, but there was a blocking reinforcement bar under the Honda mount. This mount enables me to conform both the existing and bike rack mounts. Note: I carefully measured hole distances from ends of each mount to be sure it fit, which it does. I have no time to test the mount with the full rack load right now, but it seems to be within specified tolerances. 84470

Product was extremely well put together. Welds were all neat and uniform. Nothing was out of line. Finish was great. Heavy gauge steel: nothing cheap about the product. Excellent product. 185985

Doing great. Used it again this week to pull a fertilizer spreader. No problem at all. Paint even still looks brand new.

This hitch adapter is just what the doctor ordered!! It met my needs in making it possible to "adapt" a rear cargo carrier to our 2007 Ford Explorer. This gives us extra capacity to transport wedding-related items from our home in Columbus, OH to Battle Creek, MI without having to rent a trailer or use two vehicles. Not only that, etrailer.com "performed a miracle" in getting this delivered in 2 days at no extra cost!! GREAT JOB in supplying what we needed, when we needed it, at a price we could afford. 119859

Great, strong quality, but I wish it wasn't so long. My deer hauling hitch tray now hangs a foot off/away from the back of my little 2 door hatchback and with only 4"-6" of ground clearance. Really looks like an odd set-up. I should have measured better before ordering; now will have to only shoot small deer to haul.:-) 8104

I purchased this along with a 1.25" hitch for my Prius so that I could use my hitched mount bike rack. Bridget at etrailer.com was very helpful by making sure that I got that right adapter and getting it to me quickly. I ordered this on a Thursday and got it on the next Monday, free shipping! We just traveled from Ohio to St Augustine Florida with our 2 bikes trouble free. 122094

This product is very well built. It's also very heavy. However I bought it thinking I would use this so I could continue to use my 2" bike rack that I would routinely use behind my SUV. It will work but in the end the rack sticks out way too far and I did not get a comfortable feeling about the stress I would place on a class 2 hitch (1.25"). The product itself is great but if your intent is to use it on a bike rack my suggestion is to think it through. If your carrying a good deal of weight centered too far off the back of the car then you might loose stability. 176468

This is a perfect fit. I thought I had wasted money on my class 1 hitch since none of the 2 inch adapters would fit. But this adapter saved me it works with class 1 and 2 hitches. From my research it is the only one available. Many thanks to etrailer. 567238

I want to adapt my 11/4 hitch to 2 for a Hollywood platform bike rack. However, the hitch adapter I got locally had some play in it. Do you have any movement with your platform bike rack with your adapter? The movement I had was where the adapter slid into the hitch, not with the bike rack.

Overall fit well into existing hitch. However, with the added rack on the car and the extended distance from the rear, the rack sometimes scrapes going out steep driveways. Would not be a problem with a higher ground clearance car. 619667

Fit my new Prius hitch perfectly. Only concern in using one of these adapters is to not overload. I'm pretty confident the whole setup will work fine for the hitch mounted bike rack we already have. No worries. 559136

Comments

Just be aware that using this adapter will lower the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by half. The tongue weight on a Class I hitch used on your Prius is 200 lbs, so using the adapter will lower that to 100 lbs. This will mean that the weight of the bike rack and the bikes carried upon it cannot exceed 100 lbs.

Excellent quality. Use the the product with limitations is clearly spelled out. Order was processed promptly and delivered without delay. Great product at a great price. Installation was easy and took less than an hour even including the time to jack up the car and set jack stands to get room to work. Note that you do not HAVE to remove and cut the heat shield if you don't want to; however, the hitch can rub against the shield when it is loaded (with a bike rack in my case) and make a minor squeaking noise. Don't forget to get a stabilizer/anti-wobble/tightener if you're using a bike rack or similar carrier. Depending on your hitch, rack, or adapter there can be a lot of play in it when hitting bumps in the road causing the bike and rack to move around a lot. 499856

The HTAD Hitch Adapter was purchased to accommodate my 2" bike rack in the 1 1/4" hitch receiver on my new car, dissolving my initial dismay at the size of the freshly-installed hitch. The car salesman knew exactly how to solve the problem and texted your website with this product to me right away. It is well-made and beefy enough for the job. Need met. Happy me. 494853

Product looks good quality. Took an hour to put in. Recommend two man job but jack stands work great. Before removing old bolts used WD 40 to soak them. Tap set would have worked great but muscle works as well on corroded holes. Did not have to jack vehicle. Did in car port. Liked they gave torque specs. Am firm believer in torquing bolts to spec. Received product a day earlier than promised. Liked box was the size of small bike box. Using it initially for 4 bike carrier and can not wait to try it out. Must purchase hitch lock for this vehicle since carrier was used on Jeep. all in all I found everything clear and seller caring of service. Very happy. 405871

I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla. Shipment was fast even with the holiday. Parts and bolts all securely packed. I also ordered the 1.25 to 2" adapter. Installing: I couldn't get the bolts to catch to screw in so I tapped the weld nuts and that did the trick. Local stores have the single 12-1.25 so I didn't have to buy an entire tap and die set. After that the installation was pretty straight forward. I wish I would have thought to investigate a hitch years ago versus carrying the bikes on a trunk carrier. 403916

Just fine. There have been no issues. I might suggest one product design modification. It has not been an issue, but I think that changing to a pin that actually has a hole in it to place the cotter key to lock the pin in place would be better and less likely to fall out.

Ask the Experts about this Brophy Hitch Adapters
Do you have a question about this Hitch Adapter?

  • Can Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack be Used on a 2017 Subaru Impreza with a Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver
  • I'm afraid your husband is correct to be concerned. The trailer hitch receivers we carry for your Impreza, like the Draw-Tite # DT24959, are all Class I hitches and will need an expander to fit the Yakima HoldUp for 2 Inch Hitch Receivers # Y02443. Using an expander, like the Brophy # HTAD, will give you a 2 inch receiver opening but it will also reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50 percent. That puts your maximum tongue weight at no more than 100 pounds using the Draw-Tite...

You would either want the 2 inch shank # 8880580 or the 1-1/4 inch shank # 8880581. An adapter sleeve just won't hold that particular rack well. The expander you referenced using like # HTAD is an option, but it will allow more sway as you mentioned and it will reduce the tongue weight capacity...

They're both 1-1/4 inches but the Draw-Tite has a stopper inside of it to prevent you from overloading the Class I hitch with Class II accessories. Instead you can use the Brophy # HTAD. This loss comes from the actual load being moved further away from the hitch tube, which increase leverage on the hitch. If you have a bike rack or cargo carrier with a 2 inch shank it is possible to use a 1- 1/4 inch to 2 inch hitch adapter. A hitch adapter we carry...

  • Availability of 2 Inch Trailer Hitch for 2006 Pontiac Vibe
  • The available trailer hitches that are confirmed to fit your 2006 Pontiac Vibe all have 1-1/4 inch receivers. This is likely because the vehicle itself does not have the type of weight capacity that a higher class (and larger receiver opening) trailer hitch will provide. Manufacturers do this to prevent smaller vehicles from being overloaded with higher class hitches and accessories. I recommend the Curt Class II Round Tube Receiver Hitch # C12234. This Class II hitch is confirmed to...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Ford Focus
  • All of the available trailer hitches for your 2017 Ford Focus Hatchback SE are Class I hitches with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. This is most likely because the vehicle itself simply does not have the capacity that a higher class trailer hitch (and larger receiver opening) will provide. For your vehicle, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11158. This is custom fit for your Ford Focus and I have attached the installation details for you to check out. I recommend the Curt...

  • Things to Consider When Using a Hitch Extender with a Hitch Bike Rack
  • 22-25 inches from the pin hole to the start of the upright portion of the bike rack is a good amount of distance, you might run into ground clearance issues with a bike rack sticking out that far when driving up drive ways or on dips in the road. When you use an adapter like this you cut the tongue weight capacity of the hitch in half as well. You will need to consider those two things before you use the # HTAD adapter on your 2015 Subaru Forester. Is there a reason you need to use an...

  • How to Carry a Mobility Scooter with a 1999 Toyota Camry
  • I do have an option for you but the highest rated trailer hitch receiver they make for a 1999 Toyota Camry is a Class II, to my knowledge. I would be very skeptical that a Class III or IV exists due to the size of the vehicle. For a Class II trailer hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36336. This trailer hitch has a 300 lb tongue weight (TW) rating however, the vehicle is likely lower and if that is the case then this will need...

  • Compatibility of 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver with 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 4 Door Sedan
  • At this time there is not a 2 inch hitch option available for your 2008 Subaru Impreza sedan from any of our manufacturers. The EcoHitch # 306-X7261 is a fit for the WRX models, but is not compatible with your Sedan. I reached out to the manufacturer and although they haven't tested it for a fit, they think the frame would line up but the trim would be an issue. There is not a 2 inch option available for your vehicle as it has a very limited capacity, so only Class I hitches like...

  • Can a 1-1/4 - 2 Adapter be Used to Safely Haul a Cargo Carrier with a 2015 Toyota Corolla
  • The concept of a hitch adapter like the Brophy # HTAD is a good idea in theory but the problem with using one of those with a 1-1/4" hitch, like part # C11265 or # 24913 for your 2015 Toyota Corolla, is that it will reduce the weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50%. Since those trailer hitches have a tongue weight rating of 200 lbs this means that the tongue weight will be reduced to 100 lbs. If you were to use all of this for the 24x60 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18153 you would only...

  • Trailer Hitch Needed to Carry 2 Bikes with a 2006 Scion xB
  • You are correct that the Invisi-Hitch Accessory Adapter Kit # 28351 will need to be used to carry an accessory when the Draw-Tite Invisi-Hitch # 28501 is installed on your 2006 Scion xB . This is due to the vertical configuration of the hitch receiver. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11487 will have less clearance from where the hitch receiver is located, but since your bike rack will install directly into the hitch receiver you will not see as much play. Since the Curt warranty...

  • How to Determine Clearance Needed for Swagman Hitch Bike Rack S64152-2
  • It sounds like you have been using the 2-inch Swagman Original bike rack # S64152-2 with a 1-1/4-inch to 2-inch hitch extender/adapter like # HTAD or # HT5R. Both of these adapters allow 2-inch accessories to be used in a 1-1/4-inch hitch. While these items do both adapt size and provide extension (and the # HT5R also adds rise for more ground clearance) all such adapters will add potential for more motion of the loaded accessory, just as you noted. The other downside to adapters like...

  • Trailer Hitch to Carry a Saris Hitch Mount Bike Rack with 2" Shank with a 2017 Subaru Legacy
  • We actually have a solution for your 2017 Subaru Legacy to carry your Saris bike rack without the use of an adapter! The Curt Trailer Hitch # C12298 that you referenced fits a 2010 - 2014 Subaru Legacy so it won't be compatible with your 2017 model. If you like the Curt look then you would want to go with the Curt # 13390 instead which is a fit for your newer model year and has a 2" receiver. Curt does require that the stabilizer strap # 18050 be used per their warranty so if you'd...

  • Using a Kuat NV1 With a 2 Inch Shank on a 2009 Mini Clubman
  • I have a solution for you, but for the 2009 Mini Clubman, there is only a single Curt Class I hitch, part # C11387 available for your vehicle. I've included a link to our installation tips to help your install go as smoothly as possible. You'll need to trim the fascia with tin snips like part # ALL836149 To use your existing Kuat NV1, you'll need to use a hitch adapter like part # HTAD, but this will reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50% to only 100 pounds, rendering it...

  • Compatible Trailer Hitch for Bike Rack on 2006 Subaru Baja
  • Your 2006 Subaru Baja is only compatible with a Class I hitch, like the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch # 24735, which has a 1-1/4 inch receiver so it will not be able to carry the Thule rack you already have without the use of a 1/4 to 2 inch hitch adapter like part # HTAD. Using the hitch adapter will allow you to use your Thule rack that you have that fits a 2 inch receiver. However, using a hitch adapter will reduce the maximum tongue weight of your hitch by 50 percent. The...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier for 2015 Lincoln MKZ
  • For your 2015 Lincoln MKZ, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24897. Unlike the Curt model that is also confirmed to fit your vehicle, the installation of this hitch will allow you to trim and reinstall the underbody panel/fascia for accommodation with the hitch receiver and crosstube. On the Curt model, this panel is completely removed and cannot be reinstalled. This Class I hitch will use existing holes in your Lincoln's frame for a no-drill installation....

  • Recommended Hitch for 2007 Subaru Impreza Wagon with 2 Inch Bike Rack
  • Depending on the weight of your current bike rack and your bike will determine if using a 2 inch adapter will work or not. The hitch adapter will reduce the capacity of the hitch by 50 percent causing the tongue weight of the hitch to now be 100lbs. If the combination of weight for your bike and 2 inch rack is below this then a 2 inch adapter will work for you. I recommend the Draw-Tite hitch # 24710 over the others because of the price and you will not have to use a stabilization...

  • The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24808 is a confirmed fit for 2004 through 2009 Toyota Prius models. There is not a 2 inch option for any of these vehicles because they aren't rated for towing or carrying the capacity of a 2 inch receiver. The manufacturers are attempting to protect users from harming their vehicle by only offering the capacities that are appropriate in the smaller size hitch receiver opening. You can use a hitch adapter...
