Solution for 1-1/4 inch Hitch that Needs to Carry Bike Rack for 2 inch Hitch

Updated 12/03/2024 | Published 12/04/2024

Question:

So if my Rocky Mount bike rack has a 2 inch hitch, do I use ann OK adapter to convert the one and a quarter inch receiver for the 2 inch bike rack? Thanks

Hey Barb, one solution is to go with a 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch hitch adapter like the # HTAD but the downside is that these adapters cut the hitch capacity by 50 percent and they do add movement and length to the setup. This is most ideal if the rack isn't used all that much.

Ideally you go with a bike rack that fits both hitch sizes like the Hollywood Racks Trail Rider # HR200Z which is a really solid and easy to use option that would work well for you. If you will be using the bike rack a lot this would be long term a solution you'd be a lot happier with.

So with the adaptor you describe I'd only be able to carry one bike? I use my bike rack a up to several times a month in season, mostly with one bike.....I'd prefer it if I didn't have to buy another rack. Though I guess I could continue to use my very old but still functional Thule which has a 1 1/2" hitch. And it is ok to put a receiver hitch and bike rack on a 2025 Toyota Camry? thanks very much Barb F.

@Barb Sorry I didn't word that properly. The 50 percent reduction is the tongue weight capacity of the hitch it's installed in. Typically for 1-1/4 inch hitches it's 200 lbs and then reduced down to 100 lbs. Yes you can install a hitch on a 2025 Toyota Camry with the Curt # C94RV which can carry a bike rack.
