Manual-Adjust Brake

With repeated use of this brake assembly, the brake shoes may move out of alignment, causing less efficient braking performance. To keep the brake shoes aligned and the brake assembly performing correctly, you should perform routine maintenance.

This brake assembly should be adjusted after installation and then as needed for the life of the brake. To adjust the brake, use a brake adjustment screw tool (sold separately) to turn the adjustment gear on the inside of the assembly. Continue to turn the gear until the drum surrounding the brake catches on the brake pads enough so that the hub can no longer be turned easily by hand. Then reverse the gear by about 10 clicks. A properly adjusted brake should drag slightly on the brake drum.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Brakes AKEBRK-35L Review

Today we're going to take a look at the 10" left hand electric brake assembly for a 3500 pound axle. This electric brake assembly is easier to install and offers more user control than hydraulic brakes. The electric brake assembly requires only an electric brake controller, no actuator or hydraulic lines are necessary. The brake shoes on this assembly, they are lines with an automotive grade friction material. This friction material is fully bonded. It's not riveted to the shoes, gives you a longer life, more braking torque. The lining itself has tapered edges on it and then they do a circular grinding on it and this is done to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lock up. On this assembly it is a manual adjustment, so there is a periodic manual adjustment required.

They do have an adjustment gear down here that's a fine tooth brake adjustment gear. It allows for a more precise setting and there is no break in period needed. The backing plate that this assembly has is a e-coated finish to it. It resists wear and corrosion and if you'll notice at the very bottom, there's usually the adjuster hole right here. Now, this does come with the adjuster plug already in it. That hole is where you can get your tool in to adjust your brakes.

Lots of times it will come without this plug and you really do need that plug to keep any dirt from getting into your brake assembly and causing any problems. Once you put your drum on here, if that's open dirt can get in there and cause problems. This does come with the adjuster plug. If you'll also notice, it comes with the mounting bolts right here that are included. The nuts and the lock washers they use to install that, they are sold separately. This assembly is certified for QAI, which is Quality Assurance International and CSA which is Canadian Standards Association. The size on this is a 10" by 2 1/4".

This is a driver's side electric trailer brake assembly and the size 10 by 2 1/4 comes from the diameter, which is 10" and then 2 1/4 which is the width of the pad. If we put a ruler on that we can show you it's 10" and then the width on that lining is 2 1/4". This is the left hand side or the driver's side. The way you can tell that .. They do, when you get it, you'll have a sticker on here, but if that sticker ever comes off the easiest way to tell is to look at the linings on the pad.

If you look at this one, this lining is shorter than this one. The shorter shoe or pad will face the front of your trailer. That means the shorter pad will be this way. That will mean that this is a left hand or driver's side assembly. This is for axles that are rated 3500 pounds and again it does fit the four bolt brake mounting flange. To install this, you want to make sure the mounting flange on your axle is a four bolt pattern. This does use 10" drums and again these are electric brakes, so you do need power to operate the magnet here. You'll notice the two green wire coming out the back. This is one will go to a nice clean ground. The other goes to the brake feed to supply power to that magnet. They're both green and it doesn't matter. Either wire can be used for either function. That should do it for the review on the the 10" left hand electric brake assembly for a 3500 pound axle.

thank u etrailer for sending me 2 extra nuts & 2 extra mounting studs. the best way to remove a bad stud is to drill it out. As u know im the one who had a mounting nut go on & turn both directions after it was put on. i could not back the nut off to replace the stud. i took a drill bit a little smaller than the stud & drilled the head of the mounting stud off. i drilled pased the 4 hole plate, knocked the nut off the back side, & taped the remainder of the stud out of the hole. No damage was done to the plate. Taking a grinder to it would have been a bad deal. The only thing i wished was in my hardware would have been a simple drawing of which the right & left sides of the trailer were. i had to go back & spend most of the day & swap both sides of the trailer after i done a complete job of putting on the brake assemblies. I did averything i thought to do to get it right the first time. I got it wrong! A simple way would be just to remind everyone that the longer brake pad goes to the rear of the trailer. I now have everything back together & everything works fine. What a nightmare, but now im in good shape. I would like to have better tires thou. Stronger & taller tires. I have looked at the contender st225/75r15 with the white rims. Soon i hope to chat with you on these tires. Again thanks for sending me the extra hardware. I will most diffinitly pass your website out to ones that i know. randy , fully custom built rv out of a v noise 16 foot cargo trailer, spent one year to build.... 305717

I ordered 4 sets of brake assemblies late Wednesday night (10:30 pm). I had the brakes by Friday at noon. I didn't pay a lot for shipping either. Total bill was under $125 with shipping included The brake assembly was a perfect fit and my RV actually doesn't push my truck through intersections anymore. My only complaint is that the product din't come with an install elf, so my hands wouldn't have to get dirty.....but what would I do with the elf after it installed my brake assemblies. Trailer needs install elves and return shipping boxes for the elves after they do the work. Otherwise it was awesome! 269858

Replaced drums and brakes on both axles--3.5 K Dexter EZ lubes. These are on a travel trailer, so the EZ lube axle feature is not as relevant as it would be for axles subject to submersion. When the originals were pulled, I discovered that grease had by-passed one of the seals. The escaping grease did not get to the shoes and drum friction surfaces; but there was plenty of stray grease in the brake mechanism. I hand pack the bearings every couple of years and only put one pump of grease in at the zerks before the alternate pulling season. 367041

I needed to retrofit my two axle trailer to get it state inspected. I bought everything I needed from etrailer. I love one stop shopping! I was very pleased with the delivery time and the high quality of parts I bought. The brakes work like a charm. The only thing that I would suggest for the company is to recommend break away automatic braking device when selling these brakes. It was required by law in Pa and I had to buy an automatic brake locally. I would do business with these folks any day. I highly recommend. 361740

I was in need of replacement parts for my car trailer. I went on line and found e-trailer and reviewed their site, found everything I needed and ordered. The parts arrived in a very timely fashion and everything appears to be of high quality. The cost was also very competitive with other sellers on line. I will definitely be using e-trailer.com in the future should I require more trailer supplies. Thanks for the wonderful experience. Darrel from LaCrosse, Wi 350440

Used these to replace my surge brake system. Way more work to remove the surge system than to install these. I live in the mountains and surge brakes are a real challenge when long grades are encountered. Burned them up several times! So far, these worked so well on one axle that I decided to add them to the other axle. Have more than enough braking now and can adjust the braking performance with the controller. Way better system for mountain driving. 281903

Fast shipping and the products were exactly what we ordered. Love the website and the instructional videos! Would not have been able to do the job without them. Did find out that there should be more info regarding electric brakes. Particularly that some model vehicles will not operate them. Also some vehicles have had the 12 volt connection disconnected when off the line. You have to track that down and plug it back in. 246229

I have never had trouble with any of the products I've ordered. If you have a problem there are videos that you provide to help. I've ordered trailer hitches, lifters, brake controllers, and of course brakes. Yes, I've had to review the videos on some products, such as the brake controller, but it came together and they worked the first time. Thanks for your help. Jeff D. 257056

Just installed them the other day. They were half the price of local shops so it was a no brainer for me. The quality seems fine for the dual axel landscape trailer they were put on. Bolted on with no problems, just need to finish the new wiring to see how they perform. 335206

Haven't installed yet, but they look like good quality; looking forward to new brakes! Make sure to properly adjust after installation (I've had "professionals" put them on and not tighten them adequately with the star adjuster and thus they didn't engage properly) 399536

I converted from hydraulic surge to electric. Brakes are great. I have drop axles. I had a To grind a little away from the axle flange so they sit back correctly. It was easy enough to to once I realized why they were not seating correctly 406772

Product arrived in a speedy manner. Only problem with the order was the brake shoes were out of alignment and I had to reposition them (most likely due to shipping). Have use eTrailer before and will use them again and I do recommend them. 244207

Ask the Experts about this etrailer Trailer Brakes
Do you have a question about this Trailer Brake?

  • Can Electric Brakes be Used on a Boat Trailer
  • Traditionally, trailer manufacturers did not use electric brakes on boat trailers because the brake magnet wiring and trailer wiring did not always have the best insulation or water protection. These days, more and more manufacturers are using electric brakes on boat trailers due to improvements in wiring insulation and heat shrink connectors. If you are going to use electric brakes, I strongly recommend using heat shrink butt connectors, like part # DW05745-10, when splicing the wires...

  • How To Tell The Difference From Right and Left Electric Brake Assemblies
  • The right and left orientation is determined if you are standing behind the trailer looking towards the tow vehicle. The left side is the drivers side and the right side is the passengers side. Tthe shorter brake pad will always be in the front of the assembly and the longer brake pad on the rear of the assembly, the reason is that the shorter pad will contact the drum first to slow the trailer down and the larger pad will then contact the drum to finish stopping the trailer, so both...

  • Replacement Dexter Brake Assemblies for 023-027-00 and 023-026-00
  • We have direct replacements for the two brake assembly part numbers you listed. You would want part # AKEBRK-35R and # AKEBRK-35L. Or, for never adjust assemblies the part # AKEBRK-35L-SA and # AKEBRK-35R-SA would work as well. Most likely you have a Dexter 3,500 lb axle and the correct bearings would be the # BK2-100. However, since I do not know for sure what axle you have you would need to pull the hubs of your trailer to get the numbers stamped on the bearings so that we can pick...

  • How to Choose the Correct Brake Assembly for Trailer Axles
  • You will need to do some measuring to determine if the 10 Inch Electric Brake Assembly LH, item # AKEBRK-35L, is the correct assembly for your trailer. Measure the diameter of the mounted brake shoe, the width of the lining and the distance between the mounting holes on center. It may also help if you can determine the manufacturer of your brake. Once you have these measurements you can choose the correct assembly for your axles. It is recommended to change both of the brake assemblies...

  • Which Grease to Use for RV Trailer Hubs and How Many Amps Should Be at Trailer Brake Magnets
  • Since the brake shoes and drums are wearing evenly, the angled magnet wear is not a problem. They do not have to wear even. As the magnet is charged it swings the arm out and may put an angle in the wear. Even with all brand new parts this can happen. If the surface inside the drum that the magnet attaches to is worn unevenly, the magnet will too. The grease is degrading for probably one or both of a couple reasons. Certain base compounds for grease are incompatible. Mixing these greases...

  • Amperage of Brake Magnets and Size of Wire Used To Connect 7-Way Trailer Plug To Electric Brakes
  • On each individual electric brake magnet the amperage draw would be 3.0 to 3.2 max amps at 12 to 13 volts on 7-inch brake magnets and 3.2 to 4.0 max amps at 12 to 13 volts on 10 and 12-inch brake magnets. The max amperage draw for the brake magnets on a single axle trailer (2 brakes) would be 6.3 to 6.8 max amps on a 7-inch brake system and 7.5 to 8.2 max amps on 10 and 12-inch brake system. The amps will be higher if using a tandem axle or triple axle trailer. I am including a link...

  • Replacement Hubs, Drums, and Brakes for 3,500 LB AL-KO Axle

For brakes you can use etrailer.com Trailer Brake Assemblies, # AKEBRK-35L for left hand side and # AKEBRK-35R for right hand side or the self adjusting versions, # AKEBRK-35L-SA for left hand side and # 2AKEBRK-35R-SA for right hand side. • Electric Trailer Brakes Not Working After Replacing Magnets and Confirming Power to Magnets
  • I suggest you first verify that one of the two wires from the brake assembly is solidly grounded to the trailer frame. (It does not matter which one of the two wires from the magnet connects to the brake controller output wire and which one connects to chassis ground). The ground wire should have a ring terminal and be tightly screwed to a clean, rust- and paint-free surface on the trailer frame. You might try roughing-up the frame surface before attaching the ring terminal. You indicate...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes Locking Up
  • The first thing I would check would be the voltage coming out of the brake output circuit on the 7-way of your tow vehicle. I would use a multimeter like our # BTMT15 to test for voltage on this circuit when you have the brakes applied on a low setting. You should see a number that is much less than 12 volts as 12 volts that should be the max output of the brake controller. If you see 12 volts there then you know something is not wired up right on the vehicle side of the equation. You...

  • Recommendation for Trailer Brakes On a 16 Foot Enclosed Trailer with 2 Axles And 5,000 LB GVW
  • If your trailer does not have brakes on the axles at this time then I would recommend putting brakes on at least one axle. Many car haulers and utility style trailers with 7,000 pound gross trailer and load weight ratings have brakes on only one axle. If you plan on using your trailer often and loading it near or to capacity, then brakes on both axles would make stopping with the trailer much easier and safer, and would save wear and tear on your vehicle braking system. If the trailer...

  • What Does an Intermittent Flashing OL Code Mean for a Brake Controller
  • Without knowing what brake controller you have I will venture to guess that the OL code you are seeing is an over load code. The OL or overload error code indicates a short in the brake output circuit. Start by examining the trailer connector. Make sure that the pins on the vehicle side of the connection and the sockets on the trailer side are not damaged or corroded. If you can see green corrosion on the pins or the sockets, there is a possibility that the corrosion may have spread...

First you need to make sure the new axle has a weight capacity equal to or greater than the stock axle. To determine if the hub/drum assemblies we offer are compatible with your trailer spindles, you will need to pull one of your idler hubs off, and look at the inner and outer bearing numbers. • Brake Magnet Recommendation for a 12x2 Brake Assembly

Going with a higher rated brake magnet won't give you any additional braking power. It will only make the brakes seem more sensitive and hard to setup with a brake controller. You can go with standard brake assemblies, like # AKEBRK-35L for the left side and # AKEBRK-35R for the right.
