Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Ford E-Series Cutaway

Speaker 1: Today on this 2017 Ford E450 Cutaway Chassis, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 65053.This front mount hitch is a great way to add a spare tire carrier to the front of your motor home, or if you wanna use a bike rack on the front of it as you're towing a car behind your motor home, this is a great solution for you. Many of our customers have expressed issues when installing this hitch as far as difficulty with dealing with the hardware, getting the bumper in position, and trimming around the bumper, as well as relocating the license plate if they have one. We'll get to that later, and show you how simple that really is.On the end of our receiver you'll find this nice, welded-on collar which helps improve the strength of the receiver opening, and also gives us a nice finished look. This hitch features a 500-pound max cargo carrying capacity, so if we're using a motorcycle carrier or a cargo carrier or bike rack that's how much weight will be forcing down on it. It also features a 9,000-pound max line pull capacity, so if you're using it for a winch-plate carrier it can withstand a winch that can pull 9,000 pounds. So just keep that in mind for whatever you plan on using with your front-mounted hitch. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need. You're looking at about 16 inches from the ground to the top of the two-inch receiver opening, and about two inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the forward-most part of the front bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install we'll be at the front of our motor home, and we need to remove one panel.

We'll have four 8-millimeter fasteners just like this one to remove. With those fasteners removed, we'll grab the panel, pull it down and back away from the front bumper, and we can set it aside. In each one of our frame rails we'll have this forward hole right next to where our bumper beam bolts to. We need to enlarge this to a half-inch. You can either use a drill bit or you can use a step bit, which is what I'm going to use. Now, on each side of our frame rail we'll have a 21-millimeter nut just like this. It's the same on both sides of the vehicle, so keep in mind everything we do on one side we'll repeat on the other. We need to loosen these nuts.

We don't need to remove them, we just need to loosen them far enough that we can slip our hardware in between the bumper and the frame and yet still keep the bumper in place. So just keep it on a few turns. Now we'll take our pull wire and go through this large, oval hole here, this is our rear attachment point for our hitch, and work the pull wire out the front of the frame, and it'll come down behind our bumper. Now we'll take one of our square spacers, stick it over the pull wire, and we'll thread a carriage bolt onto the pull wire. And we'll feed this into the frame, and then pull the bolt through the hole if we remove our pull wire. We'll now take our pull wire, go through the small hole in the front that we enlarged earlier, and repeat the same process of attaching our hardware. And with our hardware now in place in the frame rails on both sides of the vehicle, we can refasten the nuts that hold our bumper beam in place. Now, because our bumper beam can be moved up and down, we'll line up the nuts with the marks where they originally we're on the frame, so our bumper's at the correct height. In our particular case this motor home is equipped with a front license plate, so we need to remove the factory bracket for the time being.

We'll push up on these tabs on the bottom, and use a flathead screwdriver to release the tabs on the top. It'll pull off the vehicle and we can set it aside. We went ahead and marked out on our fascia here an area right in the center where we need to trim out, right until this line right here where the two sections meet. This is all according to the instructions. I'm gonna use a rotary tool to do this, you can also use a sharp utility knife or a pair of ten-steps, but a rotary tool I've found works the best.We found that we actually need to trim out this entire section right here, so we'll just go ahead and do that. Now, with an extra set of hands, we'll take our hitch and we'll raise it into position. With our hitch in position, we'll now take a conical tooth washer, the teeth will face out towards the hitch, and we'll thread on a nut.

Now we'll tighten down our hardware. Now we'll torque all of the hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. On our underbody splash shield we've marked out on each side areas that we need to cut out, according to the instructions. I'll use a rotary tool again. And here's what it looks like once we have it trimmed. Now we can take our trimmed underbody panel and reinstall it.When it comes to our front license plate, we won't be able to reinstall the bracket in the original location because that's where the hitch is. If we cut off one of these tabs on the top, we'll be able to reinstall it. If we cut off this one right here, closer to the driver side of the vehicle, we'll be mounting it on the driver side. If we cut off this one we can mount it on the passenger side.I'm gonna cut off this tab here flush right there, and we should be able to mount it okay on the driver side. This tab here that we left will go onto the driver side location into its original hole, and the bottom will just clip onto the bumper. And that completes our look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 65053, on this 2017 Ford E450 Cutaway Chassis.

Hitch was delivered in three days. Installation was easy but took me a lot longer then the estimated install time. I had to remove the fascia under the bumper in order to move the license plate holder. I will be using the hitch to carry my wife's mobility scooter on the fron of the motorhome, also adds a little weight to the underloaded front axle on the motorhome. 55912

The hitch was delivered in a strong cardboard box with handy holes for carrying. Easy install. Works great for my scooter rack. The hardest part of the was trimming the plastic shield. Bumper was easy to remove which gives you more room for the install. 498046

Easy to install on my 2012 Sunseeker 3010 RV with the E-450 Super Duty chassis. Now my wife can launch the boat without backing down the boat ramp and not to mention keeping the rear end out of the water. BTW-delivery has always been outstanding from eTrailer. 482105

I love the hitch...It arrived 1 day early. I am very pleased with the people at etrailer. Robert is helping me with a small problem with the hitch-pin being missing in the parts bag, but I'm sure etrailer will take good care of me. I'm not very good at backing my tow behind trailer in tight spots, so this will help me sooooo much. :) We are in the middle of a Nor Easter so I have to wait to install it, but it looks pretty simple, and Robert told me to call if I had any problems... 482198

This front tow hitch is the best for backing in tight places. I just drive forward and put the trailer where I want. It’s hard to back a small trailer behind my RV, as I can’t see it behind the RV. This hitch and help for choosing the right one for my RV, from etrailer has been the best experience. Thank you etrailer. I would send a picture of how it looks but I don’t know how to upload one here.

Great product, easy installation, great price and customer service from etrailer. A couple of installation notes: rather than totally removing the front bumper like many have mentioned in their comments I followed the mfg’s instructions and used the included “fishing” wire springs to get the bolts and spacers into the frame rails. They worked very well in my opinion. Also, I sprayed the washers, nuts, and bumper mounting flange with white paint before I loosenef the 4 nuts. This was to give me witness marks so I could get the bumper alignment back to its original position. Don’t be surprised if your bumper is not centered perfectly, check before you start. Mine was off by about 1/4”. It’s not a big deal, but it can make the 3”x3” hole you cut in the plastic facia not match perfectly. You may have to trim a bit bigger to get the front of the receiver to pass thru. Like others. I couldn’t get the small screws back into the rear of the trimmed plastic air deflector, so I used zip ties for the 2 rear screws. Lastly, I was able to reuse the plastic front license plate mounting frame by cutting off the drivers side top tab. I then installed it back on the plastic facia by snapping the passenger side plastic tab into the original drivers side small facia slot. This offsets the front plate to the right side by enough to clear the new front receiver, and yet leaves the plate visible. Total install time was about 2.5 hrs. 467173

This went on nicely. It was about a 2.5 hour job following the 5 or so easy instructions that came with it to mount it on the front of my 2015 Jayco Melbourne 4x4 RV which has an Econoline E-450 van front. The nice tip I picked up on this forum was to take the bumper completely off, which made things a lot easier. It was simple to do and the bumper is pretty light. I cut the fairing underneath as shown, although this was kind of tight getting back in. The other cutout on the bumper was pretty minor and I followed instructions on the measurements and used a sharp utility knife. You should see that on the final closeup of the bumper. Overall really happy with this design and the quick service from etrailer. 212070

Arrived very quickly and was extremely well packaged. Did not move at all in the carton. I used it to support a large fishing rod rack to the front of my truck. The guys were very helpful in providing information about weight, spacing between the horizontal supports, etc. Definitely a great company to do business with. The photo shows my rod rack upside down with the hitch bolted to the bottom. 516477

2018 Ford e450 Super Duty, Forest River Forester Class C - Read all the reviews for Hints to install 1) TOP HINT TAKEN FROM OTHER REVIEWS: I spray painted the back side of the bumper bracket to show me exactly where it was supposed to go once I reinstalled it. Spray painted around Nuts and extra holes on backside of bracket, made locating the reinstallation of bumper much easier. 2) Like most folks, determined that the fairing was not going to be able to be put in the exact same position and ended up using tie straps on the back end to hold in place. 3) Took less than an hour to remove bumper & fairing , install receiver, and reinstall bumper; took another hour to reinstall fairing. 4) The measurements on cutting out hole in plastic bumper were spot on. 5) Had to take out some plastic rivets and small bolts around license plate to take it off, as it was right where I needed to cut out for receiver to pass through. Once I took it off, slid it to the right and reintalled, so I can put on the front license plate. 523827

Fitted to a 2014 Ford E250. I fitted it in 1hr 45mins, because the hardest thing to refit was the front bumper. I removed the front bumper completely, (4 nuts)and the splash guard from underneath, drilled the forward hole in the chassis with 1/2" drill bit, fitted your hitch, torqued the nuts to 75lbs. the splash guard wouldn’t go back on even with the notches cut out, so I left that off, had to cut a bit out the under bumper plastic trim to refit the front bumper. Was very easy to fit and I've already used it :) 260801

I installed this trailer hitch receiver on the front of my Ford E-450 motorhome, so I could carry a spare tire. I followed the video installation instructions, and found the installation quite simple. Since I did the installation by myself, I did not remove the bumper as others have done, and used the method shown in the installation video. To hold the receiver up into position, I propped it up on plastic milk crates and 2x4's. I quite easily cut the plastic trim with a sharp utility knife. Do not be intimidated, you CAN install this yourself! 642837

2016 E450 Minnie Winnie - Perfect fit!! I was disappointed to not find any bolt up front receivers for my 2016 E450. Seems like they only "officially" support E450 up to 2014. But then a Google search led me to this site where customers reported that this fit their newer model E450 cutaways. For a $100 I thought it worth a shot since my local trailer/hitch shop wanted to charge me $650 minimum for a custom front receiver. I read other customers posts which gave me the confidence to go ahead with this purchase and I was very pleased I did. The receiver bolted up perfectly per the instructions. Like other customers I HIGHLY recommend removing the front bumper. It's only four bolts and easily drops down and I was able to do this myself. Tip: Remove the L & R bottom nuts and loosen the L & R top nuts from underneath. Then get out in front and remove the remaining nuts with your hand and lift off the bumper. Easy! It made inserting the bolts into the frame a million times easier. (See photos) The most difficult part was refitting the plastic air pan underneath. I basically just held it up in it's approximate position from the front then, through the bumper opening, used a Sharpie to trace around the receiver frame. Then I used some tin snips to cut out the shape and went back and forth, fitting and trimming until it fit adequately. (See photos) Cutting out the notch in the plastic of the front bumper for the receiver to go through was pretty easy. I held up the bumper in place while I had my son mark the sides of the receiver. Then I just used a dry wall knife to cut out that section. I took a little too much off. You can use my photo as a guide to see how far you'll need to go. Apart from that the installation was really easy. I'm extremely pleased with this product and of course etrailer was awesome. :D 316073

Quality paint job and arrived in new conditioned, no scrapes or issues. Instructions pretty clear and actually one step wasn't necessary do to the bolts fitting thru the small holes in the frame. Very happy with the purchase. Looks great, and all hidden behind and out of sight. That was one of my biggest concerns. Took about 2 1/2 hours to install, but that could have been 1 1/2. I took my time and painted the nuts and washers, greased the chassis points for rust prevention. All in all quite satisfied and would do it again. 411088

This is the second front mounted hitch I have installed. The first one was for me and the second one was for my son. Both were installed on class c motor homes with ford e 450 chassis. The hardest part of the install is cutting the plastic cover to fit on the bottom. My grand kids race quads and some of the tracks we go to may require us to get pulled out if its muddy. That is the reason for the front hitch. This may not be the last hitch install as other parents have inquired about the hitch. If they ask I would put it on for them. Mike 691828

I just received and installed the front hitch on my 2013 Jayco Greyhawk 31SS Ford E450 motor home. Was not hard to install. Finished the install in under an hour and a half. Instructions were good. I felt it was easier to take the bumper off rather than leaving it on but loose. Made it easier to put the bolts through the frame after drilling out the two front holes to a bigger size. Cutting the plastic under the bumper was simple. Relocation of the license plate was also simple. Did not have to cut any tabs. Moved it over and drilled into license plates bottom tabs and zip tied to plastic under bumper.Easy Peasy. etrailer is a great company. Very knowledgeable and will research the information for you. They answer your questions in a timely manner. Will order from them again. 677074

The video install process made this super easy to install. I am driving a 2018 Jayco 29MV and wanted to put bicycles on the front with an optional vehicle pull behind. Once I figured out what I needed to do the installation, i was able to perform it by myself within 2 hrs. However, it would have been much easier with 2 or 3 people. I was unable to re-install the under body flash shield because once you cut out the sides, then you would also need to cut out a section of the middle and frankly there just wouldn't be enough shield to put back in place, so its no longer there. 647922

Installed the front hitch on my 2018 Thor Chateau 30D. It is built on a 2017 Ford E450. Easy install, only “hitch” was the plastic splash guard did not fit on without more material cut out than the instructions indicated. I used others advice and marked the bumper bolts with a paint pen, then completely removed the bumper. Easy access at that point. etrailer is a great company to do business with. Would highly recommend this product and this company. 613881

Very easy to install with no help. But beware - the video shows cutting the bumper facia all the way thru, don't do it, only a small portion needs cut out above the line, if done properly it's not noticeable when it's all done (unlike the video). Be sure to read the directions. Also directions say NOT to remove the bumper, not sure why. Once I installed the hitch the bumper went back in with no problem. My splash guard needed a bit more trimming than the directions called for, not sure if it's due to the year model (mine is a 2014), once I did the initial cut and put it back in place I could easily see where more cutting was needed. I did the whole project - alone - in just a few hours. I would definitely recommend this hitch. Draw-tite hitches are well made and - in my experience - always easy to install, not to mention etrailer's great price. 611310

Comments

According to Draw-Tite, the amount of bumper fascia that needs to be trimmed can vary by model year as some use a longer fascia.

Definitely a solid hitch addition. Now the bikes go on the front and the hitch is nearly invisible when the rack is not installed. It is easiest to just remove the front bumper for the fastest installation. Trimming the splash shield is a trial and error procedure, but cut easily. I like it. 564750

I'm using the front-mount receiver to mount my spare tire. I have also used it to mount a bicycle rack. 561484

I installed this hitch receiver on the front of our 2018 E-450 based Jayco motor home so I could mount the spare tire on the front. E-trailer customer service is superb. I ordered at noon on a Tuesday and it was on my door step by noon on Thursday. The receiver is well made and installed easily. I removed the front bumper for access to the bolts. Two things to note: (1) If you follow the instructions and enlarge the front frame hole to become the forward bolt hole for the receiver, it will locate the receiver about an inch to far back on the truck frame for the contour of the frame to match the contour of the receiver mounting surface. I choose to use this location and shim the receiver away from the truck frame with a 5/16" thick washer stack at each bolt location. I also used slightly longer grade 8 bolts and nuts. (2) The inside of the truck frame seems to have an overlap weld which creates an uneven surface for the receiver mounting reinforcement plates to lay on. Some minor grinding and shaping of the plates will allow them to rest flat inside the frame rails. The bumper lower cutout was easy. The splash pan trimming I did by repeated trial fitting and several rounds of trimming. I installed additional stainless hardware to attach the front of the splash pan to the bumper. I'm very pleased with this receiver. It let me mount my spare exactly the way I wanted it. 550945

With a local shop doing the installation; I am pleased with the front trailer hitch. I use it for bicycles on my adventure van where the rear doors already have a swing-away tire and storage box. 529419

Excellent. The hitch has proven to pair very well with a Kuat 2 Bike Rack. This rack doesnt extend too far from the front of the van and allows for easy mounting! great combo for the adventure van!
