For travel trailers, choose RV-rated designs since the rear of a trailer sees extra movement and leverage. If you carry small frames or kids' bikes, look for layouts that don't depend on fitting over top bars, and plan on adding bungees or ties when you need extra stability.
Use racks approved for trailer use. The back of a trailer sees extra movement from the longer wheel base and less sophisticated suspension, which adds leverage and strain. If you're using a bumper mount, positioning a receiver on top of the bumper can help ground clearance. Verify your trailer's mounting point first.
It depends on the rack's tilt or swing features. Without a tilt, opening a tailgate can be blocked even with the rack folded. Tilting before loading or placing a bike on the outside position can make access easier. If your bike has fenders, some wheel-mount styles may not be compatible—check before buying.
Add your own theft deterrents. A small lock on the hitch pin can replace a cotter pin, and a lock through the clamp arms can help, but check the shackle clearance so it actually locks. Use bungees or ties to further secure the bikes and reduce movement. Test your setup before a long trip.
