Best Bike Rack for Step Through Bikes with Baskets on a Travel Trailer

Updated 06/13/2026 | Published 06/11/2026

Question:

I need a bike rack for 2 bikes that will fit a standard 2 inch hitch receiver. It will be used on the back of an RV travel trailer so it will be a rough ride at times. Also, my bikes have small baskets on the front and they do not have the standard straight bar that runs from the steering stem back to the seat post. You all have tons of bike racks.....which would you recommend given my needs. Tks. Guy

Hi Guy,

That's a great question, and thank you for providing so much detail. It really helps narrow things down. Based on your description, it sounds like you may have cruiser style or step through bikes with front baskets, and that combination definitely requires a little more thought when choosing a rack for the back of a travel trailer.

For your setup, I recommend the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for 2 Bikes, part # Y94MX. One of the biggest reasons is that it secures the bikes by the wheels rather than the frame, so you don't have to worry about the lack of a traditional top tube. It is also approved for use on the back of a travel trailer, which is important because the forces at the rear of a trailer are much more severe than what a rack experiences on the back of a vehicle. The wheel mounted design also does a nice job of avoiding interference with front baskets since there is no frame clamp reaching across the bike.

Another thing I like about this rack is its 80 pound per bike capacity. Even if your current bikes are standard cruisers, that gives you plenty of room if you ever move to heavier bikes or e bikes down the road. Yakima has been making bike racks for a long time and has a strong reputation for building durable products. They've also been great to work with whenever warranty or replacement part questions come up, which gives me a lot of confidence recommending their racks. I think you'd be very happy with the HoldUp for your travel trailer and bike setup.

The one thing I'd like to confirm is whether your bikes have front fenders. Some wheel mounted racks can interact differently with certain fender designs, so if your bikes have fenders, a photo would be very helpful before I give you a final recommendation. If they don't have fenders, you are good to go!

Where do you typically ride once you get to camp, smooth bike paths, gravel trails, or some of the rougher forest roads?

Heather, Thank you. We just got home from a camping trip so I will send you photos of our bikes tomorrow as they do have fenders. We typically ride on paved roads and packed stone trails. We are not mountain bikers! I will check out your recommendation....but also send you the photos. Thanks, Guy

@GuyB Welcome home! I hope you guys had a good time. If you could send those photos to [email protected], I'd like to see how far the fenders come down. The hooks on this bike rack may not interfere with them, but I want to be sure. Where did you go, if you don't mind my asking?

Heather, I am unable to insert photos into this reply. Is there an email address I can use to send you the photos?? The bike rack front tire clamp bar may fit right in front of our bikes' fenders but you are the expert....I will trust your advice once you have received the photos. Guy
