Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.



Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.


To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.


Features of the Equal-i-zer

Head Tilt Adjustment

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage on your entire system, making it easier to install and hook up the spring bars. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert the rivet into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer. Most setups take four to six washers to achieve the proper height. Once you get the desired tilt, insert the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank and then tighten it in place.



Construction of Spring Arms

The Equal-i-zer spring bars are not made of traditional spring steel. Rather, they are constructed of a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Chromoly steel has a high tensile strength for extreme durability. It also features excellent dexterity, which allows it to give as required and then return softly back to its original form. This pliability is important in minimizing trailer bounce while still ensuring that the weight of your rig is adequately distributed.

The unique sway control brackets of the Equal-i-zer are easy to install and simple to use. They clamp onto your trailer frame and conveniently adjust to a position anywhere between 29 inches and 32 inches back from the coupler. These brackets provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar into place on the L-shaped brackets. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.


Equal-i-zer Hitch 4-Point Sway Control

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved through the rotational friction that is present in the weight distribution hitch itself. Within the system head, the downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combatted by the upward pressure exerted by the spring bars that are mounted in the sockets. This upward force is placed on the spring bars on either side of the system, creating the rotational friction that, essentially, forces your trailer in line. This type of friction is responsible for two points - one on either side of the trailer - of the 4-Point Sway Control. To ensure that enough tension is present, make certain that the socket bolts in the head assembly are torqued to at least 45 foot-pounds.

The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Letting the spring bars hang freely minimizes the rotational friction described earlier. It also eliminates your system's ability to create the type of direct friction that has been shown to be so effective in limiting trailer sway.


This direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the Equal-i-zer system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.


Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the Equal-i-zer uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway control system.

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Equalizer Weight Distribution System with a four point sway control and an included weight distribution shank. It has a 4000 lb gross trailer weight and a 400 lb ton weight. Part number EQ37-040-ET. So you've decided you need a weight distribution system. The Equalizer Weight Distribution System uses steel on steel friction to help prevent and correct trailer sway. The sway control brackets ensure that your trailer stays in line with your tow vehicle. Our spring bars flex appropriately over uneven terrain for more control than Even Ride without balance. The system includes the head assembly. It uses a traditional washer system to provide tilt in the head.

The more tilt in the head, the more lift in the tongue weight. Because it uses the four point sway control, there are no chains. The spring bars are easily installed with the included lift handle. The whole thing is made out of a dipped steel construction, so it's going to be durable and resist rust and corrosion. As with all weight distribution systems, it helps your tow vehicle get back to a stock height with the added weight of a trailer.

Let's take a look at that now. I've gone ahead and removed the weight distribution and disconnected from the trailer. Let's go ahead and get a stock measurement of our tow vehicle. Here at the rear we've got about 39.5 inches to the underside of the wheel well. At the front, I've got about 38.5 inches. You want to be sure and record these measurements, because these are the measurements we want and try and get back to when we engage our weight distribution system. I've gone ahead and hooked my trailer back up to my tow vehicle without weight distribution.

Now let's take a look and see what the tow vehicle looks like. Here in the back I'm squatting about an inch, and here in the front my vehicle is tilted upward about 3/4 of an inch. Weight distribution should correct that; let's hook it up. Now I've got my trailer hooked back up and my weight distribution engaged. Let's go ahead and take another measurement on our tow vehicle. Here in the back we're back to stock height.

Same with the front. Excellent! Not using a weight distribution system can cause issues with your traction, tire wear, and handling. Getting your vehicle back to stock with a weight distribution system can help prevent those problems. Now let's show you how it's installed. First thing to note about using a weight distribution system is you need to make sure your trailer or camper is fully loaded and ready to go. This ensures proper weight is being applied to your tow vehicle. The shank can be installed in either the rise or drop position. The head is adjustable along the shank. You just need to make sure that the top of the ball is level with the top of the coupler when your trailer is level. The kit includes eight washers to adjust the tilt of your head. You don't have to use all eight, you just need to make sure to use enough to get your vehicle back close to stock. Our spring bars fit inside the weight distribution head and are lifted on the L-bracket with the included tool. We can then place in our snap-L pin to help keep the spring bar in place. This is where that steel on steel friction takes place, helping us with our sway control. Finally, our link plates are installed on our trailer's A-frame with the L-brackets on the outside. You just want to make sure and void your battery box or your propane tanks. Those may have to be relocated. It needs to be positioned between 27 and 32 inches from the center of your coupler. If you've used all eight washers for your head tilt and your vehicle still isn't back to stock, you can adjust your L-brackets. That's going to complete our look at the Equalizer Weight Distribution System with four-point sway control and an included weight distribution shank. The Equilizer hitch has made towing much, much better for a short, single axle travel trailer. There is zero sway. The only issue we've had is that the brackets mounted to the trailer frame tend to slide or tilt occasionally, so periodic adjustment is needed. The hitch isn't as noisy as I was expecting. I think this hitch saved our lives and probably others. This is my first "big" camper I've been towing trailers and pop ups for years. A 23' Grey Wolf Toyhauler with my 2011 Ford Expy as the TV out in front. I had been talking with more mature campers from work about the high prices of some of these WD hitches.... who wisely advised... don't go cheap on tires, brakes or hitches. I bit the bullet, took a little heat from the wife, cause I had it professionally installed too. (This thing is massive). I'll add pics next time I hookup. Plus rolling on $1200 of new Good Year AT's So me and my wife had just pulled out from Clabough's camp grounds after a week of great exploring, great weather and fun smoky Mtn motorcycle riding. We were heading north on 441, not to the highway yet. Probably not on the road more than 20 min or so driving through a small town. Maybe Severville Anyway, 4 lanes, maybe 40mph or 45mph. Following a car, and just talking. Then what seemed to be out of no where, I looked up to see the car was stopped at a red light right in front of us. When did that light turn red!! I had less than a second to react. I knew I couldn't stop. No one coming left or right at the intersection. No one to my right. It was tight, but I might be able to make it.... I swerved HARD right, then back with a HARD left... missing the car in front of us, and the sidewalk. We went sailing through the intersection totally unscathed... and THE CAMPER FOLLOWED ALONG PERFECTLY!! Silence. Neither of us said a word for what seemed like 5 minutes. I'm not even sure who spoke first. I recall someone saying like, did that just happen? And "we're not doing that again" So guys, it may seem like a lot of money, but I'd say it's pretty cheap. Just bought a new Travel Trailer, had been using a Reese Weight distribution set up with traditional sway bar. This system worked well but had the tractor trailers pushing me around and on windy days I had to reduce highway speeds dramatically. So, I chose to upgrade to the Equalizer for the new TT. I had the Professionals install it since it was raining but the videos and information on etrailer make me confident I could have done it with the correct tools. The Equalizer was fantastic on the 75 mile ride home in the rain with heavy Tractor Trailer traffic. Had little to no sway. Very pleased with my decision. This is one slick setup. I got it tuned in perfectly on the second try. Instructions are very specific and very accurate. I found only one thing that could be better - the bolts that hold the ball mount to the receiver bar are too long, at least 1" too long. A standard socket won't fit over them to torque the nut - shorter bolts or a warning that a deep socket is needed would be nice. This seems like an anomaly, as everything else was a perfect fit. The installation process was fairly easy, but if you're planning on doing it yourself, keep in mind you'll need the 1 7/8" thin-walled socket (EQ70-00-4800), and most likely a 3/4 drive extension to clear the head, as well as a torque wrench that can read up to 420+ lb/ft. I wish etrailer would sell the extension like they do the socket, though - I lucked out and found one locally, but they only had one, and they were the only store I could find in 50 miles that had 3/4 drive extensions. Hitching is a little more difficult than using a chain WD system because the arms are so hard to get into position, but not needing a separate anti-sway mechanism is great, and after dealing with a failure and warranty claim with a competitor's chain-based system, the quality, customer service, and warranty terms of the Equal-i-zer really set it apart. 467432

Well I have owned this hitch for a year and it has worked flawlessly. In July we took our camper on a 2000 mile trip and we had no issues with the hitch at all. We were in all types of traffic through large and small cities, we didnt have any sway issues because the hitch, now broken in, works much better than I knew it would. I had installed the pads under the slide bars and use the grease to quieten it down when in all the turns I made during this trip. I dont believe there is a better hitch out there that can tame my 38 ft 9000lb Jayco than this Equalizer. Best money spent here. 11/7/17

We just moved from a light weight Lance to a much heavier Arctic Fox. I was inclined to use the same Fastway hitch but most of the AF owners recommended the Equalizer. I had to order the shank separately to get the right size (thanks Ford) but it all came in two (very) heavy boxes. Assembly was fairly straight forward and adjustments are easy. Quality wise, the EQ hitch appears better built than the Fastway and I really like the heavier duty construction of the parts that mount on the tongue of the trailer. The tension bars are easier to manage being straight but this also means that you have extra little parts to lose so we'll be packing a spare kit. The hitch portion itself is a heavy duty affair, much more so than I had imagined. Quality of materials and fit and finish are first rate and with the extra holes, I can use a cable lock to secure the hitch when it's off the truck. As always, we got the best price on etrailer and shipping was very quick. This is definitely a "buy once cry once" decision and etrailer's support made this an easy purchase. 469404
