Recommended Hitch, Wiring Harness, and Brake Controller for a 2021 Kia Telluride?

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 01/17/2026

Question:

Have a 2021 Telluride. Will a class III hitch, Curt C68JR and a Curt Echo be all I need to pull a small camper, something like a Colman 13b? Would airbags or helper springs be necessary?

Hey Robert. A class III hitch like the Curt item # C13420 is exactly what you need for your 2021 Kia Telluride. It is custom fit and has a 5,000 lbs towing capacity. You'll easily be able to pull a 3,500 lbs Colman 13b with this hitch.

The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness item # C68JR you referenced, will fit your 2021 Telluride if your have the factory tow package. This is a 7-way connector that will allow you to control all the lighting functions and brakes on a trailer. The 2020 - 2022 Tellurides are interesting because some of them came with the factory harness even if they did not have the tow package. I recommend checking underneath your Kia, behind the rear wheel on the driver side to see if you have the connector. I attached a picture below to that'll show you where to look.

The Curt Echo item # C51180 is great option for adding a brake controller to your Kia. The Echo plugs directly into your Telluride's 7-Way connector and allows you to control the settings through an app on your phone. It is a proportional brake controller that slows or stops your trailer when your Kia decelerates. It uses Bluetooth to communicate with your phone so you will never have to worry about losing signal. If your phone dies it automatically uses the default settings you program in.

The suspension enhancement options available for a 2021 Telluride are pretty limited. The Air Lift 1000 item # AL29PD would be the best option. However, I recommend addressing any squatting issues in the rear end with a weight distribution system like item # EQ37040ET. This system works with trailer's weighing up to 4,000 lbs and tongue weights up to 400 lbs. It also has built in sway control that will keep your trailer in line with your Kia if you get passed on the highway by a semi, get hit by a strong gust of wind, or make a sudden lane change.

Here are a couple of other parts, I recommend adding to your towing setup:

etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar for 2" Hitch Receivers item # e38FV

No-Drill Mount Bracket, Long item # 18136

Curt Mounting Bracket for 7-Way Connector Plug item # C67UR

Does your Kia have the factory tow package? If not and it doesn't have that port let me know where it says Add Comment and I'll get you the parts you'll need to add a 7-way connector.

Agree w/ Jarred's response. I had a '24 Santa Cruz (pretty certain it's the same platform as the Telluride). I didn't have the "tow package" but the SCs were all considered tow-ready. Installing the wiring harness was a breeze. For the bracket to mount the 7-pin connector, I actually opted for the magnetic mount because the Curt hitch didn't have an easy place to mount without drilling. I also used the Echo brake controller (we were towing a 2700lb popup camper). While I do recommend it instead of the process of installing a separate brake controller, the app was finicky sometimes in terms of being consistent with the sensitivity settings and sometimes would "stuck" applying minimal braking (overcome by tapping the big red emergency brake button once with a small jerk of the vehicle). Again, for small towing jobs like this, I think it's just enough functionality without invading your vehicle's wiring.
