Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 1,500 lb trailer with Tongue Weight of 200 - 300 lbs

Updated 06/24/2026 | Published 06/20/2026

Question:

Hello e-trailer, I have a small home build “foamie” camper, that unlike other “foamies” is actually standing height. The total weight, incl food, clothing, etc, is just under 1500Lbs, tongue weight varying between 200-300Lbs. It is hard to find a load distributing system for that light of a trailer, but I also like the sway control that most load distribution systems provide. Especially since the trailer is so light, yet still standing height, it is prone to side winds, though 80 of the weight is in the bottom 1/3. Anyway, I found the Blue Ox 350Lbs TW on your site. But some reviews say that the sway control is kind of slow in response. I also saw the Equal-i-zer 400Lbs TW. But I can find very little in the reviews on the sway control. And then there is the Fastway e2 at 450Lbs TW…… Since I would be purchasing it almost more for sway control than for load leveling, I was wondering if you had any feedback for me on what system might be most appropriate for my set-up. Any other suggestions are also welcome. Thanks!!

Happy to help Marco, appreciate the details!

Since your trailer's loaded weight is around 1,500 lbs and has a tongue weight of 200-300 lbs, I think the Equal-i-zer # EQ37040ET would work the best. Its 200-400 lb tongue weight range is a match for your trailer and it has sway control.

The Equal-i-zer uses built in 4-point sway control, which is one of the most effective sway controls available. Instead of waiting for the trailer to start swaying before reacting, the system constantly resists trailer movement through friction at the hitch head and spring bar brackets.

For your setup, where sway control is most important, the Equal-i-zer would be my choice.

One thing you'll want to verify is that your trailer frame has enough room to mount the L-brackets. The L-brackets need to be mounted 27" to 32" back from the center of the coupler along the trailer frame. If your foamie has a standard A-frame tongue with that amount of clear space available, you should be in good shape for installation.

What towing conditions do you usually encounter?

Thanks for that! We mostly drive highways (55-65mph) and byways (less than 55 mph). Most of that is mountainous terrain. And then short distances dirt roads. Once in a while for a longer trip we hit the interstate, but I tend to stay in the right lane and not go over 65 mph. What triggers sway the most with the light weight foamie is either side winds or when passing trucks (or get passed by trucks). The frame on the foamie would allow for the set-up you recommend. Thanks!!

@MarcoW No worries my friend, happy to help! Thanks for verifying the frame before ordering, definitely wanted to make sure it's a fit before you ordered. I think you'll see a clear difference after adding this weight distribution to your to setup. Let us know how it goes and we appreciate you choosing etrailer!
