An example of sag on a truck's rear axle under a heavy load. The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System levels the vehicle.

When hauling heavy loads in the cargo area or by pulling a trailer, you will often see the rear of the vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but more of the vehicle's weight as well. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall vehicle handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. The resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with the vehicle's factory suspension to keep the vehicle level and improve your driving performance.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system has a vehicle-specific bracket that will be bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits one inch above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape provides increased resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping the vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's or passenger's side of the vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer helping to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or passing of a semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to the vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside quicker.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened as the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Compared to the competition:

Timbren's suspension enhancement systems are much easier to install than air springs - no air hoses are needed to be run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments necessary. The rubber construction causes Timbren's springs to be more elastic than similar products constructed of micro-cellular urethane. More elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

2000 Toyota Tacoma

Having purchased a cargo trailer, I thought it might be wise to beef-up the rear suspension on my 2000 Tacoma. I found the Timbrens on etrailer, and it sounded like they might work well, so I purchased a set and installed them. According to the instructions, there should be about a 1/2" gap between the top of the springs, and contact with the bottom of the Timbren - unless you have a CAP on the truck! The gap pretty much evaporated because of the fiberglass Leer cap. So, I'm getting contact a lot of the time. Result is, my ride has become stiffer than I'm used to, but not so much that it bothers me. Like my wife said, " It's a truck! Hello!!" (OK, I'm satisfied with the product.) 110248

Comments
Keep in mind that the gap Timbren refers will diminish as the springs wear. Since the truck is a 2000, it probably has some miles on it and if it has hauled heavy loads in the bed or has pulled a trailer, then the leaf springs may just be worn.

A year later and 5,304 miles pulling the trailer, I think the Timbrens are a good investment. With a typical pull of 2,555 lbs of trailer and load, and approximately 300 lbs of tongue weight, Im finding the truck actually rides better than it does with no load. And, theres no maintenance whatsoever!

2001 Toyota Tacoma

Just what the truck asked for... I’m a Farrier, I carry a full workshop in the bed of my truck 24/7. I drive a 2001 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. After a couple months I redid the entire front and rear suspension and added heavy duty rear leafs. After about a year of driving and also adding more tools the truck began to sag a little bit. Ofcourse, the first thing anyone suggested was “airbags” but they didn’t know the use of the truck or where the truck goes from day to day. Being a Farrier, I travel on everything from paved freeways to down and dirty “4lo” back roads. I needed a maintenance and care free system that would allow for over extension and hold the extra weight of my tools and sometimes even a trailer. I did a ton of research and even talked to the Technician Staff at each company. I ultimately decided to go with Timbren SES Kit. It’s easy to install, maintenance free, free floating, and has the best warranty in it’s category. Since I have a custom setup (Ubolt Flip Kit from AllProOffroad) I had to design and build some landing pads to allow for an “interference free” contact with my system. After the first day of working, I am COMPLETELY satisfied with its performance and how my truck feels and drives. As for ”Etrailer” I am very happy with all the information and excellent customer service. I received my parts 2 days before it’s orignal date which makes me super Happy! 570702

2004 Toyota Tacoma

Installed these on my 2004 Tacoma 4 door, 4WD. They were great with a trailer on back and handled the load great. Without the load of a trailer it is like riding a hard tail Harley. In the process finding something different to help the sagging springs. 585701

Comments
The Timbren Aeon springs are meant to be used on a suspension thats in good repair. Normally, the vehicles ride will be completely normal until the rear suspension is loaded either from cargo or by the tongue weight of a trailer, at which time the suspension will compress far enough that the Timbren springs come into play.

This product has worked extremely well. Ride is a little rougher but very stable when towing our teardrop and kit or hauling tools to worksite. I do have experience with airbags but feel a more stable ride in corners, etc with this product 480957

1993 Toyota Tacoma

This is a great product for when i am towing. It really beefs up the rear suspension and prevents the proverbial Tacoma sag. However, since it is not easily removable, it stays in place all the time. It makes the ride rough, and you can feel every little bump. No give. I knew this going in, but I think air shocks would have been a better decision. Overall happy with the performance. 315475

Haven't installed yet but the customer service and delivery was excellent so far. I called Timbren prior to ordering to double check I was selecting the correct product for my 2wd Tacoma, which actually needs the 4wd drive version the the Timbren bumpstops bc of the TRD model. Timbren immediately picked up the phone and quickly assisted me. 161517

the timbren tdr3500ca were a very easy install on my 2018 ram drw 4x4. The included spacers were needed and left about 1/2 inch clearance. empty ride is same. Will load arctic fox 990 soon and expect great results. I elected not to reinstall my air bags, when trading trucks. I also have upper stable loads and will not miss the air bags. ordering was easy and free shipping was fast. 612456

With my af 990 camper installed they are fantastic. More stable than my previous airbags and the ride is better than empty. Trouble free and no hassle. Install and forget. Very happy.

I ordered timbrens for the front and rear of my chevy 2500. I have a 2000 lb truck camper and I wanted something to help carry the load a little better. I had no idea that my front bump stops had worn away to almost nothing until I installed these. They have worn well and performed well so far. 628835

Ordered these from Etrailer.com and got them in three days. Super easy to install on Ram 3500. Didn't have to jack up truck. Assembled is 6.5" on Ram 3500, I had 7" to play with so plenty of room. Haven't added a load yet as 5th wheel is on order. Looking forward to it. 609612

Took longer to take it out of the box than to install them on my ram 1500... dish soap and twist and upward pressure with both hands(if your tough enough) and “presto” the job is done. About 1 1/2” clearance (bottom of new bump stop to top of axel) when empty and a little over 1 3/4” drop with a 16’ enclosed trailer weighing 4400#s totally loaded. Rides great and stabilized the truck. 771782

I have a Timbren rear suspension system on my 1982 Chevy truck that I still own, and after 20 years they still work fine. This latest set installed easily on my 2001 F-250 and they work just as well with and without a load. 440182

Review from a similar Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I bought these for a 2012 GMC 2500 Duramax. The installation for these was much easier than I anticipated (I can't say the same for the front suspension system.) Just lift up your truck, pry out the stock bumper stops, line up the Timbren springs with a 2x4 underneath, and lower the truck. The weight of the bed/frame is enough to get the Timbren spring to seat correctly. This took me less than 10 minutes. Ride quality seems to have improved as big bumps on the road are less rough. These keep the truck from sagging underneath the weight from a trailer, too, though I didn't have much problem with that to begin. Overall, I like this addition. Easy. 48427

Ask the Experts about this Timbren Vehicle Suspension

  • Can Timbren Suspension Kit Install on 2003 Toyota Tacoma with 2.5 inch Lift
Timbren does make spacers like the part # A25723-90AH00 for a 1 inch spacer and # TA25722-90P00 for a 1/2 inch spacer which you can use to take up extra space created by lift kits so that you can still use their suspension enhancement kits like the # TTORTAC4A that you referenced. You'd need to use an amount of spacers that takes up the added distance created by the lift. So in this case you'd need two 1-inch spacers and a 1/2 inch spacer per side of the vehicle.

  • Which Timbren Kit Fits 2004 Toyota Tacoma
Suspension enhancement in general does not cushion the ride quality to make it softer. It if anything will always make the ride a bit rougher as it's stiffening up the suspension to reduce sag. The Timbren kit part # TTORTAC4A is a fit for your 2004 Toyota Tacoma and would help reduce sag in your suspension when towing but would not really smooth out anything. Since you have a lift kit you'll also need a spacer part # A25723-90AH00 for every inch of suspension lift your lift kit provided.
