Video Transcript for RockyMounts SwitchHitter Roof Bike Rack Review

Today, we are going to be taking a look at the RockyMount Switch Hitter roof-mounted bike rack in black, part #RKY1270. This versatile rack lets you carry different styles of bikes on your vehicle's roof. It works with 9 mm quick-release skewers, as well as 12 mm and 15 mm through axles. As you can see, it features a tray cutout here at the front so it can accommodate disk brakes. It has a low profile design. It is going to fit your round, square, aero, elliptical, and most factory roof racks including those crossbars with T-slots.

It has a ratcheting rear strap that is adjustable along the wheel tray so it can accommodate different size bikes. It features a sizable wheel tray so it can accommodate tire widths up to 3 inches wide. Here at the end of the bike rack, it also includes an integrated cable lock; although, you will have to provide your own Rocky Mounts locking core and you can pick that up here at Etrailer.com with part #RKY0332. The bike rack itself is made out of a lightweight corrosion-resistant cast aluminum with an ionized finish. The whole thing features a limited lifetime warranty. Now that we have gone over some features, I will go ahead and show you how to get it installed.

First thing we will do is go ahead and set it in position on our roof rack. We will need to make sure to have a minimum crossbar thread of at least 18 inches, we have got about 28 here. Then, once we have it in the area that we might want it, lets go ahead and take off the cap here. That's going to allow us to get to our hardware so we will want to make sure to bring our strap underneath our bar and then we will reconnect it where it was, right there. Then we can take our included tools and tighten it down. What that is doing is drawing the strap underneath and back over the top making a nice snug fit so there is no reason to over-tighten.

Once we have got it nice and snug, we can then grab our cap and put it back on. Then, here at the rear, we can slide our top portion of our clamp over and center it on our crossbar. We will bring in our bottom portion of the clamp, along with our hardware, and get that started. Now, when you tighten these down, you want to be sure that you tighten them down evenly. We will do a little bit on one side and then alternate back and forth.

Then we got it. Now we will go ahead and show you how to load up a bike. We are going to do a through-axle first. We will need to make sure that our rear strap is undone. We want to be sure to set the rear wheel into the tray first just to help take some of the weight off and then we can line up our axle. Then, we will take the skewer from our bike and bring that through. Once we got it all the way through, then just tighten it up. Once we've got it nice and secure, then we can move on back to the rear wheel strap. We can just put it through the ratchet and we can also hold down on both sides to make sure that it has a nice and secure fit. Now, that is it for our through-axle. Now, I will show you how to load up a standard fork mount. We will just need to use the included skewer so we will set that in place first. Now, this can be installed in either direction. We will get that started. We want to leave just enough room for our fork to sit on either side. So, we will bring our bike up. We'll want to set our rear wheel in just like before to help take off some of the weight. Then, we can set our forks in between the skewer just like that. Then, to tighten it down, you'll just want to be able to close up your skewer just enough to squeeze the fork. The way you can tighten it up is to just take one hand here and just tighten it up here and then just kind of slowly check it over time. We can close it up. As you can see, it is not going anywhere. Then, just like before, for our rear wheel strap, want to make sure that it is center with our tire and we will go between our spokes, down through, and then we can pull down both sides. Now, with our bike all loaded up and secure, lets go ahead and take it on our test course and see what it looks like in action. This is our test course. Lets start with the slalom. This shows side-to-side action such as turning corners or evasive maneuvering. Then on to our alternating speed bumps. This shows twisting action such as hitting curbs, potholes, road debris, or uneven pavement. Last of all, the solid speed bumps. This shows up and down action such as driving through a parking lot or parking garage or driving in and out of a driveway. That is going to complete our look at the RockyMount Switch Hitter roof-mounted bike rack, part #RKY1270.

Great quality, my bike is very stable with this rack no concerns about it coming loose while driving. Wish I would've purchased the lock accessory as it would come in handy. Very well made. 657520

  • How To Determine If the RockyMounts SwitchHitter LS Roof Bike Rack Will Clear the Rear Hatch
In regards to the RockyMounts SwitchHitter LS Roof Bike Rack part # RKY1270, the distance from the center of the mounting clamp to the end of the tray is 53". Therefore, you will need to measure from the center of the front cross bar on your roof rack while in the forward most position to the rear edge of the roof. According to my research, the distance from the center of the front cross bar on the roof rack to the rear edge of the roof on a 2020 GMC Terrain is 53" so the RockyMounts...

  • RockyMounts SwitchHitter on a 2017 Toyota RAV4 SE with OEM/Factory Crossbars
The RockyMounts Switch Hitter, part # RKY1270, is sized to fit most factory crossbars. I went to the warehouse and measured the size of the mounting clamps for this rack. The front mounting point is a flexible rubber strip that can fit up to a 2- inch thick crossbar. The rear is an adjustable, screw-mounted assembly that can fit up to a 3-1/2 inch wide crossbar, and up to a thickness of 1-3/4 inch. This fits a wide number of crossbar shapes and sizes. You'll need to verify your vehicle's...

  • Would Swagman XTC2 Work Well on 2013 Ford Focus
A Class I hitch is rated to carry a maximum of 2 bikes. The weight of the additional bikes can be a problem, but the greater issue is when additional bikes are placed in the rack the load is moved away from the receiver tube. As the distance becomes greater, so does the amount of leverage applied to the receiver and the attachment points between the vehicle and the hitch. Excessive leverage can damage the hitch or result in the failure of the attachment points between the hitch and vehicle,...

I spoke with Kevin and he told me about setup that he used at the time he wrote the review about the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider HR1400. The security tool only has 5 sides as opposed to the basic Allen wrench with 6 sides.
