Video Transcript for Review of M-3 and Associates Enclosed Trailer Parts - Ramp Door Spring - M384FR

Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this conventional single spring, single drum ramp door spring for up to a six foot wide, enclosed trailer, has an 80 pound spring capacity. Now this part will replace your old trailer door spring with this nice heavy duty conventional ramp door spring. This ramp door spring will let you easily lift and lower the door on your enclosed trailer without risk of injury. It is designed to help take on the weight of the trailer door so that you don't have to.

This one here happens to be a single spring and a single drum system. A single spring is on the torsion rod has this cable drum here with the lift cable at the one end to lift the door. It only uses one cable to lift the door in this application. And this system is normally used in snowmobile trailers to help reduce the potential for catching a ski in the cable. This spring does reduce the wear helps prevent damage to the door hinges. Now, when you do install this, the spring is designed to be mounted one way for proper operation.

And the way you can tell that is if you look at the cable drum, it'll be stamped with an R, which means for the right side. And they do also spray painted black here for visual indication of knowing that that's for the right side. The right side is designed to mount on the curb side of the trailer. Now this part will include everything laid out here on the table. The spring itself, the mounting brackets, the hardware for the mounting brackets, the bearing, gives you 150 inches of one eighth inch diameter cable and hardware to install that. And then the set screw cover.

Now this spring system can be modified to fit your specific application. You can slide the bearing and the mounting bracket where needed, and then just cut the shaft to a shorter length. So if we put the bearing on, let's say, you're going to go all the way, to narrow as possible. And if you put the mounting bracket on. So you can see what that all installed, it will fit any words from if we measure this portion 34 and three quarter inch wide trailer door, all the way up to the widest, which would be sixty six and seven eighths inches wide. Now this is a nice sturdy steel construction.

It is made in the USA. Few specs, again. The overall length from this end, all the way to this end is going to be right at sixty six and seven-eighths inches long. The drum diameter, which is the widest diameter on this is about four and three quarter inches diameter. And the spring capacity, as we mentioned, is 80 pounds. But that should do it for the review on this conventional single spring, single drum ramp door spring for up to a six foot wide enclosed trailer, has an 80 pound spring capacity.

I installed this on a heavy fold-down ramp door that I made for hauling my Jeep in an enclosed trailer. The ramp was so heavy that I couldn’t hardly lift it by myself. I bought the dual spring model because I thought I needed it, but I don’t. One spring is all I needed. I can now lift the heavy ramp door with one hand.

Comments
A year later and I’m still very pleased with this spring assembly. Has made my life much easier. Definitely would recommend this product.

First, shipping was really fast. After I ordered I received a email saying my order had already shipped. I ordered on a Tuesday and was able to install my equipment during the weekend. I have a smaller 6 x 10 trailer and I only utilized 1 torsion spring which gave me a back up spring for reserve. After installing the unit with new tension cables my ramp door works smooth and I’m really happy to have my trailer back in service again. etrailer understands the importance of getting customers product out as soon as possible. I thank you for your professionalism and will recommend your company in the future.

Absolutely best spring replacement you can buy. Very easy to install. Just make sure you’re careful when using the extension bar for tightening. Still working great after one year and weekly use.

Great price and fast shipping. Packaged well and has everything you need besides the wrenches rods to wind spring. Very easy to install. Since I had been brackets already it took me about 45 minutes including taking the old one off. And I already had the rods to wind spring up which is a must. Thanks.

Thanks so much Ashley for the great job you did getting that product out during the Christmas season. I did the installation today ,I just finished it. All I can say is if you can follow directions and read it's very easy to install. I found the product to be as good as the OEM. I will attach pictures to show you installation, and so that you can rest your little mind that I included the safety straps and closed . Thanks again for your help.

Review from a similar M3 Ramp Springs in Trailer Ramp Springs

I've installed about five door springs so I have the process down. it's good to leave extra pipe when you cut it down to size. This leaves wiggle room for additional adjustment. You need to watch the cable angle when the door is closed. It should be as close to perpendicular the wheel as possible. If there is much angle it can rub on the ribs on the winding wheel and damage the cable. My new trailer from Cargo Mate/Continental was improperly installed and they cut the pipe too short. I could not adjust the cable angle and it ate the cable. Check the cable with the door open as well to insure it's not too close to the door opening where it can rub. The Cargo Mate/Continental trailers have the ramp cable mounting tab constructed really far outward. This is really not ideal for the way spring kits are designed. It really should be inwards about 1/2" more. This causes you to really need to do an installation with perfect leeway or the cable will have too much would angle when the door is closed or it will rub on the ramp opening when the ramp is down. I find using a pair of Vice Grips is handy for getting the cable winding pulleys wound tightly to avoid having any slack when the door is closed. If you have any slack the cable can bind up and ruin the cable. I used two old wheel barrow axles to make winding rods. No place I know of will sell the winding rods. When winding the springs stand to the side of the rods so if something goes wrong you are not in the path of where a rod could be thrown. My door closer called for winding ten times but nine actually worked perfectly. Ten spins of the spring caused the ramp door to float some. The dual spring sets up are much better because if one spring breaks the other will prevent the heavy ramp from free falling. Periodically check the cable when the door is closed for stretch. If the ramp is down on uneven ground and something heavy is loaded it can cause one cable to become out of adjustment where it needs to be tightened.

Comments
Great, I already have posted a review so I wont add more about the product or install. I will say that you need to be aware that the mounting points on the ramp MUST be set inward at least 1/2. Im not sure what specs are in the directions. One of my trailers is a a Forest River trailer and they did not correctly mount the ramp cable mounts in the correct spot. These trailers go by the names Continental Cargo and Cargo Mate out of the Waco TX plant. If you own one of these trailers the cables may rub on the door opening and cause cables to break. I do not recommend buying any Forest River trailers for this and many other reasons.

Recently purchased this trailer ramp dual spring to replace my single spring. The original spring roller from factory snapped. Cut to fit it to 75 inches. Perfect replacement. Instructions very detailed and right on. Install time with spring adjustments 1 hour. Delivery was fast and product was priced competitively. Very happy. And dual springs just make more sense.

Comments
After a year of wear and tear, working perfectly. Remember oil the springs at least monthly

Directions can be a little confusing, since I installed this on a she door, not a enclosed trailer. Left and right are painted and all was clear except on which way cable winds on drums, according to rep you wind it thru front unlike a garage door. Called to confirm because drums are labeled r and l but are reversed as your installing it,which prompted a call call.

Comments
Thanks for the follow up Brandon. This system is set up so that when you are in the trailer or shed in your case looking out of the down door, the end with the black cable drum and the red winding cone should be on your left. If you are not comfortable or experienced with the installation of torsion springs, it is highly recommended that a local garage door company complete the installation.

I have had swell results with etrailer. I am always confused why the customer satisfaction survey comes so soon. The spring is still in the box and had just arrived 3 hrs before the email to review it. I have to say the packaging is wonderful and hope the product is as good

Comments
I am happy with the way my door ramp works. I think I should take another turn on the springs to relieve more weight. I had a medical situation and have not gotten to it but the springs have plenty of lift left in them. Sure am happy with etrailer and will continue to shop with them for my towing needs

I installed the dual spring assist for my ramp door and I am very pleased as I have a bad back and was wondering how much longer I would be able to keep hauling my collector car. I live in a remote forest area and can't drive it without destroying all the work I have done to it. My trailer is older but it works well for me. Now I plan on updating the brakes and hubs next. I updated the lights with LED's and suggest everyone to do the same. Thanks, Don Parry

Review from a similar M3 Ramp Springs in Trailer Ramp Springs

Yes, I know it is recommended for personnel whom have utilized a torsion spring before, but I am definitely on the stubborn side. Before I could contact my local garage door guy, I pulled this out of the box to see if I needed to make a modification. So, I shortened the bar. I then noticed that the old one had to come down. Then I happened to notice that the placement of the plate almost lined up to the old one. Two minutes later, I was too far in the installation to not finish this job myself. Total time it took me was 1hr45min. 15 of those minutes were spent unwinding the cables because I didn't read the directions to put it on with the ramp down. Other than that, it was a breeze. Customer service was also the most amazing experience ever. I called to make sure I was ordering the right part from Pace and they informed me that my trailer was to old and to go to a recommended dealer 30 minutes away. etrailers crack staff told me to go out and measure my trailer twice, to make sure it would fit. Voila, 2 minutes later, i knew I had the right part.

The gate spring worked great and still is after a year. before I was lifting this gate by hand. This gate is several hundred pounds. With this system I can lift it with one hand with ease, well worth the money.

Review from a similar M3 Ramp Springs in Trailer Ramp Springs

First off, Deborah was awesome to deal with and had the ramp door spring shipped super fast. Thank you! I had never installed a torsion spring and this one took me two hours, including removal of the old one off a Pace cargo trailer. You might need to cut off part of the tube ends to fit your application. I put a grinding wheel on my skilsaw and chopped off 3 inches from each end. I used my existing mounts on the header and so I removed the ones on the new spring assembly...4 bolts. The mounting plates on the assembly are easy to slide to fit my application. Installation onto the header was very quick and easy. Again, four bolts that are a bit soft and easy to strip...I used my existing hardened bolts that were exact match in every respect...only harder alloy. The cables came next. I suggest using existing hardware if it's in good shape. The provided pins and cotter pin mount left too much slop at the ramp. Good bolts and a good locking nut was what I used and allowed for plenty of relaxed movement without compressing the eye of the cable end. Vise grips come in handy when rolling the cable on the drums as you'll want to keep the bar assembly from moving while loosening the drums to roll up the slack of the cables...tighten the two set bolts on each drum and you're ready to start winding the springs. Make sure the BLACK drum is mounted to your left while looking out from inside the trailer or the entire assembly will need to be flipped. I used some rebar for winding rods and ground them down a touch to fit easily inside the cavities of the spring winder. This worked well for me, but the proper winding rods are no doubt safer and should be used or simply get a professional garage door company to do the winding part and balancing for safety reasons. Once wound according to the instructions, lock the set bolts onto the rod and you can remove the winding rods. I used the top of my trailer to help hold the rod while tightening the set bolts...all the while holding another rod in the cavity for safety. From there, you will want to readjust your drums on the cables to get an equal amount of tension on each cable. One cable will likely be a lot tighter while the other relaxed upon rasing the ramp. With the door up and closed, loosen the drum set bolts on the LOOSE cable drum and spin it to get a tighter cable and lock the bolts back into place. Raise and lower the door a time or two and go back into the trailer with the door closed and readjust the drum that has cable slack until they are fairly equal. That was it and other than the appeals for safety around the entire process, it was easy to do. Unless you are used to working around stuff like this, I think having a garage door company wind the springs and adjust the drums would be money well spent to avoid any potential injuries. I doubt it would cost much because that part goes pretty quickly and they would have the experience to do it in about 15 minutes or so.

Review from a similar M3 Ramp Springs in Trailer Ramp Springs

This enclosed trailer door ramp spring pulley system is great. It is so smooth unlike the one that came wiyh my pace American trailer. Doesn't grind or squeek. Does exactly what it is supposed to for an outstanding price! Trust me, I did the research. I had to install by myself and it wasn't bad at all. Should have read the directions first so I had it turned around the wrong way. Lol. But it was a 2 minute fix to get back on track. I really am glad I found this. Definitely would recommend.

The mounting plates are adjustable so there adjusted to fit my Pace 16' trailer perfectly. I had to install the cable pulleys backwards from what the directions called for and with the set screws facing the outside walls as well. I installed mine with the door closed not open against what the directions say as well. When you put some tension of the springs with the door closed you must stretch out the springs some before using the set screws. If the springs are not stretched out some the door will barely open and stop because the springs will have to room to turn and expand. The real trick is getting the cables wound up even and tightly. I needed my parts ASAP so I paid next day air which was very cheap for such a large part.
