Video Transcript for TruRyde Trailer Suspension TRSS175 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at a spring seat for typical 2,000 pound, round trailer axles, with a 1-3/4 inch diameter. The spring seat is a necessary component of your trailer's suspension system. When mounted with a 1-3/4 inch wide leaf spring, it adds extra support and provides proper positioning for the axle. This unit's made from a durable steel construction. It welds on to a round 1-3/4 inch diameter axle, which is a typical 2,000 axle. It sits on top of a 1-3/4 inch wide spring. The cut out on the flat side of the seat surrounds the raised knob on the leaf spring to prevent turning or shifting.

It's going to provide extra support and secure positioning for the trailer axle. Please note that two spring seats are required for each axle. A few measurements to go over with you real quick. Start with the overall length, measuring edge to edge. It's going to measure about 2-1/4 of an inch long. Overall width, measures about 1-7/8 of an inch.

The height, is just shy of 1 inch, about 15/16 of an inch tall. Then this opening, right here, the rounded point, at the widest spot, that's going to give us an opening measurement of really close to an 1-1/2, maybe 1-7/16 of an inch, right in that area. That's going to do it for today's look at the spring seat for typical 2,000 pound, round trailer axles, with a 1-3/4 inch diameter.

This worked great for putting a tandem axle under the pontoon trailer. no more sway, as before, with a single torsion axle. I don't have a picture cause the trailer is still in storage, because of 10' of snow this year. 612641

I was adding some supports to a trailer deck for a friend and noticed the spring seats were rusted away, found the parts quickly on etrailer shipping was fast and the trailer is ready to get back on the road. The spring seats and u bolts kit were very reasonably priced and do the job they are supposed to do. 466811

Works as advertised. I had a local welder put these onto the axle for me. I ended up needing them since my harbor freight trailer had a metric dimensional spacing between the mounts and the axle I bought had a standard inches dimensional spacing. They were off by less than 1 inch, but I couldn't make it fit unless I welded on these brackets at the correct location for the trailer. 453641

Haven't installed the parts yet. However, everything came packed perfectly and professionally. Parts look to be of great quality and shipping was WAY faster than estimated! Will definitely continue to keep buying trailer parts from etrailer! 451852

These brackets used in conjunction with the new u-bolt kit made switching my trailer axle from being above spring to under spring. This has raised the trailer about 3 inches in height from stock. I have a new set of wheel and tires coming and this should take care of the slight slope as seen in the picture. After installing everything, I took the trailer for a test drive and it tracked nicely and behaved very good on the road. No problems. 415160

Plus: Good products for a super low price. Accomplished the goal of bringing life back to a dead trailer. The leaf springs ride much better than the stock rubber torsion axle. The new hubs and bearings roll much easier than the worn out ones they replaced. Minus: A little disappointed in the spring bushing. It seemed like cheap plastic and was quite a bit larger than the bolt so it fit loosely. This was the only real negative I have about the purchased, and that's pretty minor. Tips for etrailer: Providing a height of the spring would make spring selection easier. In our case we were starting with scratch for mounting springs, no preexisting mounting hardware. Knowing the height of the spring from mount to axle would have been helpful in selecting a spring for the proper ride height. In a snowmobile trailer application an inch or two in height makes a bit difference in approach angle when loading a sled. This was about the only measurement not listed for springs so we guessed, and it came out well for us in the end. 339174

I have a Coleman Tent trailer and our favorite camp sites are off road. Bought these along with the UBolt kit for a Coleman popup camper to do an "axle flip" or move the axle from above the springs to below the springs giving 3-4 inches of additional clearance. My popup has a 1.75" axle and Dexter doesn't make prefab kits for that axle. Spring seats had to be welded to my axle, but beyond that, the axle flip worked OUTSTANDING! If you go off road at all with your camper, I can't recommend enough doing this. Should have done it years ago! Spring seats worked great! 60459

Hey John, Im about to do the same thing to my 89 Coleman pop up. What u bolts did you use and what other items did you need? Just weld these opposite of the old ones and replace springs with u bolt?

I ordered a couple of the 1- 3/4 U bolts from eTrailer as well. Yes, weld up the perches opposite the old ones but be sure to take some time to make sure theyre aligned both vertically and horizontally. I used a level to compare the top plane of the new perches with the bottom plane of the old ones with the axle upside down and clamped it in place before welding.

Ask the Experts about this TruRyde Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension
Do you have a question about this Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension?

  • Can Leaf Springs be Mounted to the Top of Dexter Trailer Axle # 20440I-EZ-60
  • You should not flip an axle upside down because axles have a bow in them at the center which helps give them their capacity. But all you would have to do is weld on new spring seats to the top of the axle. For axle # 20440I-EZ-60 you would need 2 of spring seat # TRSS175.

  • Replacement Axle for Harbor Freight Utility Trailer
  • Since you want to change your trailer hubs to the 5-on-4-1/2 bolt pattern I suggest you select a 60-inch axle kit that includes idler hubs, such as one of the two kits shown on the linked page. These two 2K-rated axle kits include 5-on-4-1/2 hubs, bearings, races, seals, lug nuts and bearing grease. Kit # 20545I-ST-60-10 works with 8- to 10-inch wheels and kit # 20545I-ST-60-15 works with wheels from 12- to 15-inches diameter. If you trailer's existing axle is installed below your leaf...

  • Parts Needed for Over Under Axle Kit on 1-3/4 inch Diameter Axle
  • I can help you piece together an over under kit that will fit a 1-3/4 inch axle, but the part # K71-384-00 is not a fit for you as it is designed for thicker axles. You would instead want the spring seat part # TRSS175 and then the U-bolt kit part # APUBR-10 and you would have everything you would need.

  • Parts Needed to Flip Axle on a Pop up Camper
  • I have exactly what you need, but it will have to come in the form of a couple parts pieced together because an over-under conversion kit or "axle flip kit" as some people call it isn't available for the smaller 1-3/4 inch round axles. To move your leaf springs above your axles, you will want the following parts: Qty 2 - Spring Seats # TRSS175 Qty 1 - U-Bolt Kit # APUBR-10 The spring seats will be welded to the opposite side of the axle as the current spring seats. • Recommended Parts for Rebuild/Upgrade of Harbor Freight Trailer
  • The Dexter Trailer Idler Axle w/ Hubs - EZ-Lube - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 60" Long - 2,200 lbs # 20545I-EZ-60-15 is a great starting point to upgrade your trailer. This will give you a standard size axle with good bearings, hubs, and EZ-lube spindles. This is far nicer than the weird sized stuff that comes on Harbor Freight trailers. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM31994 will be a great addition to these hubs...

  • Can an Axle Over Under Kit be Made for 1-3/4 inch Trailer Axle
  • If you are okay with removing the fenders or going to a larger one that would probably be your simplest route and the way I would go if I were you. We don't have an axle over under kit for your axle size, but we could piece together one if you like. All you would need for an over-under kit for a 1-3/4 inch round axle would be the U-bolt kit part # APUBR-10 and the spring seat part # TRSS175. You would need two of the spring seats. Then for a 14 inch wheel and tire we have the part...

  • Can Leaf Springs be Mounted Below Trailer Axle # 20440I-ST-72
  • All you have to do to mount the leaf springs to the bottom of trailer axle # 20440I-ST-72 is to weld on new spring seats to the bottom of the axle. This axle has a 1-3/4 inch outer diameter so you would need 2 of spring seat # TRSS175. Welding should be done by a professional welder. Trailer suspension needs about 3 inches of space to travel so if there is not enough space then you would also have to use taller hangers. Dexter does not recommend using the over/under conversion kits...

  • Is There An Axle Flip Kit for a 2,000 Lb 1-3/4 Inch Diameter Axle
  • I do have all of the components you will need to flip the axle on your tent trailer but there is not an all inclusive kit per se to do so. However, the kits are pretty basic as all they include are u-bolts, tie plates, and spring seats. For your 1-3/4" diameter axle, I recommend using the U-Bolt Kit part # APUBR-10 with the Spring Seat part # TRSS175 (2). The only difference between these two parts and a kit like the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit is that the spring seats...

  • Trailer Axle Replacement for Conversion to Tear Drop Camper
  • For your new axle installation to convert a trailer into a tear drop you can simply have new springs seats welded onto the new axle (by an experienced welder) at the appropriate spacing for the existing suspension. The linked page displays all sizes of spring seats which are selected based on axle diameter. For the 2K Dexter round axle # 20545I-ST-72-15 which is 1-3/4-inches you would use two of spring seat part # TRSS175.

  • Axle Flip Kit for a 1,000 Lb to 2,000 Lb Trailer Axle 1-3/4 Inch Diameter
  • I have a solution that will allow you to flip your axle but there is not an all-inclusive kit for your axle size so we will need to piece together one. I assume you have a 1-3/4" diameter axle (1,000 lb - 2,000 lb) so that means you will need the U-Bolt Kit part # APUBR-10 and the Spring Seat part # TRSS175 (2). These u-bolts are 4-1/4" which is the longest we have for this width. However, I would highly doubt that you will require a 6" long u-bolt as most leaf springs are only 3/8" thick....

  • Parts Needed to Do an Over-Under Kit on a 1-3/4 inch Trailer Axle
  • When you use an over under kit like the part # K71-385-00 you end up gaining a lift that measures the diameter of your axle, plus the spring seat, and the thickness of your leaf springs. You will need to measure those items on your trailer to determine the amount of lift you would need. Since we don't have a kit designed to fit a 1-3/4 inch diameter axle, and since you aren't completely sure that is the diameter of your axle you will need to verify this before I can piece you together...

  • The axle part # 20545I-EZ-60-10 that you referenced has a 1-3/4 inch diameter and the # K71-384-00 is designed for a 2-3/8 inch axle so that would not work. What you could use is the # TRSS175 as it is a spring seat confirmed to work on this diameter axle. For a U-bolt kit you would want part # APUBR-10. You should have no problem using your current leaf springs with this axle as well.

The Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kits that you referenced are made for axles with a 2-3/8 inch round axle # K71-384-00 or 3 inch round axle # K71-385-00. • Over Under Kit Recommendation for 1-3/4 inch Axles
  • I wish we had something we could offer you, but none of the spring seats we offer are designed to fit a 1.9 inch diameter axle. The closest we have is the 1.75 inch spring seat like part # TRSS175 which wouldn't work unless you happened to incorrectly measure your axle diameter and you do have 1-3/4 inch axles. • We have two conversion kits we offer and they will work on either a 2-3/8 inch or 3 inch round axle only. They would not work on an axle that measures 1-3/4 inches. The spring seat we offer for a 1-3/4 inch axle is part # TRSS175. This is designed to be used with a typical 2,000 lb round axle.

  • Trailer axle # 20545I-EZ-72-15 could fit in place of an axle with spring seat center spacing of 57-1/8 to 57-3/8 inches. At the very most the spring seats will have to be cut off and new ones, # TRSS175, welded on by a qualified professional welder for a nominal fee. Another option is an axle-less system, # A20RS545, which is rated for 2,000 pounds and comes with idler hubs. The suspension is built in. With this type of system you will not have to worry about replacing worn suspension parts.

  • Parts Needed to Mount Trailer Axle Below Leaf Springs
  • You can mount the Dexter axle # 20545I-EZ-60-15 below the springs but you would have to weld on new spring seats # TRSS175. These are sold individually. The springs seats that come with the axle are welded to the bottom. You can't flip the axle over because then the natural bow in the axle would be facing the wrong way, the tires would stick out at the bottoms, and the capacity would be diminished.

Since your springs touch the top of the axle instead of the bottom, you will want to have new spring seats welded to the top of the axle. For an axle with a 1-3/4 inch diameter like # 20545I-EZ-72-10 that you referenced, you will want a spring seat designed...

You will want the spring seats to be welded in place by a qualified welder.

  • Can Trailer Leaf Springs be Moved from Below the Axle to the Top of the Axle
  • Some trailers have the leaf spring stack above the axle and some have it underneath. You can move the stack to the top of the axle but you will have to weld on new spring seats to the top of the axle. Use # TRSS175 for a 1-3/4 inch round axle. It will raise the height of the trailer some but you need to be aware that it also raises the center of gravity. That makes the trailer more susceptible to sway.

  • Does Over Under Kit for 1-3/4 inch Axle Require Welding
  • All you would need for an over-under kit for a 1-3/4 inch round axle would be the U-bolt kit part # APUBR-10 and the spring seat part # TRSS175 that you referenced. You would need two of the spring seats. You will need to weld the spring seats into place.

For spring seats you then would want the part # TRSS175. Some refer to this process as "flipping the axles," but since axle has a slight bow to it you can't just flip them and reinstall them under the springs using the same spring seats. You have to install new spring seats on the opposite side...

  • Can Spring Seats be Removed and Welded On in Different Spots on Dexter Trailer Axle 20440I-ST-60
  • Yes! You can weld the springs seats to a different location on Dexter trailer axle # 20440I-ST-60. But instead of cutting off the ones on the axle and welding them back on I recommend getting new springs seats, # TRSS175 (sold in quantities of 1), and welding them on in the proper position. This will ensure that the springs seats are in good shape.

  • Over-Under Kit for 95 Coleman Destiny Cedar
  • It looks like you're looking for an over-under kit for your 95 Coleman Destiny Cedar. I couldn't find specific information on the axle of that trailer, so you will want to measure your axle to determine the over-under kit you will want. The Dexter Kit # K71-385-00 is a fit for 3 inch diameter axles. For 2-3/8 inch diameter axles, you will want the Dexter Kit # K71-384-00. If your axle is smaller than this at 1-3/4 inch, there is not a kit already put together, but you can use two of these...

  • How to Correct Trailer Whose Spring Hangers Do Not Line Up With Spring Seats
  • You will need to have the spring seats removed to have them or new spring seats welded to your axle at the correct locations to match your trailer's hanger spacing. For a 3-inch round axle rated between 5200- and 7200-lbs use part # TRSS300; for a 2-3/8-inch diameter 3500-lb axle use part # TRSS238; for a 1-3/4-inch diameter 2000-lb round axle use part # TRSS175. If you cannot re-position the spring seats to match the hanger spacing then you can have a qualified welder install new material...

  • Selecting a New Axle, Wheels and Tires for a 4 x 8-Foot Utility Trailer
  • An easy way to replace your axle is to use a complete kit such as Dexter # 20545I-EZ-60-15. This kit consists of the 60-inch axle, idler hubs, bearings, seals, lug nuts and grease caps - and even grease. This axle is rated for 2200-lbs and its spring centers are at 48-inches. Its hubs have the same 5-on-4-1/2-inch bolt pattern as the wheel/tire you referenced, part # AM31985 from Kenda. This kit will work with 13-inch wheels. Note that you will need to weld on new spring seats on top of...

  • How to Determine Required Trailer Axle Weight Capacity and Dimensions
  • Axle dimensions are fairly standardized. Those we sell are offered in 4 lengths, 57-1/2-inch, 60-inch, 72-inch and 89-inch. We also have axles-less trailer suspensions from Timbren that bolt on to the trailer frame and eliminate the leaf spring suspension completely which can provide excellent ground clearance when that is an important factor. You can see all of our axles on the linked page. For a 66-inch wide trailer you will probably want to use a 72-inch beam axle like # 20545I-EZ-72-10...
