Can A 2,000 lb Trailer Axle Be Flipped Upside Down To Mount Springs On Top Of Axle?

Updated 01/05/2026 | Published 09/16/2024

Question:

Hello, I purchased the E82GR axle kit to replace the axle on my utility trailer that broke. I finished up the installation yesterday, but didnt realize until I was finished that the axle appears to be meant to attatch to the top part of the leaf spring, but in my application the axle mounts to the bottom side of the axle. My concern with this is that the crown for the axle is facing down, instead of up. So my question is how bad of an idea is it to run it this way, and how much will that effect the weight capacity?

Hey Bill, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you cannot run with your axle flipped upside down. The crown in the axle must be facing up. This bend is part of what gives the axle its strength, and flipping it will weaken the setup and make things unstable and highly unsafe. All of the axles we carry have the spring seats welded to the bottom of the tube. The only way for you to safely use this axle will be to have new spring seats # TRSS175 welded to the top of the axle tube.

Hey Bill, how did things go after you welded the new spring seats on your trailer axle? Your update could make it easier for others who run into the same issue with axle orientation.
