Replacement Parts for 1987 Trailer

Updated 08/22/2025 | Published 08/05/2025

Question:

Hello - Im replacing the axles and suspension on my trailer from 1987 and need help finding parts that will fit my dimensions which seem to be different than modern options tghat are readily available - could you please help with that? Current dimensions are: Axles - Hub Face: 65 3/4 Spring Center: 51 2,000 lb rated but id like to move up to 2200 for sure and if possible 3500 lb Hubs - 5 on 4 1/2 Equalizer - 7 3/4 center to center Leaf Springs - 25 1/4 center to center Spring hangers - 2 inch hole pattern for mounting onto aluminum i-beam trailer Im thinking id need to get a 72 inch Hub Face axle and get new spring brackets welded on? any other ideas? If i do that, what would you suggest for all the other parts of the suspension kit? Should i get a whole kit or should i spec individual parts? Id love your thoughts on what i should do for hangers to fit onto my i-beam trailer as well. Id like to do this as cheaply as possible as the trailer is only used a couple times a year and for short distances. The boat sits on the trailer throughout the winter. Thanks so much for your help, - tim

Hi Tim; I can get you everything aside from the hangers. All of our standard hangers are designed to weld on but you may be able to find that bolt-on style elsewhere online or at a local shop. Hangers like those do still exist although I'm not sure how easy they are to find. We don't have complete kits but I can piece it together for you. For the rest of your setup we have the following:

-Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles - 72" Long - 2,200 lbs # T20BTR-EZ-7258

-Spring Seat for Typical 2,000-lb, Round Trailer Axles with 1-3/4" Diameter - Qty 1 # TRSS175

-Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2K Axles - 10" to 12" Wheels - 5 on 4-1/2 - Pre-Greased # AKIHUB-545-2-2K

-Curved Equalizer for 1-3/4" Wide Double-Eye Springs - 7-3/4" Long - 9/16" Center Hole # TREQE1

-3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles - 23-1/2" Long # SP-113275 (Maybe)

-3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 2,500-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/8" Long # e66SR

The axles at 72" are going to stick out 3" more on each side but it sounds like that doesn't matter to you for your purposes. You will need to weld on new spring seats to match the current measurement, I included those in the parts list. Also, Your leaf springs are fairly flat so if I had to guess they should be a bit shorter. Go ahead and measure the flat length, which would be B in the diagram below. The # SP-113275 I listed has a flat length of 25-1/4" which is probably closer to what you have now and a better fit than a leaf spring like # e66SR.

Thanks Robin - I'll take the brackets i have and ask around locally to see if i can find anything similar. I'm a bit confused on what you said about the leaf spring measurements. The springs i have measure 25 1/4 all the way across from bolt to bolt (measurement C in your diagram). Is there a way for me to upload more images to show you specific measurements? Thanks so much for all the help, - tim

@TimS I said to use B because B never changes, it is always the same. C is shorter when the leaf springs are new and longer as they flatten out and those two points separate from each other.

@RobinH i measured the flat length. If i go from the center of the bolt straight to the center of the leaf spring its 13". If i measure along the arc of the leaf spring so my tape measure follows the curve its 13 3/16". Which of the two leaf springs would you suggest for that? Thanks so much, - tim

@RobinH Hey Robin - looks like i'll be able to reuse the hangers but will need to replace the shackle straps. What set would you suggest? Again, will only be using the trailer to drop in and pull out the boat once each season (about 10 miles away) and will then store the boat on the trailer over the Winter.
