After owning this trailer hitch for one year, it still looks and operates the way it did from day one. It is extremely solid, and as far as I can tell, flawless. Highly recommended.

Comments
A year later, this hitch is still operating like new. No issues whatsoever!

Perfect fit ! Easy install with help of a $10 metric socket set -if you don’t have one. No need to drop spare tire or jack up car. Definitely helps to have an extra set of hands to lift and hold the hitch mount under the car. I used a $20 zip saw to cut the Driver Side underbody panel after it was removed and Passenger exhaust deflector in place. Cutting-edge instruction diagram could be improved a bit. It appeared as an optical illusion to me.

Every time I walk behind the Highlander I think dang, that’s a good looking hitch! Following your instruction videos made for a very easy installation. I chose that particular hitch because it didn’t stick out beyond the bumper. It’s perfectly centered and pulls trailers well!

Perfect! If my next vehicle comes without a hitch Ill be contacting etrailer!

I received the hitch on time and no damage to the box and no scratches on the hitch. The directions were easy to follow and had the hitch installed in about 1.5 hours, I didn't have to jack up my vehicle (2016 Toyota Highlander), the hitch was light enough that I was able to lay it on my lap and start a bold on each side then work my way back installing the remaining 4 bolts. I torqued the bolts to specifications as stated in the directions then installed the wiring harness, that only took 15 min start to finish. I towed a 5' x 8' [rental] trailer with furniture on a 8 hour trip with no issues. Buying the hitch was cheaper that renting a truck to move my daughter into an apartment for her Junior year of college. Thanks again for a great product at a great price.

A really great product, towed a trailer 5 times since I installed the hitch, very pleased with my purchase!

Great product as advertised. The video for installation was relatively simple to follow for our 2018 Highlander. Just make sure you don't have it upside down as the holes won't align ;). Thanks etrailer! We will be turning to you for our next automotive accessory needs!

Still great with no issues! Have hauled a boat on several long trips and no complaints.

The curt hitch for 2016 Highlander does not include the piece to lower the muffler. I realize this is a Curt manufacturing component issue. Disappointed. I must assume their hitch will still fit or I will have to return to etrailer.

Comments
You mentioned that the hitch did not have the piece to lower the muffler. I would like to help however I am not quite sure what part you mean. Would you be able to explain in more detail? Was there hardware missing?
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 03/07/2022

Comments
I found the [online] video for the Curt hitch and it did not require the lowering of the muffler as did the Drawtite hitch. Just finished installing by myself on the driveway. Went in fine and the paper instructions were only if value for the pattern to cut the plastic undercarriage covers but [online] videos from [online] for this specific hitch was the best.
-- comment by: Eric - 03/07/2022

Comments
I researched and found that for this hitch you do not need to lower the muffler to install the hitch. The hitch is installed over the muffler. I recommend watching the video install that we have on a 2016 Toyota Highlander. At mark 5:06 you can see how we installed it over the muffler.

Outstanding Value! I installed in about 2 hours by myself and didn't lower the spare tire. The installation video was very helpful. But, there are a few items in the video that need updating/clarification. At 4:46, the bracket doesn't get re-installed. That's even mentioned at 7:39 in the video. As well, at 5:00 the muffler bracket doesn't need to be removed and you can see that it wasn't removed at 7:04 in the video. Nothing was mentioned about cutting the plastic muffler shield, which is seen cut at 7:02. I was able to just push it out of the way with the hitch. So, I didn't cut it off like the written instructions stated. And for trimming the driver's side panel at 7:55, I trimmed a lot less, see my photos. Lastly, be sure and adjust the hitch side to side before tightening the bolts to ensure it's centered. I highly recommend etrailer and am very happy with my purchase!

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver was easy to install and looks great. I had never installed a hitch before and it went really quick and was straightforward. I looked at the other hitch options available and felt this hitch did the best job of blending in with the vehicle, as if it had been there sense day one.

A very solid hitch. Installation was fairly straight forward. Watching the online video for installation was very helpful. The only deviation from the video, was I removed the bracket holding the muffler, to make it easier to get to the 3 bolts on that side. Then reinstall the muffler bracket. (See photo). This is my third hitch from etrailer, and as always, am very satisfied.

I had to modify the instructions slightly. My vehicle is a 2015 Highlander, XLE. Installation was not difficult. Most of the time was spended on trimming the drivers side underbody panel to my liking. Passenger side trim don't have to be remove. On the metal facial tab, only remove the existing m12 bolt. I removed the bolts holding the muffler to give me easier access because this was a one man installation. Follow the rest of the information. Shipping was done fast and the vendor was always helpful providing information.

Comments
I also have a 2015 XLE. Did you have it on a rack or did you crawl underneath?Did you need to use torque wrenches or were good standard socket wrenches okay?Did all the attachment bolts come with the kit?

Excellent! The Trailer hitch receiver and the other things I ordered arrived quickly. Inside that same box came a few additional items I ordered. Great product and great customer service from etrailer! I've been putting off getting a hitch receiver for a while and the time had come to stop borrowing friends trucks to haul things around. I did some research and after watching the install video online, I decided there was no reason to pay someone to do this install. As expected, it was relatively easy (especially when someone else helps hold the hitch up while you start the bolts). The receive does stick down below the bumper slightly (as accurately shown in their product gallery) but not as bad as some of the other models out there. Based on the combination of price and visual appeal, you can't go wrong with the Curt receiver. I also bought the wiring kit from etrailer and installation was a breeze! One note to future customers watch the etrailer install videos. They are extremely thorough and will make the installation of whatever you decide to buy much easier!

2014 Toyota Highlander

I installed the trailer hitch and wiring kit to our 2014 Toyota Highlander. Since I am 69 my wife insisted that my son help. I did the "prep work" getting the car up on improvised "ramps" (2x12 and a 4x4) under each rear wheel. I (my son) had no problems installing the hitch. Taking off the Toyota trim parts was "interesting", the panel under the drivers side of the car had 3 different types of fasteners, but that is a Toyota issue. As for the wiring kit I did that myself. One question I had was, why 3 fuses of different physical sizes when only 2 are required. The suggestion I have is on the wiring kit, the fuse holder that is attached to the module should have longer wires (maybe 9-12inches) so it could be routed to a place where replacement would not involve taking off 2 awkward to remove panels. Also the ground wire if about 2 inches longer it would reach to a convenient grounding place. And lastly the module is supposed to be attached to a "flat surface" inside the car, there are no flat surfaces, so I used the extra zip ties to hold the module to the cars wiring harness so it doesn't flop around.

I bought the Hitch, Cargo Carrier, and Bag one year ago, and total cost was less than one airline ticket. We just traveled with 4 adults and 2 car seats to Silver Dollar City and had plenty of room in the car. The quality and ease of use is terrific. I hang the carrier in the garage and one person can load it easily onto the hitch. The waterproof bag allows loose items to be packed easily. Go for it, you won’t be disappointed!

2018 Toyota Highlander

Super easy install of the C13200 on my 2018 Highlander Limited. I reviewed the videos for installing hitch and harness. They were well done and missed nothing. I set the hitch on an overturned 5 gallon bucket and was able to easily start the bolts on each side without a second set of hands. I marked and cut the panels with a fresh blade in a utility knife. The plastic panels are just soft enough. I did not have to take the spare down but I do see where you would need to tilt it when raising and lowering it into place. One suggestion for the folks at e-trailer: put your decals on straight if you'd like me to advertise for you. Mine was slapped on crooked and creased so I took it off. You do a great job on everything else! This was the second time I've bought a hitch from you and am completely happy with your products and service. Oh, and wiring harness was a cinch, too!

2014 Toyota Highlander

Attaching this hitch to my 2014 Toyota Highlander LE Plus was pretty straight forward. It is much easier to have a second set of hands. I attached the hitch by myself. I had a couple of stands to help me. I was fortunate because I have access to a car lift which made the installation very convenient. The only issue I had with the installation instructions was the section where they tell you to trim the driver side panel. The instructions tell you to trim off way more than you need to. The only cutting that needs to be done is a 1” wide cut from the back of the panel to around 2” past the existing hole in the panel (See photo). For placement of the cut compare the panel to the hitch bracket. As for function… I have not attached anything to the receiver yet.

The Curt description includes a notice that it won't accommodate a full-size spare on an aluminum rim. Believe that. I'd seen a mention somewhere in the comments that you can tip a full-size spare into place. Seemed only one way to test that theory, so I bolted the hitch on. The full-size spare wouldn't mount back in place. Fortunately I still had the compact spare and was able to swap it in. So, not ideal in terms of the spare, but we're in business with the hitch. Looking at the comparison between the Curt and the DrawTite (which I discovered after installing the Curt) it looks like the DrawTite might accommodate a full-size spare. The trade-off being that the DrawTite projects out from the bumper a bit more. The Curt is a rugged piece of goods. Installation was straightforward using the etrailer video. The plastic cowling under the driver's side on a Highlander is a little fussy, but it went back on OK. I Installed it alone, using my spare to prop it in place (photo). I finished it off with the Curt wiring harness (C56217). etrailer service was great. Only reason for four stars is the issue with the spare (which you might argue is my own damn fault).

Ask the Experts about this CURT Trailer Hitch

  • Why Can a Class I Hitch Only Carry Up to Two Bikes
When you carry more than two bikes it becomes more an issue of leverage of the weight than it does overall weight. That third bike may not weigh much, but since that additional weight will be at such a far distance from the hitch pin hole that weight will apply a lot of leveraged torque on the Class I hitch that can not handle the force and could potentially damage hitch/frame of your vehicle.
