Smart Fortwo

This hitch took 2 of us about 2 1/2 hours to put on the car. Hitch is very well designed and looks great on our smartcar for two. I bought a motorcycle cargo trailer to pull behind our car ( cause the smartcar has very little cargo room). this is the reason I bought the hitch. I will keep you people in mind if I ever have to buy a hitch for another car. By the way the price was very reasonable. Thank you for having such a wonderful product

Curt hitch worked out well on our 2014 Smart ForTwo. A bit difficult to install but the etrailer video helped immensely. Needed a deep socket to tighten the supplied nuts. A deep 17mm worked just fine. Also, a 9/16 socket worked better than a 14mm on the two Smart factor "star" bolts. The "fish wire" worked beautifully.
Most difficult part was fitting the hitch into place up over the muffler.
We will only using the hitch for a bike carrier rack.

Works great! Looks like it hangs very low yet it has never scraped on anything.

by:

Shipped quickly, price was good, and seems to be decent quality. Packaging was rough, but probably not the last hit that a low trailer hitch under a small car will receive. Would like a provision to mount a trailer light plug, but I can install that myself.

by:

Quality product. Was shipped with care and didn’t take a lifetime to deliver. I would definitely recommend the product and would happily do business with etrailer.com for any future part needs.

by:

Got the hitch in a timely manner. Good looking well made hitch.
Installing it took more time than stated.
The main thing is make sure you have an impact wrench to remove the bolts. Otherwise I don't see how you can get them out. I split a 14mm 3/8 drive socket trying to get them out by hand.
Otherwise if you follow the video everything goes smoothly. A little problem getting the hitch past the muffler. After the first time went better. Helps to have a flat pry bar to ease it past the brackets.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs a tow bar for a Smart car.

This is my second purchase from etrailer. Their service is impeccable! Both orders I have placed have arrived faster than anticipated. Their pricing is the best I have been able to find on both the internet and locally. The products are exactly as described and very good quality! Most recent purchase is this trailer hitch for Nugget (our Smart car). Fit perfect and easy to install using instructions provided.

Attaching a picture.

Thanks etrailer

2013 Smart Fortwo

Overall product quality is great, overall customer service from etrailer was great. The video and install instructions they provided on the website for the install was extremely helpful. Instructions listed install time as 40 minutes for professional install, 90 minutes for novice. After watching the online video I had the install done in 45 minutes and I am no way a professional service installer. I would definitely use Etrailer again for my hitch needs. Would have given a 5 star rating but the condition of the box when the hitch arrived via UPS was a little disappointing which in turn caused a corner of the hitch frame to have all the paint rubbed off to bare metal that needed to be painted prior to installing. This is not the fault of etrailer but Curt hitches for not properly packing their items for delivery via UPS, FedEx, etc... You can see in the picture where the corner of the shipping box was torn off allowing the hitch assembly to drag on everything the bottom of the box touched.

The hitch is great, paint is still intact no rust. Hitch used solely for a bike rack as a car this small cant tow much weight.

We were so pleased to find this hitch at a great price on etrailer. Our welder installed it today and it is perfect. Frank said it was pretty easy to install except he wished there had been another threader for pulling the screws through. He said you really can’t use them twice. Our car, a 2013 Smart Fortwo, is our toad for our motorhome. The purpose for the hitch is to pull our gray water tank to a dump site at campgrounds.
I ordered the hitch on a Friday, it arrived at our very remote house on Tuesday. Very quick service.
Thank you, etrailer.

2012 Smart fortwo

Worked great, a bit of a project to mount it in such a confined space. You want to be handy and have a good selection of sockets, extensions, jack stands and various hand tools. Now that it's mounted it works great. We use it to pull a 1,800 lb dragster in the pits and on the return road.

This hitch still looks like new, no issues

This hitch has come in handy been on my car for a year I towed a small aluminum trailer to Florida and back and I've used it for my road side treasures and even helped moved some of my family which is a lot for a smart car to do but it did it with no problem ...this hitch was easy to install took a little longer to do than we planned on but we found that taking the plastic body parts off was better than drilling out wholes. Once you get the back parts off you can put the mounting bolts and nut one easily, have a friend help you

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

I installed their tow hitches on my 2017 Subaru Outback and my 2009 Smart ForTwo. Both are used to tow my boat. They installed "without a hitch"! (pardon the pun). From mounting to electrical, they were a snap to install. While personal installation may not be for every homeowner (some chassis holes need to be enlarged which require certain tools), even a little mechanical knowledge will suffice. The videos were absolutely the best in showing how, what and where. It has now been a year and there is zero rust which was a concern after having experience years ago with another product (from a local trailer rental retailer) installed on my 1993 Chevy Venture van.

2013 Smart ForTwo

The aftermarket 2013 Smart Car For Two hitch receiver from etrailer installed super easy after navigating it around the muffler and exhaust system. The only problem I had was the USA flag receiver cover from etrailer fell off somewhere between Ft Myers FL and Lynchburg VA; suspect I 95 in SC or one of the many poor bridge plate pavement transitions. The mounted cover hung very low and I should have realized it might not survive the trip.

by:

Very well built hitch. Instructions were easy to follow and it fit perfectly. Took a bit over an hour to install. Fast shipping from etrailer and good follow up. Been using the hitch for a year with no problems

by:
2008 Smart fortwo

My ordering and receiving the hitch was very smooth and came quicker than i expected. The actual hitch and hardware were great quality. I did watch the video for installation and only had one problem. That was the two long 14 mm bolts on the car. They were really hard to get out. But once I got them out the rest went very smooth. It looks great and lets me attach a bike rack.

by:
2013 Smart Fortwo

The leaflet said 45 minutes for Pro, 90 minutes for Novice. I consider myself fairly handy and it took me 4 hours. Now on etrailer's favor the actual job of attaching, drilling, bolting, etc., is under 1 hour. It took me most of the other 3 hours to figure out how to disassemble the car's back and put it back together. Great product, all parts need were there, it looks sturdy. I'm happy with it. Remember that for the "ice" version of the 2013 Smart you need to remove the metal bumper support. 3 screws on each side, Torx.

by:

I couldn't believe the friendly AND extremely fast FREE delivery. etrailer is definitely in my approved contacts list.

I haven't had a chance to install my trailer hitch yet but the shipping was very fast - only a couple of days - and the installation videos are thorough and good. I'm looking forward to getting this thing on my car when the weather warms up a bit.

Received the hitch in a timely manner. Had it installed, so can't speak of that process. Did have to file the lip on the inside to get the bike rack tongue to fit…all in all, pleased with the hitch

I had my mechanic install. He was a beginner at it but said it took him about 1.5hours. He felt the directions were adequate. I am pleased to have a hitch receiver for my smart car.

Have not installed yet. But after opening and Inspected, was impressed that etrailer included the 1/2 fish wire to install bolts. Was not aware that would be included.

  • Trailer Hitch And Wiring For A 2009 Smart fortwo
Hi Cheri, The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11020 is the only fit we currently have and is incompatible with Brabus models so you'll want to determine your model before purchasing anything. If you find you don't have a Brabus model then you can install the hitch and a 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector w/ 72" Harness # 18252 in order to transfer your light signals through to the kayak trailer.

  • Can 2" Receiver Adapter Be Added to 1-1/4" Hitch on a 2008 Smart fortwo
To convert the 1-1/4" receiver opening on the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11020 for your 2008 Smart fortwo to a 2" receiver you can use the Trailer Hitch Adapter # e93YR. With that being said, any adapter will reduce the weight rating of your hitch by 50% so if you were to use this it would reduce the tongue weight of the hitch to 100 lbs. Not only that, but since your Smart car has a really short wheelbase the further back you place weight the more impact it will have to the performance...

You are correct that the Curt Trailer Hitch Support Strap part # 18050 will be required for all non-towing applications in order to honor the warranty of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11020 on your 2014 Smart Fortwo. As far as installation goes, this will really depend on the bike rack and vehicle it is used on. There is not a specific point on the rack or vehicle that the strap will need to be attached to but I recommend wrapping the strap around the center section of the platform...

  • Can a Gen-Y Ball Mount be Used to Carry a Cargo Carrier While Flat Towing
Actually, a Gen-Y ball mount, like part # 325-GH-314, is a great solution to level your flat tow setup for the Smart car and carry the cargo carrier. In addition to that, the tongue weight won't be a problem because there's virtually no tongue weight when flat towing. So you just need to worry about the cargo carrier and the cargo that's on it. If you need a reducer you can use the Brophy, part # HT02. Another option, that may not be as good but it's worth mentioning, is adding a hitch...
