Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Breakaway Kit - Kit Only - 34-285 Review

Today we're going to review part number 34-285. This is the Dexter breakaway kit. This breakaway kit is designed to bring trailers safely to the stop by activating the brakes should the trailer be disconnected while you're driving. This type of safety system is required in most states on trailers that are rated over 3000 pounds. This particular breakaway kit is designed to be used with the Dexter electric over hydraulic brake actuators, part number K71-650 or K71-651. Both of those we do sell separately on our website. This breakaway kit has a 9 amp hour capacity.

It comes with everything shown here. Comes with the battery charger, comes with the sealed 12-volt rechargeable battery, has this nice lockable weather resistant battery box, see where the battery goes in there. Comes with the breakaway switch and the cable. This box can be mounted on the trailer jack or your trailer frame. This kit is designed to work with single and tandem axle trailers with electric brakes and this kit does Department of Transportation specifications. Basically once your box is mounted, your battery would drop right into there and your wires would come out the side here.

Basically when you go to wire this up, now this part right here when you hook it up will help recharge the battery. Basically when you hook this up the black wire goes to your 12-volt power from the trailer vehicle harness. The white wire right here, this attached to the negative post of the battery, this would go to the trailer ground harness and then this black or this orange wire with the black stripe will attach to the orange wire with the black stripe wire coming out of the breakaway switch and the remaining wire, which is the blue wire from the breakaway switch, that'll go to your trailer electric brake feed. Once this is all attached and bolted down, basically this would be attached on to your trailer, you'd run this length of cable, this would actually insert into there and you push it all the way in, it takes about 20 pounds of pressure to pull this out. This part of the cable would attach to your vehicle so basically what happens is if you get into a situation where your safety chains don't work, the trailer breaks away, it would pull this out of here and that would make the brakes activate and stop the trailer from a runaway situation. That should do it for the review of part number 34-285. This is the Dexter breakaway kit.

I have never been so happy with the Dexter Product that I have installed. I have told everyone. Thank you so much. Your concern for me as a customer is second to none. Thank you at Dexter for the great design and ease of installing. I own a 4 axel boat trailer with Dexter Elec over Hyd Disc on all 4 wheels. Thank you and hope we all have a safe summer. 633766

I used this unit to pair with the Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, as it directly called for a 9mAh backup. This unit works as advertised, and the switch and wiring were easily identified and match the directions that come with the Dexter unit. The only reason I give this unit 4 stars instead of 5 is that it doesn't come with a battery charge indicator, which nearly every other 5mAh unit does. It would be really nice to be able to check the charge of the battery, without having to activate the emergency pull. Just a personal preference, but seems like a missing feature since all the 5mAh options have it. 617911

  • Trailer Breakaway Kit Recommendation with 9 amp Hour Battery
  • We don't have a 9 amp hour battery to swap into the battery box of the Engager but I do have a great solution for you. The Dexter Breakaway Kit part # 34-285 is a kit that comes with a 9 amp hour batter and a box large enough to fit the battery size.

  • The GM ITBC (integrated trailer brake controller) in your 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500 is indeed compatible with the Dexter # K71-651 Electric Over Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator. You'll also need a break away kit with a minimum 9 amp/hr battery, like part # 34-285.

You'll also need an electric over hydraulic brake actuator, a brake line kit, a break away system and a brake controller that's compatible with electric over hydraulic brake systems. For the electric over hydraulic actuator, I'd recommend going with the Hydrastar # HBA16. Our install techs have found...

To install part # K71-650, you must use at least a 9 amp/hour breakaway kit, like Dexter Breakaway Kit, part # 34-285. • Troubleshooting EOH Actuator That Will Not Release Brakes
  • If your EOH brakes will not disengage the problem could either be mechanical, as in a malfunction with the master cylinder, a clog in the hydraulic lines or broken parts in the brake assemblies themselves. Troubleshooting this type of problem is easiest if you disconnect the trailer and test the tow vehicle and trailer separately. If the brakes release when you unplug the...

  • Troubleshooting a Trailer Brake Actuator
  • The Dexter E/H 1000 you referenced like # K71-650 could certainly be worn out. 10 years is a good lifespan. I would check the fluid levels and ensure there isn't any cut or frayed wires. Also, you will want to ensure the 12 volt battery the actuator is attached to should be fully charged. A depleted trailer battery could cause the unit to stop working. And lastly, there could be an internal short within the actuator. These reasons could be the cause of the intermittent working and not working. If...

  • Your Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator # K71-651 will need your breakaway battery to be fully charged to operate as you've figured out I'm sure. It sounds like the problem is that your 12 volt power circuit on your 7-way is no longer functioning and its not charging the battery so its dying. Most likely there is a blown fuse on your 12 volt trailer circuit and because of that the breakaway battery is dead and your electric over hydraulic actuator is no longer working. The amperage...

That would explain why it works on your horse trailer with electric brakes.
