Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Maintenance

With standard electric brake assemblies, you need to manually adjust them every now and then to make sure you're getting the shortest stopping distance every time you tow.

A trailer drum brake with a red callout shows the location of a tension cable and pulley on a self-adjusting trailer brake.

With self-adjusting brakes, though, you'll always have peak stopping power - simple as that! As the brake pads wear over time, a tensioning cable will automatically keep the pads in alignment so they'll consistently make contact with your drum when you brake. You won't have to do tedious manual adjustments anymore.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

Dexter invests a lot of resources to ensure that these brakes meet the requirements for certification set by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Basically, a CSA certification tells you that these trailer brakes are well built and safe for use on the road.

How to Break In New Brakes

Once you get these brakes installed, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

  • Recommended Self Adjusting Brakes for Al-Ko 4,400 lb Axles
Michael, so you are correct you do have 4,400 lb axles so you can use the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes # K23-478-479 for replacements. These are self adjusting so you never need to manually adjust them, works with 14", 14 1/2", and 15" wheels, and includes both the left and right hand side. For hubs we have had customers in the past use # 8-201-5UC3, but you'll want to check your existing bearings and verify that they will work with this hub.

  • How to Pick Out Brakes for 3,500 lb Boat Trailer with Tandem Axles
Installing brakes on a trailer really isn't too bad. The install is pretty basic and a DIYer like yourself wouldn't have a problem at all. To determine the parts you need though we need to for sure know what axles/spindles you have so that we pick out the right parts. I attached a couple guides for that down below for you to check out. There are a lot of boat trailers that have great results with electric drum brakes so if that's a route you are interested in that's what I would recommend...

According to the Grand Design parts site you have 35" axle spacing so this is the right kit. They also show you have 2-1/4" shackle straps so you need the MORryde Suspension Upgrade Kit for Tandem Axle Trailers # MR46ZR. Hello Don, thanks for reaching out. The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes # K23-478-479 may work for you, but I would need you to measure your brake flange to verify. The # K23-478-479 brakes use a 4-bolt pattern, and I have included a diagram below with the dimensions. Some of the AL-KO axles use a different bolt pattern for the brake flange. If this does not match your brake flange I am afraid you will be out of luck for the brakes. AL-KO was bought out by Dexter, and they...

RV manufacturers just are not that specific with their online literature. It will still be pretty easy to figure out though.
