Replacement Brake Assemblies for AL KO 4,400 lb Trailer Axle

Updated 01/13/2025 | Published 01/04/2025

Question:

Hello, I have a 2006 Keystone cougar fifth wheel model 289EFS. It has 12“ x 2“ electric brake assemblies that I would like to replace. The backing plate on the brakes is T-52 AL-KO and the axles are also AL-KO rated at 4400 pounds. I am the original owner and the axles are original to the unit. I have heard that the AL-KO 4400 pound axles have been discontinued with no brake replacements. Is this the case or would I be able to purchase replacement brake assemblies? If so, which ones would I need? I can also provide pictures if needed. Thanks.

Hey Cesar, for 4,400 AL KO trailer axles the correct replacement brake assemblies are part # K23-478-479. We've confirmed these fit the AL KO axles several times over the years.

Hi Jameson, good evening.. Thank you for responding to my inquiry, I do appreciate it. However, the brakes that you recommend are 10 inch brake assemblies. My unit contains 12” x 2“ break shoes. Please advise the correct replacement brake assemblies. Preferably self adjusting if available. Thanks, Cesar.

@Cesar Sorry about that! Then instead you'd need the part # AKEBRK-7-SA which fits the 5,200 lb AL KO 12 inch hub drums like you have.

@JamesonC Hi Jameson. I appreciate your feedback and recommendations. I am trying to understand my AL-KO brake situation. Many post that I have read state that the brake assemblies are no longer available since AL-KO was acquired by Dexter. However, the post all reference brake assemblies on the T-44 axle 4400 LBS. Is the T-52 axle rated at 4400 LBS a different situation in which parts are still available? Will your recommendation still work with my situation? part # AKEBRK-7-SA The axle tag reads the following: T-52 4400 LBS AL-KO KOBER The brake backing plate reads the following: 0306 656 PRI-GG SEC-GG 12x2 ELEC AL-KO I can provide pictures if needed. Thanks so much for your help, I do appreciate it. Thanks, Cesar.

@Cesar The AL KO brake components can be hard to nail down as we have found. We do know that you need 12 inch by 2 inch brake assemblies but there's one thing you will want to check. Are your current assemblies held on with 4 bolts or 5 bolts? If 5 bolts the part # AKEBRK-7-SA I mentioned will work. If it's a 4 bolt pattern though instead you'd need to go with the part # 23-106-09 and # 23-105-09 for each side of the trailer. I should have honestly thought to mention this earlier so thank you for your patience with this. Let me know what you find out though as hopefully we can get this for sure straightened out for the future as well.
