Power and Sensitivity Adjustment

Once the brake controller is installed, you can use the knob on the right side of the unit to adjust the gain (also known as output). Gain lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. You want to set it as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Typically, this setting is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa.


Tekonsha Voyager

You can fine-tune the gain by adjusting the sensitivity of the internal sensor using the knob on the left side. This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking level. You can adjust this when you're towing heavy loads and you need more umph to bring your trailer to a stop. Your tow vehicle doesn't need that much power to brake in time, but your heavy trailer does. A high sensitivity level will get the braking power to your trailer brakes faster and with more intensity so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle forward.


LED Indicator

Keeping with its simple design, the Voyager will not overwhelm you with information. An LED indicator on the top of the unit lights up green to show that your trailer is securely connected to your tow vehicle. The LED indicator will change to red when the brakes on your trailer are activated.


During installation and setup, this light is also used to ensure that the Voyager will be able to function correctly. Proper leveling of the internal sensor is crucial to the operation of this brake controller. When the sensor is level, the LED will change to a shade of orange.


Simple Installation

The Voyager is designed to be mounted in your cab at a vertical angle that is between -20 degrees and 70 degrees. The brake controller needs to be horizontally level and parallel to the direction of travel in order to function properly.

To connect the Voyager, just plug the included harness into your vehicle. The other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.


Once the controller is mounted and connected, you must level the internal sensor. First, set the overall power to the maximum using the knob on the side of the controller. Then, while pressing the tow vehicle's brake pedal, adjust the level knob on the other side of the brake controller (this is the same knob that is used to fine-tune the power output) until the LED monitor is a shade of orange.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Tekonsha Voyager brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.


The Voyager uses a pendulum system to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Video Transcript for 2021 Ford Bronco Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller: Complete Installation

Today we have a 2021 Ford Bronco and we're enabling it to do a little bit more. We're gonna be taking a look at the Tekonsha Voyager, electronic brake controller. If you're looking to, just take care of some of the lighter trailers and you just wanna bare bones, trailer brake controller. This is gonna be the one for you just because there's nothing to it really. We have one light on top. We have a little over ride switch right there, and there's gonna be a dial on the left side that is going to adjust the intensity of the brakes.

So, definitely take your trailer out to a parking lot and dial that in. One thing with this one being bare bones is, we are not gonna have a screen and we're also not gonna have any digits or anything, it's just gonna be the knob. So, you kind of have to figure out exactly where the knob is for your specific trailer. So, this is a proportionate breaking system. So, what that means is, if I slam on the brakes, it's gonna slam on the brakes in the back.

If I gently get on the brakes and traffic or something, the trailer's gonna slowly slow down as well. So, it matches what your foot does. So, that's cool. One thing that this thing also is missing is boosts. So, if you do want all the goodies, we do have the Primus IQ, which is good, 'cause it's got a screen for the digits and this button up top controls the boosts.

And then of course, so this is just the intensity but if you really wanted my opinion, I like the Prodigy P3 because it's got a big screen and it has buttons instead of a dial, which I like, it also looks a little bit nicer, more high end and you can change the LEDs. So, this is my pick, but this one is gonna do everything this one will, it's just gonna be a little bit fancier. And with this one right here, we're not gonna get that boost setting. But at the end of the day, it's gonna make your trailer slow down and it's gonna preserve your brakes on your vehicle, and that's kind of what I'm going for. So, when you don't have a trailer connected there's not gonna be any lights.

So, if you don't see a light and your trailer's connected, something's wrong, but when we plug the trailer in, the light's gonna come on. Just to let you know that everything's all nice and connected. Since we don't have a screen with numbers on it, I think the best thing to do is like, if we have a trailer and this is the best setting, maybe make a notch somewhere. I do like how it has a bigger wheel, so you're not sitting there spinning it a bunch of times. It only goes all the way and then cranked all the way this way. So, I think it'll be easy to kind of label this if we are trading trailers every once in a while. There are two different ways we can hook this up. It all depends on what comes with your Bronco. If you have the factory tow package, all you're gonna need which is all included with this kit is the brake controller but also a cable that's gonna convert our factory harness to our brake controller harness. And that's all included with this kit. If you don't have a tow package on your Bronco, we do have a wiring kit for you that you're gonna need to grab separately so you can install all this. First we wanna find all our wiring. So, you just go underneath the steering wheel, closer to the center console and just reach up there and it's gonna be stuck to a little bracket. So, once you get it down, this is what you're pulling off. And then at first I was like. "Okay, this doesn't work, this doesn't work" Well, this is a dummy plug. You just push this in and pull that out. Here's the harness that you need for your factory tow package. We can line it up, click it in. On the dummy plug, what you can do is you can kinda pry this back a little bit, slide this out, and then you can put this on the wiring that we just plugged in 'cause that'll give it a nice little spot to put it in there, to keep the wires out of the way. They do include a bracket with some mounting hardware. We're gonna have some self tappers and then some screws to go into the brake controller. I kind of just want it to be on the right side. Kinda below my engine starts stop. So, it's not gonna hit my knee, but it's also accessible and within arms reach. So, take your self tappers, find the best spot, make sure there's nothing behind there that's important. Then we can go ahead and mount this up. Once we tighten down all the hardware and mount up the brake controller, which everything does come with the kit, we can plug it in and hopefully we see lights. It's only gonna go in there one way. All right Let me get this, tuck it all the way back up in here. It's a decent amount of wiring. So, you can find a spot pretty easily, back behind this dash. So we know we have power running to it but we wanna make sure it's talking to the seven way. So we have this fancy little test box, and when I do the manual override it should give us some lights, which it is. So we know that power's going to our trailer. What you wanna do is just hook up your trailer. Maybe just go in a parking lot or something and override it. And if the brakes start to engage, you know that everything's talking correctly and you're good.     Actually that is a possibility. Proportional brake controllers will not engage the brakes with the pedal unless the tow vehicle is in motion. Another possibility is the red wire from the brake controller isn't connected correctly. It needs to be connected to the cold side of the stop light switch or the wire that is hot only when the brake pedal is pressed.
