Easy-to-Access Brake Controller

Tekonsha POD Controls and Components

The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.

Braking Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.


Manual Override

The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.


Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.


The included custom adapter plugs into the electric junction box beneath your vehicle's dash. This black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row. Once you have the wiring connected to your vehicle, just plug the other end into the POD. Because there are no wires to splice, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove the brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Video Transcript for Set up: Tekonsha POD Trailer Brake Controller on a 2011 Ford F-150

Today on a 2011 Ford F150, we're going to review an install. The Tekonsha Power Trek Electric Brake Controller, part number 39523. We'll be doing this in conjunction with the Tekonsha Direct Fit Wiring Harness, part number 22292. Here, on the right side of the brake controller, is the film wheel that allows you to change the gain. The gain is the maximum tensity in which power will be applied to our trailer braking. On the left side is the hand sweep, or thumb wheel, that allows you to manually apply trailer braking to the rear of the vehicle. Now, with our trailer not connected, you can see the indicator light is off. Once we connect our trailer, you can see the green light comes on, indicating that the trailer has been connected.

As we press on the brake and power is being sent to the trailer, the green light changes to red. Now, to begin our install, we need to locate the manufacturers break controller port. It will be here, underneath the dash on the drivers side, right next to the manufacturers electrical scan tool port. See To the manufacturers wiring harness is the grey plug. We're going to go ahead and use our utility knife to cut the tape and pull it free. Now we have access to the manufacturers brake controller port.

We can bring it, the direct bit wiring harness. Now, as you can see, the connectors are the same size, and that's because this application has an adapter fitting. By pressing on the connector lock, we can remove that adapter fitting, and plug directly into the manufacturers brake controller port. Now once that connection is made, we'll go ahead and leave the new wiring harness set aside until we get our brake controller bracket mounted. To mount the brake controller bracket, we'll just use the self tapping screws that are provided with the install kit. For this application, we're able to mount it here, right at the bottom of the dash. This way, the driver has easy access to it when necessary.

Now with the brake controller bracket installed, we'll bring in out brake controller. From the back of the brake controller is the electrical pigtail that we'll plug directly into the direct fit wiring harness. Now, once we've made our connection, we'll go ahead and take the brake controller and mount it to the bracket. We use this applied hardware to secure it. Next, we'll go ahead and secure any excess wiring up behind the dash. Keep in mind, once you carry the access wiring to stay away from any moving of pawns such as the steering shaft, or maybe the gas and brake petal.

Now, to secure any access wiring, we're just going to use a simple zip tie and secure the wiring off to the manufacturers harness, and then cut off the excess from the zip tie. And just like that, our brake controller is installed and we're ready to hit the road. That's how you complete the install of the Tekonsha Power Trek Electric Brake Controller part number 39523 on a 2011 Ford F150.
