Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

Brake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the 6-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

2015 Chevrolet Traverse

Needed this to plug into the factory wiring on my 2015 Chevy Traverse LTZ. It is not equipped with a dash port for direct plug in, but Chevy does leave wiring with a factory plug end under the floor liner. Once I found that, this mated, and made hook up of the brake controller easy. No splicing or cutting necessary to install my brake control module.

Our new Tekonsha brake controller was super easy to install. We are new RVer's and are will use it today for the first time when we pick up our travel trailer from the dealer.
Looking forward to many safe miles because of that device.
We are telling everyone we meet about the great prices and service at etrailer.com
Thanks,

The Tekonsha Primus IQ was very easy to install with the GM wiring harness. I had everything installed in about 45 min. and it works great on my 2015 Chevy Traverse. etrailer.com had my order at my door within 3 days and offered free shipping. Can’t ask for much more than that.

2014 GMC Acadia

On Monday I ordered a Teknosha Prodigy P3 Proportional brake controller and interface cable from trailer.com. I received these items via UPS ON Wednesday ( I chose to pay for two day shipping because I'm picing up a new travel trailer on Saturday).
Today (Thursday) I installed the controller in my 2014 GMC Acadia. It was fully installed in les than 20 minutes. I will functionally check it this weekend. Etrailer.com responded quickly to my order and I received the items on time.

The plug matched the truck's wiring harness and works good. The instructions were very clear and easy to use.

Truly makes installing the brake controller a snap... two snaps actually.

2015 GMC Acadia

The wiring harness plugged into the 2015 GMC Acadia connector for my 7 wire electric brake controller. I had to drill a hole in an access panel under the steering column so that the harness could attached to the brake controller. Everything worked as anticipated. I did have to purchase a special upholstery tool kit from NAPA (plastic tools) to remove the connectors on the access panel. I would recommend this harness and the corresponding electric brake controller for any GMC vehicle that can pull a trailer that has electric brakes.

The brake controller has been working great! I have not had any problems. Setting the braking strength is easy when moving from a loaded trailer to an empty trailer. I would recommend this controller for all GM vehicles capable of pulling a trailer with electric brakes.

by:

Just what I needed to hook my new brake controller up and get ready for our camper. Couldn't be easier. Plug in to the Traverse's wiring harness, and plug the other end in to the brake controller. Perfect match!

The connection is as strong as it was when I instaled it.

Very easy to install. Haven't got a trailer to set yet, but from other reviews, looks like it will be easy.

2013 Chevrolet Traverse

I ordered item 3026-P to connect a 2013 Chevy Traverse with a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller. My Traverse has the factory installed Tow Package (V92), so the harness plug is already populated and ready to plug into the 3026-P.
The pre-wired harness fit perfectly to my 2013 Traverse. After hunting for the factory plug hidden under the dash, the harness installed easily and locked into place. There is plenty of slack to route where desired on either side of the steering column. I chose the left side for a more flush bracket install against the plastic under-dash cover. The harness installed perfectly into the Prodigy P2. The unit instantly powered up and appeared nominal in operation.
I look forward to using the combination of these 2 items to safely haul around a travel trailer in the near future, which is why I preinstalled these.
One thing to keep in mind is that there is live voltage on the black wire when the harness is mated to the vehicle plug, so if you install the harness but remove the Brake Controller (when not used or used between 2 vehicles), be sure to cover the open harness end with a rubber cap or electrical tape, to keep from shorting it to any ground point.
Great product, excellent pricing, and easy to find for my specific configuration!

by:

Great product and service. etrailer website and its videos were excellent in helping chose the right product set up and instillation. The Tekonsha Plug-in Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controller was just the ticket for my Chevy Traverse. Easy instillation and Works as advertised. Very happy and would buy from both Tekonsha and etrailer again without reservation.

2017 Chevrolet Traverse

Bought item from etrailer, although there seems to be some confusion as to it's use for a Prodigy P3 90195 Brake Controller install on a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse LT with Tow Package. I'll put it all to rest right now. Mine installed in mere minutes. Grey plug taped to wire harness running up against firewall right above the parking brake assembly. Matched and fit perfectly. Once I noticed the issues I tested the connectors in that plug to insure I had a ground, constant power supply and a power supply when the brake pedal was depressed and that is when I knew the others who had issues with the simple install I've described had much different setups then did I.

Chevrolet Traverse

I ordered the Tekonsha P-3 brake controller from etrailer because they would ship it with the correct cable assembly for my Chevy Traverse at a very good price. It came with good directions and installed easily and quickly. I've taken my trailer out one time now and the Tekonsha brake controller performed flawlessly. While this is a small sample size so far, I would highly rate etrailer and the Tekonsha brake controller.

by:
GMC Acadia

Got the Tekonsha P2 brake controller. Very simple to install since my Acadia had a tow package on it from the factory. Just plugged it in! Mounted with Velcro since I didn't want to drill into my nice new dashboard. (Requires frequent pressing to keep stuck - lol.) Can't tell you how the controller works because I ended up not buying the trailer I was looking at. :(
Zac at etrailer was extremely helpful and courteous. Would definitely recommend them and will buy from them again. They beat all my local prices and shipping was fast.
Thanks etrailer!

2014 GMC Acadia

I have used etrailer.com several times and I have found it very easy to order parts and receive these parts in a short period of time. This last order consisted of all the wiring harnesses controller and hitch for a 2014 Acadia. It also comes with very good installations papers. Only thing I wish it would have had extra with this order with the wiring harnesses need to have Dielectric grease to plug in to car to had had a small tube sent with those harnesses.

by:

Was wired wrong from the get go. The picture shows the wiring at the controller plug as: Black, Red, White, and Blue. The one I received had the Red and White wires reversed. The vehicle side plug was also wired wrong: 2 wires went to empty positions on the vehicle plug. After sorting it all out with the schematics that came with the controller, and MUCH frustration with the switched wires, I manage to get it working. The controller works great! Just give the wires a look over for proper sockets/wiring.

by:

Very quick delivery of quality parts. I'll be sure to use etrailer again if the need arises. The only problem I had was finding out how to remove the plastic panel below the steering wheel. There were three plastic plugs holding it in place, but sometimes plugs in other vehicles broke by just pulling them. In this case, there is a plastic washer that should be pried out about 1/4" with a screwdriver. Once it is pried out, you can grab the plug and pull down with your fingers. Really a great improvement by GM over older plugs.

2013 Buick Enclave

I received the Tekonsha P2 controller and the 2 - click, made-to-fit wiring harness for my 2013 Enclave. It did, in fact, fit perfectly and the controller is a HUGE step up fom my previous non-proportional controller. Installation was literally 10 minutes! (Including reading the very clear instructions). Customer service from Tamara W was exceptional. She confirmed the correct part numbers and answered all my questions. Good price, good product and great service. Reward them with your business !

I was very excited to find this product as I don't know much about vehicle wiring. At first, I was not sure if this item would work with the Brake Controller that I purchased but after contacting customer service, I found that it was exactly what I was looking for. The item itself is great as there is no connections that need to be made up, it is plug-and-play. The response I got from customer service also included images of exactly where I would find the corresponding connection and sure enough, it was right where they said it would be. Keep up the great work!

2015 Chevrolet Traverse

Perfect harness! Made set up on my new 2015 Chevy traverse with tow package so easy. Removed plastic cover under steering wheel found grey plug and plugged in Boom done. Mounted brake controller and set up took 20min tops.

2013 GMC Acadia

I'm a 65 year old woman, but was able to easily install the wiring harness, and Tekonsha Voyager trailer break controller on my 2013 GMC Acadia in an hour. Very satisfied with the harness and controller so far. Haven't leveled or set the breaking power yet. Ran out of daylight. Will do this tomorrow. But I don't foresee any problems.

2018 Chevrolet Traverse

Wrong connectors for my 2018 Traverse as it had pigtail leads under the door sill plate.

Etrailer Expert

Mike L.

9/27/2018

The 2018 Chevy Traverse is a split model year. There is a 2018 Traverse, which is the first year of the new generation vehicle, and theres a 2018 Traverse Limited, which is mechanically identical to the 2017 model. The Traverse Limited uses the # 3026-P wiring harness, but the 2018 model will not have the plug under the dash. There are blunt cut wires behind the kick panel to the left of the drivers left foot. The controller pigtail would wire directly to these wires as follows: Red/Blue striped tow package wire to black wire on controller. Black tow package wire to white wire on controller. White and blue striped tow package wire to red controller wire and blue tow package wire to the blue controller wire.

2015 GMC Acadia

Rather than trying to rewire my old harness to match the new truck, it was great to just order the right cable. Simple plug and go. works great. In use for over a year now.

  • Brake Controller Installation for 2018 Chevrolet Traverse
The procedure will depend on which Traverse model you have. 2018 Was a split model year for the Traverse, where they actually put out two models the Traverse and the Traverse Limited. The 2018 Traverse is the first model year of the new generation, while the 2018 Traverse Limited is the last model year of the old generation. The 2018 Traverse limited would be visually and mechanically identical to a 2017 model. If you have the Limited model, you'd use the # 3026-P connector, and plug it...
