Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Fast shipping
This is the 4th large
item I’ve purchased, first 3 went without a problem.
This one came just as fast, but the rubber protection was off the ends so there is surface rust and the lock clip was a little damaged, 2 studs for the backing plate were missing, nothing that could not be fixed or replaced. But this was probably the shipper.
Item to large to worry about shipping back.

To be honest I would say that this does happen time to time in shipping. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

by:

You guys rock…
I think Dexter or your
shipping team would secure the backing plate mounting studs before shipping.
I received my shipment with a few studs missing otherwise I would definitely recommend these replacement axles.

by:

Shipping time was great! The only problem was the bottom plate hole spacing for the U-Bolts was not wide enough for my springs. I used the old plates and all went together fine.

by:

Is very good

Product was great and came fast.

Product is working fine with the project we have going. Fast shipping too

by:

Great axle fit like a glove baby yea!!

by:

Great product!!!!!!!!!

by:

Works as promised. My only complaint is that one of the cages that holds the nut from backing off was lost in shipping, you could see that the axle had been dragged by one end. The spindle was not drilled for a cotter pin and I was in a hurry so ran to the local auto parts store and got a cage rather than even mentioning it.

by:

Tremendous service, product was exactly what I expected. Fast delivery.

by:

Great customer service and great delivery times. Even with the current shipping delays parts stock is good. We have been using etrailer.com for years for small trailer parts with no issues at all.

by:

Axel took 2 1/2 weeks to receive. When I received it was damaged broken grease fitting missing lock for nut. Missing 1 of 2 axel mount. Great price on axel.

by:

Great service. Thank you. Missing parts were shipped fast and I was able to get the trailer together and back on the road.

by:

working good

by:

Dexter axles always perform well.

This
is a replacement for an axle that was bent. Turned very tight in a parking lot, dragging the front axle side ways. The tire dropped in a pot hole and got wedged so hard it bent axle and broke U bolts.

The trailer had 4 years of hard daily use before that. I'm sure the replacement will work well for many years as well, as long as I don't tear it up.

by:

Just installed my axle but have not driven the trailer yet. I will say etrailers had great customer service and had my axle in less than a week.

by:

This product so far was easy to install, I really haven't used it just yet I was waiting for the rest of the parts I needed. I am giving a good review on this company because of their customer service. Every time I have order from here their delivery is very fast, and if there are any problems with it they are quick to respond and fix it.

by:

Great product and great service!

  • Solution for Needing Replacement Dexter Axle with Number 7658660 Part Number
I am pretty sure that the axle you are in need of is a 7k axle that has 95 inches from hub face to hub face and 80 inches from spring seat center to spring seat center which we do have a replacement for with the part # 8327834. I would recommend you confirm this by measuring or it would be mentioned on the same tag as where you found the number you mentioned. The hub face dimension might be listed as HF and the spring center as SC.

  • Where Would Tandem Axles Install in Place of Triple Axle Trailer Setup
To place tandem axles in place of a triple axle trailer will require you to position the center hanger for the tandem axles exactly where the center axle of the triple axle configuration. You can reuse the hangers and suspension you have now but it will require removing all of the hangers basically since everything will get shifted and some of the hangers won't get reused. Unless you are trying to reduce the cost of tire replacements I don't really see the benefit to lowering the capacity...

  • What is Spring Seat to Spring Seat Dimension of Dexter 7k Trailer Axle 8327834
The spring seat brackets on your trailer frame would need to be located at 80 inches on center for the Dexter 7k trailer axle part # 8327834 to fit. Otherwise if you were ordering a new axle the best choice would be to order one that has the same spring seat bracket dimensions as you have now so it would bolt right up.

  • Can Hub-Face Be Longer for Replacement Axle
The hub-face distance can be longer than your current axle, but you don't want it to be shorter otherwise you run the risk of the tire sidewalls making contact with your trailer frame. So if the 95" long hub-face for the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles # 8327834 you're looking at is a little wider than what you currently have but the spring-centers are the same then you'll be good to go to use this as a replacement.

  • Is Dexter Trailer Axle # 8327834 Same as 7256618
The trailer axle # 8327834 is nearly identical to the axle you have with the exception of the spring centers being off 1/2 of an inch. Other than that the capacity is the same at 7,000 lbs, the hub face to face dimension is 95 inches. So this would work for you but you'd want to have the spring seats moved 1/4 of an inch out on both sides and you'd be set.

You will want to measure your current axle to ensure fit. I have attached a diagram detailing the dimensions of the Dexter Axle Item # 8327834 you were looking at. • Kaufman Goosenecks Trailer Weight Ratings Questions
You're correct. The reason your axles like # 8327834 can be rated less than your trailer's GVWR is because generally about 15 to 20 percent of a gooseneck trailer's weight is on the truck. This is actually pretty common with trailers although not as much as it used to be. How much weight are your attempting to carry on your Kaufman Trailer? I will be glad to assist your with this process.

  • Replacement Recommendation for 7K Axle From Dexter Axle
To replace your 7K axle from Dexter Axle you need part # 8327834 for a simple axle with just the spindles or part # 8327834-EB which is the exact same thing but with an electric brake setup and an 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. I confirmed this with my contact at Dexter Axle. The spring center and hub face dimensions match what you have to this will be a pretty simple swap for the installation. Attached are installation videos of both axle systems for you to check out.

The only 7K axles we offer with straight spindles are the Dexter # 8327834 axle you'd looked at and the same axle with brake drums/hubs, part # 8327834-EB. These axles have a hub face to hub face distance of 95 inches and a spring seat center to center distance of 80 inches. These axles could be safely altered so they'd work for you. Using this axle would only move your wheels out by 1-1/2 inches on each side which will not present a problem. The spring center distance isn't a huge deal,...
