Westlake Radials

This radial ply tire from Westlake is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability.

Westlake Standard Tread Close-Up

The standard tread on this tire has solid, continuous ribs, and there are very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. This tire is designed for use on trailers, so it doesn't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Westlake Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - LHWL101 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Westlake ST175/80R13 radial trailer tire. This tire is made of high quality rubber, reinforced by layers of steel and polyester belts. Great for highway use, really nice tread design. This is going to maximize road contact and traction. It also features nylon overlay, to prevent tread separation, and it's going to have a tread wear indicator, makes it easier to see tread depth. It gives you that visual indicator of tread wear on your tire.

This special trailer tire design, couples the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. This is created specifically for trailers, so it's not intended for use on other vehicles, and it does meet Department of Transportation specifications. This is going to fit 13" x 4 1/2", 13" x 5", and 13" x 5 1/2" rims. Again, the tire size is ST175/80R13. It's going to give us a section width of 7", and then an outer diameter, when properly inflated, of 24". When it comes to the capacity, we're looking at a load range C, which gives it a 6 ply rating, and a maximum load is 1,360 pounds, at 50 PSI.

Now, this does have a speed rating on it, so if you look after the tire size, it's going to say speed rating, with the letter L, which gives it a speed rating of 75 miles per hour. That's going to do it for today's look at the Westlake ST175/80R13 radial trailer tire.

Me and my family went on a 5000 mile round trip vacation. We encountered a lot of different road conditions without a problem and the tires are still currently being used on the camper. The only hitch I had was a very long lead time from the time of ordering the tire and the delivery. Seems like it was a couple months which was frustrating when I was trying to prepare for this trip. As you can see from the picture Montana mud aint no joke. 610593

Had a blowout on the 2 year old original tires that came on Bullet 248rks so I decided to replace all 4 tires with the Westlake Super ST. Had them mounted by a mechanics at a Mercedes dealership. He was impressed by the quality of the tires and I shouldn’t have any problems with these tires. And they look great also. 667403

Made in China has a connotation of poor quality at best, most of the time junk. These Westlake tires are made in China however to the contrary they are top-quality. Don’t hesitate in using these as replacement! Plus buy them from etrailer.com, for first class service, call and asked for Chris W!! 549042

My last tires from etrailer lasted 3 years of daily use. Although I have yet to put many miles on these I expect excellent results. Lisa D. guided me through the selection process. This Westlake model is a better fit (205) than my previous tire (215) yet offeres the same 8-ply & D load rating. My local stores still think they don’t make radial trailer tires! I can’t recommend etrailer highly enough! 569338

15000 miles and no problems with "G" rated Westlakes. They were installed by the OEM when we purchased the 42', 16000lb, 5th Wheel. I have added TPMS and so far, no worries. The reason we ordered (2) new tires, we had a dual leaf spring failure and the tires didn't fail, but both rubbed on the frame and we are replacing them out of caution. I've owned China Bombs on previous 5th Wheels and like many, we suffered miserably the consequences of cheap tires. We started to go with Sailuns instead, but have had such great performance with these, we decided to stay brand loyal. RAH! 620215

e-trailer was great. The trailer tires I had ordered were on back order, and they took the time to call me to see if another product could be shipped, in case I was in a hurry. Was under no time constraints, so I stayed with my original order, but just having an employee take the initiative, that is client service. They should be promoted...…. like seeing that John 602637

When a nail punctured the sidewall of my trailer tire I found myself in need of a quick replacement. With no local business able to provide an exact replacement, a web search quickly yielded information about etrailer and their quality of service. After ordering, I had the tire in a very short time and I’m back on the road! Great support, and always kept informed that my order had been placed, shipped, and delivered. Can’t ask for much more than that. 510874

This is a great tire for my 8800# Travel Trailer. Kudos to the team at etrailer for letting me know that the tire was going to ship a few days late and offering substitute items. Seems like it's a quality tire. Only issue I have that gave me a slight reservation about quality/durability is the extremely obvious seam where the tread was mated end to end to itself during construction. I don't recall ever seeing this on a good quality tire before. 560662

Found a match for our existing trailer tires on the website and it was shipped out the next day. Had it at the house in just a few days. Also took advantage of a few other items to be eligible for the free shipping. Didn't know an anti-wobble receiver hitch device existed, I wish I would have found that years ago. • Bias vs Radial Tires for 2002 Viking 2470ST Pop-Up Camper
  • Since radial tires flex more than bias tires, they generally have better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. They also run cooler than bias tires do, especially when under a load, so radials tend to last longer. While bias ply tires can be useful for off-road applications like farm use, radials are generally preferable on the highway and for long trips. Given your usage, I'd suggest upgrading to a radial tire. I've attached a helpful article on trailer tires for your convenience....

This size is ST175/80R13. Or for a similar wheel that comes with a radial tire installed already we have the part # LHAX097 that would work great. The tire has a higher speed rating than usual at 75 mph and has a 2 year roadside program too. The tire I mentioned before has the same ratings and roadside program.

  • Selecting Trailer Tires to Avoid Blowouts During Freeway Driving
  • Trailer tire failure usually comes from heat, and excessive heat in a tire can arise from several potential causes. One is inflation; a tire that is under- or over-inflated will build up more internal heat. A second common cause is overloading the tire with more weight than it can handle. The third common cause for tire failure is operating the tire above its speed rating. This too will cause heat build up that can lead to premature failure. Special trailer (ST type) tires should...

  • Tire Recommendation for Jayco Qwest 12a ST175/80R13
  • In nearly every situation trailer tires get too old and begin to dry rot before they wear out from use. Normally replacing the trailer tires at 4-6 years is the correct time to replace them. If you can get me the size you have on your trailer tires now I will be more than happy to help you pick out the best replacement. I tried to see if that info was available online but could not locate it anywhere.

  • Trailer Tire Replacement for Size 165/80R13 on Boat Trailer
  • The tire size 165/80R13 isn't a standard trailer tire size so it's a good idea to get that off the rim. The size 175/80-13 is the closest trailer tire size to that and would work well. It fits rims that are between 4-1/2 inch and 5-1/2 inches wide. I'd go with the part # LHWL101 as it has a higher speed rating of 75 mph and comes with a 2 year roadside assistance program.

  • Replacement Trailer Tire for 1997 Shoreland'r Jet Ski Trailer
  • The closest tire size we have to what you listed is going to be the 175/80R13 that you mentioned. For just a tire in that size the part # LHWL101 would be your best option. It has a speed rating of 75 mph and has a 2-year roadside assistance program that is very appealing as well. I attached a review video for more info as well. The tire size should be close enough that your fender clearance would be fine, but worst case scenario you could take them off.

  • Difference Between Radial and Bias Ply Tires and Recommendation for Size ST175/80-13
  • The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler than a bias ply tire, especially...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size ST175/80R13
  • For the tire size of ST175/80R13 I really like the part # LHWL101 because it has a 75 mph speed rating and has a 2 year roadside program that comes with it. If your RV or trailer has a flat tire, call the help line and a technician will come change the flat for you. You can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year from anywhere in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico.

  • When is it Beneficial to Change Tire Load Range and Tire Size on Boat Trailer
  • Increasing trailer wheel/tire size is sometimes possible and can provide certain potential benefits, but a larger tire does not necessarily gain anything. If your concern is weight load capacity then you may simply need to change your tires only, to a higher Load Range rating in the same size, that can mount on your current wheels. The worst enemy of a trailer tire is heat. Heat arises from three main causes: overloading the tire beyond its weight capacity, incorrect inflation pressure...

  • Bias Ply or Radial Tire for 13 inch Trailer Wheel
  • Radials are basically superior to bias-ply tires in every way so whenever available we always recommend people go that route. The closest tire size we have to what you listed is the size ST175/80R13 like the part # LHWL101. This tire has a capacity of 1,360 lbs at 50 psi and has a speed rating of 75 mph.

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace 155/80-13
  • The tire size you have is not designed for use on a trailer as it's a passenger vehicle tire size. That's actually what the "P" in the tire size references. You want a tire size that starts with ST which means it's for a trailer application. The closest trailer tire size is the size ST185/80-13 which for that I recommend the Westlake part # LHWL101 which is a radial tire with a higher speed rating and a warranty that includes roadside assistance and tire replacement. This tire also has...

  • Recommended Trailer Tire for Size 175/80R13 that Will be Most Reliable
  • With trailer tires you want to inflate them to their max pressure rating listed on the sidewall when cold to ensure you get the full weight capacity and prevent heat build up. Typically what kills tires is exceeding the weight and speed ratings. Most trailer tires are only rated for 65 mph so that's easy for most people to exceed. My best recommendation for your tire size of ST175/80R13 would be the Westlake part # LHWL101 as this tire has a 75 mph speed rating and a 2 year roadside...

  • Recommendations for Tires That Will fit a 12 or 13 inch Wheel and Are Rated for at Least 70 mph
  • Since the only tire that we have that fits a 12 inch wheel and is rated for up to 81 mph is a bias tire, part # TTWSF48012C, I recommend going with a tire that fits a 13 inch wheel. There is nothing wrong with a bias tire; it's just that radial tires will run cooler on the highway than bias tires will. The 3 tires that we have which fit a 13 inch wheel and are rated for at least 70 mph are the Provider # TTWTRTM1758013C, Contender # C17513C, and the Westlake # LHWL101. Both the Provider...

  • Tire Recommendation to Replace ST175/80R13
  • The tire I would recommend in the size of ST175/80R13 would be the Westlake Lionshead part # LHWL101 as it is a radial tire with a capacity of 1,360 lbs at 50 psi, has a speed rating of 75 mph, and comes with a 2 year roadside assistance program in the event of a failure. This tire is also a Load Range C.

  • Tire Replacement for 6.50x13 for Shasta Compact Trailer
  • The closest modern equivalent to a 6.50-13 tire is a 175/80-13. The best option in this size is the Westlake part # LHWL101 which has a great speed rating at 75 mph, plenty of weight capacity for your camper, and comes with a warranty that includes roadside assistance. This tire size is going to be .5 of an inch wider than what you have and also .6 of an inch taller so it should easily fit on your camper.

  • Fender For Trailer with Tire Size ST175/80-13
  • We have trailer fenders that are designed specifically for the 13 inch trailer tire size like what you have like the Fulton part # F008583. I attached a picture that shows this fender installed on a trailer with a similar 13 inch tire size like you have. I know you didn't ask for a tire recommendation but the difference between the two sizes you mentioned is that the D in the one size indicates it's a bias-ply tire and the R indicates it's a radial. It's not ideal to have two different...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendations for Size ST175/80R13
  • If you need a Load Range D ST175/80R13 tire the Kenda part # AM10210 would be a great option. This tire has a weight capacity of 1,610 lbs at 65 psi. It also has a speed rating of 81 mph. The part # LHWL101 has a capacity of 1,360 lb at 50 psi but has a speed rating of 71 mph. I'd go with this tire as long it would have enough capacity for your trailer. Both of these are radials which are preferred over the bias ply size you had before. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire,...

  • Recommended Boat Trailer Tire Replacement For 175/80D13 Tires
  • The biggest issue with tire failure is overheating. I recommend you move from a Bias tire to a Radial tire because they dissipate heat better especially on highway driving. For your tire, I recommend the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10210. This tire should be run at the max psi rating which is 65 psi. It has a maximum load rating of D which is 1610 lbs at 65 psi. The max speed suggestion is 65 mph for this tire. If you want to travel faster,...

  • Can I use A ST175/80/13 Trailer Tire In Place Of A ST185/80/13 Trailer Tire
  • The differences between a radial and bias ply tire lie within the construct of the bands, not the overall dimensions. Therefore, a radial tire with the same section width as a bias tire, will not be any wider. Currently, we do not carry a ST185/80/13 trailer tire however, we do have a similar size in the ST175/80/13. The ST175/80/13 trailer wire will be .4 inches narrower than a ST185/80/13 tire. Both of which are designed to fit a 13" wheel. In regards to load range rating, though it...

  • Recommendation to Replace 175/80-13 Tires on Trailer
  • A 4.80-12 tire is going to be quite a bit smaller than the 175/80-13 tires you currently have mounted on your trailer. They will also not fit the same wheel size as what you currently have. Your 175/80-13 tire has an overall diameter of 24.1 inches compared to a 20.5 inch diameter on a 4.80-12 tire. Your current tires fit onto 13 inch wheels while the 4.80-12 tire will only work on 12 inch wheels. The load that each size tire is built to carry also differs considerably. For your...
