Westlake Radials

This radial ply tire from Westlake is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability.

Westlake Standard Tread Close-Up

The standard tread on this tire has solid, continuous ribs, and there are very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. This tire is designed for use on trailers, so it doesn't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Me and my family went on a 5000 mile round trip vacation. We encountered a lot of different road conditions without a problem and the tires are still currently being used on the camper. The only hitch I had was a very long lead time from the time of ordering the tire and the delivery. Seems like it was a couple months which was frustrating when I was trying to prepare for this trip. As you can see from the picture Montana mud aint no joke.

No problems, with only 2 tires on this camper i need all the confidence I can get. This tire does that for me

by:

great service, tire matches my existing - Thanks for the prompt delivery - nice to not have any hassles!

by:

Excellent service. Tire was ordered on Monday, received it Wednesday. WOW! That’s truly the way a business should operate.

by:

Excellent service and super fast delivery couldn't ask for any better business thanks

by:

I appreciate the quick delivery. The tires I purchased appear to be new, and all produced within one week of one another. They are the same model I currently have on my Imagine travel trailer, and I expect they'll perform well for my next long RVing adventure.

by:

So far so good. They have been on just a year and about 3000 miles. I had these same tires on as original equipment and changed them out at just under 5 years. the original tires had over 15,000 miles and the tread still looked great. I only changed them out because I hold pretty true to the 4 years of age change out rule. I probably could have ran the original set for 6 years with no problem. I am hoping I get similar performance out of this set.

by:

This is the second tire I bought for my RV. The product
Arrived a day earlier. The sales person was very knowledgeable and helpful.
I highly recommend E-Trailer
For all your needs

I needed a matching spare tire/wheel for our new boat. Looked at etrailer, found EXACTLY what we needed at a price less than others.
Blown away by the professional service! Videos of each of my products?? Who does that?? etrailer did and sent me exactly what was shown and what I wanted.
Came shipped in sturdy boxes with no chance of damaged items in shipping. Arrived BEFORE promised date.
Again, Who takes the time and pride to go well above an average purchase? Then follows up with me twice to ensure we are happy with them and the items?
I know where to get my next needs and to get my family and friends to do the same.
Well done etrailer!!

by:

Tire arrived in perfect condition. The year of the tire was made was the year purchased. Will purchase another set in two years since I replace every three years. Price was good.
Thanks you,

by:

This tire is OEM for what comes on a Columbus 5th wheel. It is not the cheap Chinese bomb that many RVer's talk about although it is made in China. I ruined my tire on a curb (rookie mistake) and wanted to match the original OEM. My 5th wheel has been in service since 2017 and these tires are doing very well. Arrived two days after I placed my order. etrailer.com to the rescue! I ordered the wheel and tire at the same time and only etrailer.com had what I needed online. Thank you etrailer!!!

by:

I am a great fan of etrailer, but these tires are very poor. I am very diligent about tire pressures and lug nut torque and check both before every trip or after an overnight stop. Tires are inflated per the manufacturers specification. The trailer had these as OEM equipment, and this tire was a replacement for one of them. The trailer is 24' and was carrying my Mini track car. Speed was around 70mph as a maximum. We weighed it and it was certainly no where near the weight limit for the trailer or the tires. Despite all of that, three of these tires delaminated and exploded on my ATC trailer in the space of two trips over about 6 months. They were costly to replace and did significant damage to my wheel wells and steps, which added to the expense. I would not recommend buying these tires.

by:

This is the second time I've purchased these tires from etrailer. The only reason I'm replacing two is due to an axle issue that caused the inside edge to prematurely wear out. These are easy to order and have a very quick delivery. I ordered them late (after hours on 4/22/2022. They were on my doorstep on 4/26/2022.

by:

Very good tires, second set I've owned.. Will use them again.. We have an account with etrailer. Always have treated up well.

by:

These tires are exactly what I ordered they are a very good tire. Had some exactly like these on another trailer and they did fantastic no problems and tread wear was good.

by:

These are the strongest and best trailers tires I've ever owned!

I drive thousands of miles a year on rural dirt roads, and these are virtually indestructible. Running anything other than these tires is worthless.

by:

Delivery time was excellent. Have not had tires mounted yet but everything looks great. Thanks

by:

Great lightning fast service. Highly re commend.

by:

Ordering was quick and easy. Tires came quicker than stated, I was pleasantly surprised. Great customer service, I give them a 10 !!

by:

Replace with new Westlake as I had good luck with them on my camper before

by:

Date code on tires we two years old.

by:

My last tires from etrailer lasted 3 years of daily use. Although I have yet to put many miles on these I expect excellent results. Lisa D. guided me through the selection process. This Westlake model is a better fit (205) than my previous tire (215) yet offeres the same 8-ply & D load rating. My local stores still think they don’t make radial trailer tires! I can’t recommend etrailer highly enough!

by:

After a year tires are still in great condition wear is normal for road use. would buy again.

  • When is it Beneficial to Change Tire Load Range and Tire Size on Boat Trailer
Increasing trailer wheel/tire size is sometimes possible and can provide certain potential benefits, but a larger tire does not necessarily gain anything. If your concern is weight load capacity then you may simply need to change your tires only, to a higher Load Range rating in the same size, that can mount on your current wheels. The worst enemy of a trailer tire is heat. Heat arises from three main causes: overloading the tire beyond its weight capacity, incorrect inflation pressure...

The largest diameter wheel we carry with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern is a 13 inch wheel. The largest tire for a 13 inch wheel is an ST185/80-13 tire, part # AM1ST79, which you can then put on a 13 by 4-1/2 inch wheel, part # AM20242. It has an outer diameter of 24.4 inches and is 7.2 inches wide. The only catch here is this is a bias tire, which might be great if you'll be towing on rough roads a lot of the time. If you're primarily going to be on highways I recommend going with a radial tire...

Since the only tire that we have that fits a 12 inch wheel and is rated for up to 81 mph is a bias tire, part # TTWSF48012C, I recommend going with a tire that fits a 13 inch wheel. There is nothing wrong with a bias tire; it's just that radial tires will run cooler on the highway than bias tires will. I'd recommend going with the closest tire size that is rated for a trailer like our high quality Westlake ST175/80R13 # LHWL101 which will fit on your current rim and will last a long time as long as you don't exceed it's speed rating of 75 mph, it's weight rating of 1,360 lbs and keep it inflated to it's max psi rating of 50.

I've scoured my site and the internet and I can't find a tire size 175/75r13. The closest is going to be the Westlake ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # LHWL101. Since radial tires flex more than bias tires, they generally have better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. They also run cooler than bias tires do, especially when under a load, so radials tend to last longer. While bias ply tires can be useful for off-road applications like farm use, radials are generally preferable on the highway and for long trips. Given your usage, I'd suggest upgrading to a radial tire. I've attached a helpful article on trailer tires for your convenience....

  • Selecting Trailer Tires to Avoid Blowouts During Freeway Driving
Trailer tire failure usually comes from heat, and excessive heat in a tire can arise from several potential causes. One is inflation; a tire that is under- or over-inflated will build up more internal heat. A second common cause is overloading the tire with more weight than it can handle. The third common cause for tire failure is operating the tire above its speed rating. This too will cause heat build up that can lead to premature failure. Therefore, a radial tire with the same section width as a bias tire, will not be any wider. Currently, we do not carry a ST185/80/13 trailer tire however, we do have a similar size in the ST175/80/13. The ST175/80/13 trailer wire will be .4 inches narrower than a ST185/80/13 tire.
