Can I use A ST175/80/13 Trailer Tire In Place Of A ST185/80/13 Trailer Tire

Updated 06/23/2017 | Published 06/22/2017

Question:

Ive got a 1996 Shorelander boat trailer that originally specs ST185/80D Load Range C tires. Id like to go with radials, but the wheel wells are pretty narrow and the bias tires just fit. If I go with radials tires but am concerned they will be wider than bias and will rub on the side of wheel well. Would it be ok to go with a ST175/80R tire with the higher load range D? My thinking is that the higher load rating can carry the weight, and a narrower tire in a radial would fit in the narrow wheel well. Id appreciate your thoughts.

The differences between a radial and bias ply tire lie within the construct of the bands, not the overall dimensions. Therefore, a radial tire with the same section width as a bias tire, will not be any wider.

Currently, we do not carry a ST185/80/13 trailer tire however, we do have a similar size in the ST175/80/13. The ST175/80/13 trailer wire will be .4 inches narrower than a ST185/80/13 tire. Both of which are designed to fit a 13" wheel. In regards to load range rating, though it would not hurt, I do not recommend choosing a higher load range tire unless you have added any additional weight to your trailer.

For a premium ST175/80/13 radial trailer tire with load range C, I recommend the Westlake ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # LHWL101 and for a more economical option, I recommend the Provider ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # TTWTRTM1758013C. Both tires are a great option however, Westlake brand tires come equipped with a 5 year manufacturers warranty and 2 year roadside assistance warranty whereas, Provider brand tires are only equipped with a 2-year manufactures warranty.

I have attached a video review of both tires for you.
