Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tow Bar Adapter Installation - 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Hi, John with etrailer. Listen, if you are already set up to tow like these folks here and they just wanted to add their Jeep to their arsenal of flat towed vehicles, well this is one of the options that you have out there. This is gonna adapt a Roadmaster base plate to certain types of tow bars. This right here is the Roadmaster Tow Bar Adapter on our 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Now to begin your installation, it's gonna be easiest if you have your arms mounted into your base plate. For us today we have a hash mark on the inside.

This is gonna be to the inside of our vehicle and they're gonna be locked in like this. Now we need to get our brackets mounted onto our arms. We've got these up on the table here. So we're gonna pull the pins on each side and we'll have our brackets. Now these brackets are side specific and this is nice when it's brand new, but you'd also need to know once these labels come off, you need to know which side.

We can see this says driver's side of car and passenger side of car. So you just need to remember if you can that we have a flange on the inside and not on the outside. So these are all gonna go towards the inside of the car. We can begin by grabbing a plate, some bolts, flat washers, lock washers, and hex nuts. And that's what we're gonna need to install these onto our arms.

Now we'll grab our driver's side bracket and come to the driver's side arm. On our base plate we'll match these up. Take the bracket that came with your kit, we'll put that there and take your hex bolts and run them through. Then on the backside, take a flat washer on each bolt, a split ring lock washer on each bolt, and then a hex nut. Now keep these loose right now because we're gonna need to adjust these in just a minute when we get the crossbar.

So get this done for the passenger side as well. Now we can take our crossbar. You're gonna notice alignment dowels on the bottom and our hookups on the front where our tow bar is gonna attach to. And set this down onto the brackets. You may have to move them back and forth. This is why we kept them loose. Now the other reason why we kept them loose, you can see how much play is in here. And when you're flat towing you wanna keep this centered as much as possible to reduce wear and tear on your equipment. So the other reason we want this loose and lined up we want this to be easy to take on and off. If it's too tight or too loose, it's gonna be a real pain and that's not what you want when you're flat towing and trying to have a good time out here. So once you're happy with the alignment on your Jeep and the way that it comes on and off you can snug up the brackets to the arms. Now, there's not gonna be any torque values but I do recommend using Blue Loctite and they say you're gonna have two layers of protection there. You're gonna have a split ring lock washer, and Blue Loctite holding these together. It's advisable to check these out once in a while. Make sure they don't get loose on you. Hardware's gonna be 19 millimeter. Now I'm using a torque wrench just to make sure that these bolts are uniformly tight. Like I said, there's no torque specs on here but this is grade five hardware. And so I have a torque range that I'm looking for on this to keep it together. Now with our brackets mounted, go ahead and test fit the crossbar. Yeah, so I'm actually gonna make an adjustment. This one, just by torquing it down it moved it in a little bit. And you may have to do the same thing. It should be able to slip on and off easily. Even though we have movement in the arms it should still be able to go on and off easily. This will drag in just a little bit. Once you're happy with the fit of your crossbar you can lock it in place with the pins. Now you're gonna notice graphics up here are saying yes and no. If you look at these pins, you're gonna see that the ring comes in at the bottom and at the top on the one side. So when these go in, they need to snap down and lock onto the shaft up here. If these go backwards, sometimes this is gonna hang up like that. That's really what the graphic's showing you right there. So you wanna make sure that you have positive engagement every time you do this. It doesn't matter so much if it goes from the left or from the right, just make sure that the ring is touching. That's gonna lock our crossbar into place. Now we can attach the tow bar. Now the adapter comes with pin and clips just in case either yours with your tow bar are worn out or if you just want brand new clips. So that is something that's nice as well. So from here out, you can either unhook your tow bar here or here at the the crossbar. And this was just one way to add a second vehicle to your flat tow list. Make sure you check out our website. There's other ways that you can do it as well, whichever one works for you best. That was a look at the Roadmaster Tow Bar Adapter on our 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I am a big fan of Roadmaster products (I own a 2006 Honda CR-V outfitted with a Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms) and this Tow Bar Adapter is no exception. Roadmaster products are designed with quality and ease of use in mind and I especially like the quick disconnect aspect of this hardware. To make things even better, working with etrailer is a pleasure. Their product line is robust and items are delivered in a safe, timely manner and I love the tracking feature.

I recently purchased a Roadmaster base plate kit and hitch adapter for my Dodge Ram. It was purchased to replace a Blue Ox unit that had been installed poorly previously. It was easy to install with no frame drilling and only minor alterations. It fits and works perfectly. Rachel at etrailer was very helpful, knowledgeable and patient while I got her the necessary information. I am very pleased and would not hesitate to call them again. Frank S

by:

Great customer service

by:

Easy to use. Great service.

by:

I really like using the Demco non-binding tow bar. Hooking up is so much easier with it than our previous tow bar. No need to level and square up the toad with the motor home. I also like having the safety cables permanently attached to the bar.
We changed toad vehicles this year, so I bought a Demco base plate for our CRV. The tow bar shafts simply plug into the base plate. It couldn't get any easier.

by:

I've only used it once but it works great with my blue-ox tow bar.

I have now used it many times and it is still a good choice.

The Roadmaster tow bar adapter was just what I needed to complete the install of my Blue Ox tow bar. It is easy to attach and remove.

by:

I purchased a JEEP Wrangler that was set up for a ROADMASTER towing system. I own a Blue Ox system. So I needed an adapter to make it work. This TOW BAR is just perfect. It fits exactly to specs and I now feel safe towing my new JEEP. I especially like the way your system tracks an order, from the moment it's is received on line to the time it is being delivered in my area. I shows all of the stops and handling that it goes through. It is a great system. I will order from you again in the future and highly recommend your products.

Product does what Roadmaster said it would. eTrailer is always fast to ship and easy to deal with. Sometimes I wish they would do a better job of packaging for shipment. At times, heavy products are received hanging out of the box. Given they are tow brackets and hitches, it's not that big of a problem.

  • Can Vehicle with Roadmaster Base Plate Connect to Blue Ox Tow Bar
We do have an adapter that will allow you to connect your Blue Ox tow bar to your Roadmaster base plate kit with the # RM-032 for if your base plate requires a crossbar or part # BX88185 if you have the direct connect style of base plate kits. If your base plates look like the picture I attached you'd need the # RM-032 as that's the crossbar style.

  • How to Fit 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata Roadmaster Base Plate Kit with Blue Ox Tow Bar
Hey Glenn, thanks for reaching out! The Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit # 52728-1 that fits your 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata won't be compatible with the Blue Ox Base Plate tab you have. Since it sounds like you already have a Blue Ox tow bar, I recommend picking up the Roadmaster Base Plate Adapter Bracket # RM-032 so you can then use your existing tow bar with the Roadmaster base plate kit.

  • Connecting Roadmaster 1559-1 Base Plates with Missing Weldments to Blue Ox Tow Bar
I reached out to my contact at Roadmaster and he said that the Replacement Driver Side Arm C001477 will not fit your existing Roadmaster 1559-1 base plates. He said that the weldments for your particular base plate kit are no longer available so your only real option at this point is to replace the entire kit. If you were to go with another Roadmaster Base Plate Kit like part # RM-521559-4, which is confirmed to fit your 2007 Honda CR-V, you would still need to add the Adapter # RM-032...

  • Which Base Plate Adapter for Blue Ox Tow Bar and Roadmaster or Demco Baseplates on 2021 Jeep JLU
In order to make Roadmaster or Demco base plates like the # RM-521453-4, # RM-521453-5 or # DM9519336 work with a Blue Ox tow bar you will need adapters that depend on the specific tow bar and base plate combination. The # RM-521453-4 can use either # RM-032 or # BX88178 to make it compatible with most Blue Ox tow bars. The # RM-521453-5 uses the # BX88185 to make it compatible with the same Blue Ox tow bars.
