Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of this spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger. These straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, shackle straps, and suspension bolts. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer. You should, however, replace your shackle straps because they are usually the first component to wear out. You may choose to replace old suspension bolts as well. It is recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

  • How to Determine Correct Leaf Springs For 2018 Jayco Travel Trailer
Hi Austin, I can help you determine the right replacement double-eye leaf springs for your 2018 Jayco trailer, though we don't have any way of knowing what specific ones you need. It's pretty easy though, as all you need to do is measure your current leaf springs from center-to-center of the spring eyes, and you also need to know the weight rating of your axle. Based on its weight, your 174BH is likely to have a 3,500 lb axle, though you'll want to double check just to be sure. Leaf springs...

  • Questions About Replacing Leaf Spring On 2002 Ranger Single Axle Trailer
Hello Rocky, thanks for reaching out. If your new leaf springs do not have as much of an arch as the old springs they are definitely not going to help your situation if your tires are already rubbing on the fenders. What we would usually do here is look at the unloaded dimensions of the current spring and try to find something that matches. Just for an example, take a look at the dimensions of the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # DX23CR below. It measures 25-1/4" across and the "arch" is 3"...

  • Upgrading Leaf Springs on a Trailer with a 3500 Pound Axle
If you are wanting to go to higher capacity leaf springs I would advise against it. The problem is that since the trailer axle is rated for 3,500 pounds you won't gain any additional capacity by switching to higher capacity springs. What it will do is not allow the suspension to compress as much leading to a very stiff and jarring ride for the trailer and anything in it. Another problem is that alternate springs may not have the correct measurements and that would mean that the spring...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For 2017 Keystone Bullet Premier Travel Trailer
Since you mentioned that you broke a leaf spring and not the axle, in order to determine which replacement leaf springs you'll need for your 2017 Keystone Bullet Premier Ultra Lite Travel Trailer you will need to measure your current springs from the centers of one spring eye to the other. This distance is going to determine which springs will fit as a replacement. Since we know you have a 3500-lb axle, we can narrow it down a bit. If your old springs measure roughly 23-1/8" long from...

  • Bear Aluminum Boat Trailer Replacement Axle and Suspension Parts For 3,500LB Tandem Axle Trailer
I reached out to Bear and they were able to confirm that your 3,500lb axles use a #84 spindle. This will allow you to use the Hub Bearing Kit # BK2-100 on each of your axle hubs. The kit includes new inner and outer bearings and races, a grease seal, cotter pin, and tang washer for one hub. The Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors # BB1980A-SS can be used if your axles do not already have the EZ Lube spindle. They were also able to tell me they use a 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e54SR. • Shackles on Leaf Springs Rubbing Frame of Trailer
Yes, this could be caused by worn out leaf springs on your trailer. Sometimes you'll see this caused by using shackles that are too long, but in this case it's probably safe to assume that this is being caused by worn out leaf springs. If you need help finding replacement springs, just let me know the length of your current springs and I can make a recommendation for your 3500-lb axles. To measure your springs, measure from the center of one eye to the center of the other.

The trailer hub part # 8-258-5UC1 that you referenced is an exact fit for the spindle you have on your trailer based on the bearing numbers you listed and the wheel bolt pattern. To jump up to a 3,500 lb axle would require more info from you. I'd need spring seat center to spring seat center plus hub face to hub face off your old axles. You have slipper springs which we can help with that as well. How long are the springs you have now?

I'd be more than happy to help you find some replacement leaf springs for your trailer! First thing's first though, I'll need you to take the load off of your current leaf springs by raising the frame of your trailer so there isn't a load on the springs (or at least on one side) and then measuring from center-eye to center-eye so I know the correct length to look for. Leaf springs will flatten out over time so if your springs truly are 10 years old then getting replacement springs with...

  • Which replacement spring for a 2005 Bigfoot 21RB travel trailer
I looked up your 2005 Bigfoot 21RB and found that it is a tandem axle trailer. I couldn't find the GVWR for your specific model though. Most seemed considerably lighter than what you mentioned so you might verify what you have. Or you can get me the diameter of your axles and that would be a good indicator. The axle info should be listed on a sticker that's on the axle as well. Or it can be listed on the VIN plate/sticker of the trailer.

  • What is Wrong with My Trailer Suspension? Why Have I Changed my Bearings 5 Times in 8 Months?
Hello Dalton, First off, thanks for the detailed write-up. No need to apologize, it's clear you've put a ton of time into this and you're dealing with a frustrating situation that honestly shouldn't be happening with a brand-new trailer. From what you described, it sounds like the root of your issues goes back to the trailer’s suspension geometry being off from the start. That bouncing or “one-wheel-at-a-time” hop around 35 mph really does sound like a harmonic issue, and likely the result...

We have ways to help you find out what you need but you'll have to do some measuring to determine exactly what your trailer needs. Judging by what you listed it looks like you have a triple axle setup that uses 3,500 lb axles. So lets first start with leaf springs. For that you'd want the 3,500 lb springs part # e54SR which matches the length of what you have now and the capacity. The Dexter Suspension Kit part # K71-360-00 you referenced would then work well with this. So now for brakes...

Hi David; you will have to measure your other leaf spring to find the right replacement. I recommend measuring the flat length to get the most accurate measurement, see the article linked further down on this page. For example, if you found that the overall flat length was 26-3/8", or the eye to eye measurement was 25-1/4", you could use the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles # e54SR. • What Is The Purpose Of Steel band On Leaf Springs
The leaf springs are normally installed with the band forward of the axle, but it is not something that has to be done that way. The steel band is called the rebound clip. Their main purpose is to help keep the main leaf from breaking on a rebound. When the weight of a vehicle or trailer is on the spring, all of the leaves work together to support the spring above them. If the wheel drops for any reason the total weight of the axle falls on the main leaf if there are no rebound clips....

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For A 2014 Trail Star Boat Trailer
Hey Robert, A bouncy ride could indicate that your leaf springs are worn out and in need of replacement, but could also indicate that you're overinflating the tires. I would first check the tires to make sure the psi rating is the same as what's on the sidewall of the tires. To replace the leaf springs you'll want to unload and lift the trailer on one side to take the pressure off of the leaf spring. You can then measure from the center of one eyelet to the other. Once we have this measurement...

  • Boat Trailer Leaf Spring Recommendation for a 5,000 lb Boat and Old Springs are 26 inches
Priority one for picking out a leaf spring is matching the weight capacity of it with the trailer's weight capacity. Spring hangers can be moved if needed, but going with too light of a spring would be a bad move. Since springs flatten out over time you would want a spring that is slightly under your 26 inch length that you measured like the part # e54SR that is 25-1/8 inches long and has a 3,500 lb axle capacity. Based on the dimension and weight of your boat trailer this spring should...

  • Why Would Camper with New Springs Still Lean to One Side
Hey Greg, the real issue is probably that the one side of the trailer weighs more than the other and that's why it sits a little lower. I would see if you can move weight from one side to the other. I would not recommend running two different spring rates on the left and right side of the trailer as that would cause unpredictable suspension behavior from side to side. I also do not recommend a spacer either.

Hey Jason, welcome back! The 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles item # e57SR is the same length so it would definitely work. Bumping up an extra 500 lbs per spring is definitely going to help with the longevity of your suspension. That increase in capacity along with you dropping down a leaf won't make your suspension stiff. The Dexter item # DX35CR would be a better replacement option though. Dexter's leaf springs are a higher quality and will last longer. Please note...
