It's Curt with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Thule WingBar Evo roof rack on our 2024 Hyundai Tucson. Now if you've had any experience with this roof rack or if you watch this video and have questions about it, please leave those in the comments below. We'd love to take those stories and those questions and share them with our other neighbors in order to help them make the best decision for themselves. When you're planning your next adventure in your Tucson, you may find yourself coming across some items that you either don't want to travel with in the vehicle or they're just simply too large to fit in there. So whether it's a rooftop cargo box, a kayak carrier, or you prefer to use a rooftop bike rack, all of those are items that can be used on this system.
The WingBar Evo is gonna be an overhanging track mounted system. They're 50 inches long and with the overhang and the track, that is a lot of bar space to be able to utilize. As long as you're not going over your weight limit, you could possibly stack things up here side by side. And with that being said, these crossbars have a weight limit of 165 pounds. However, you still want to double check your owner's manual for your vehicle.
Make sure of your rooftop capacity for the vehicle, and if it's lower than 165 pounds, then that's your capacity. So being a 50 inch bar with the overhang, that's a lot of space to add items up here. They can be used with the clamp style accessories or with track mounted accessories. And one of the things I really like about the WingBar is that you can access your track without removing the end cap on your bars. And that's nice because those tabs, they could break.
You could lose the end cap of it. And with this, you don't really have to worry about it, you just simply flip it over. The way that their T track works is that the channel that they have in here, rather than one piece of weather stripping, they've split it so that we actually don't have to remove the weather stripping and do any cutting. We could simply place our T slat accessories in, slide them down the line and lock them into place. But if your Tucson has flush rails like ours does, your crossbars are gonna attach through a custom vehicle foot kit here.
This is gonna allow you to grab onto those flush rails. And on the Tucson, there aren't fixed mounting points on the flush rails like there are on a lot of other vehicles. That gives us the freedom to really kind of put these wherever we'd like to fit 'em. However, I would recommend that you maintain a crossbar spread of a minimum 26 inches. Any less than that you're really gonna run out of options as far as what kind of accessories you can put up here. There are really only two points of contention as far as placements with these that you should concern yourself with. One would be if you have a sunroof on your Tucson, you want to be careful of the clearance that you have under here and depending on what you have overhanging in the front. The other would be the antenna in the back. Now the antenna is actually not as high as our clearance is on the crossbars, which by the way, is it about 2-3/4 inches from the roof to the bottom of the crossbar. You should not have any difficulty if they're placed where we have them placed with anything interfering with that. It may become a problem though if you decide to move this crossbar back. You just want to keep in mind what kind of clearance you have and what kind of accessories you're putting up here. So now that we've gone over some of the features of the Thule WingBar Evo, follow along with us while we show you how we got it installed. To install this roof rack, it's actually very simple. Thule provides really clear instructions that make it easy to follow along. You only need to provide one tool yourself, and that would be a measuring tape just to make sure that we've got our crossbar spread correct and that we've got an equal amount of overhang on our bars. So we're gonna begin by assembling our towers. And this is a really, really easy process. Thule does a great job of labeling their parts. We'll have parts in the foot kit, A, B, and C. These are the parts that came in the vehicle specific kit that's gonna allow this to attach onto your Tucson. So the first thing we'll do is simply take part A. We're gonna slip it right over with that bolt coming through, just like that. Next thing we'll attach is our foot pad, part B, which is gonna go right on the bottom as so. There are some little rubber tabs that you could take a look at just to make sure everything goes in nice and flush. As you can see here, we got 'em poking through right there. Next thing we'll do is take part C and this is gonna complete our clamp. So that claw is gonna be what grabs on to our rails. The last thing we're gonna do is go ahead and loosely insert this bolt. We don't want to tighten it down too much. The more we tighten this down, the more it's gonna tighten down our claws and we wanna make sure we get 'em around the rails when we're putting 'em up with the bars. So we've already got our other tower ready, so we're gonna turn our bar over, remove the end cap, and then what you'll need to do is making sure that the open bolt is facing outward, we're gonna line up these T slots right here and slide it right on in. Once that's in, we'll replace our end cap so it doesn't slip off on us, and we'll repeat the process on the other side. When we're getting these up and mounted, if you're doing this by yourself, just be really careful not to scratch your roof up. So we've got one side done over there already. We just want to get this so that those claws are going around the lip of your rail right here. And then as we tighten 'em down through this bolt, it's gonna tighten the crossbar down to our towers while simultaneously letting the claw reach up and have the towers grab onto the rail. Got everything up here. It's mounted in a good position with our rubber pads seated nicely, claws over each end. We had installed the back rack already, so the measurement that we took on that just to make sure that they're perpendicular to each other is from the end of the rail to the center here. Once we had that lined up equally on both sides, we used the center of this bar to mark out the center of this one. So what we did was we actually lined it up with the door seam here, came up with a 28 inch crossbar spread, which is a fantastic spread, that can accommodate just about anything you'd like to put up here. We also can adjust how even our crossbars are as far as the overhang going on either side. So with that, we evened it out at just about 5-1/4 inches per side. So we're gonna make that adjustment. Double check the other side, then we're gonna get our bolts tightened down. This tool provided by Thule is a torquing tool. And did you hear that little pop That's gonna indicate that everything is tightened down enough. So now our crossbar is firmly attached to our feet. Our feet are firmly attached to our rails and we could go ahead and put the foot covers on these. So this is really gonna be really easy. It'll just snap up into place up here. Nothing too complicated about it. Now when you get it initially, you're gonna have this little plastic piece right here that you can lock these on using a screwdriver. However, from a security standpoint, I like the idea of having lockable cores on here. Thule does use a one key system that'll allow you to buy lock cores with keys to match for all the towers, and you could get them keyed alike to any of your tool accessories, whether it's a bike rack, a rooftop cargo box, ski carrier, kayak carrier, whatever they have that works with their one key system, you'll be able to get a matching set of keys for. Another great feature about these bars is once you have them installed, you can kind of mark exactly where they need to be. Now because there's a taper to the rail here, these are gonna be slightly different on each bar. But if you remember what one goes on front and what one goes on back, it's got this little tab here that once they're set, you can slide this over. And as long as you don't move that for any reason, if you ever wanna remove these bars and put 'em back on, it's gonna be really easy to figure out exactly where your lengths are and it kind of eliminates that extra measuring we did, making sure that our overhang is good. But now that got everything on here solidly, we're ready to load up and get onto our next adventure. That was a look at the Thule WingBar Evo roof rack on our 2024 Hyundai Tucson.
