A P2-rated light produces a 45-degree angle of light to either side of its centerline for a total of 90 degrees of coverage. This beam pattern can be seen straight on, but it cannot be seen clearly from the side. So this type of light can be used as either a side marker light or a clearance light, but it cannot function as both. If you need both functions, then you must install 2 separate lights on your trailer - one as a front or rear clearance light and one as a side marker light.
Surface-mount trailer lights install using a flange or bracket with mounting holes. These lights lay flat against the trailer surface and only require a small, often pre-existing hole, for wiring. Mounting hardware is used to secure the light to the trailer.

Today we're taking a look at the Peterson clearance or side marker light. This is a small oval trailer light that serves as either a side marker light or clearance light on your trailer.It features a scratch resistant red acrylic lens and it sits on a high impact base. It mounts on the surface of the trailer, so you remove the lens to gain access to your mount holes. Mounting hardware, not included. It's a two mount hole design. It can be mounted horizontally or vertically.When it comes to the wiring, it's a single wire design.
So this is your power wire and then it grounds through the mounting hardware on this side of the unit. So there's a little metal tab that runs through there and as the hardware contacts that and then goes into your trailer, it grounds the unit. So single wire design, grounds through mounting hardware. It is a P two rated light and an incandescent bulb is included. Bulb number is 193.We're going to take a look at the dimensions real quick.
Then we'll hook it up to power so you can see what it looks like. Edge to edge, going this direction, measures about three and a half inches long. Edge to Edge this direction is about one and 1/8 to one and 3/16, right in that area. And then the depth measurement is about one and 1/16 inches deep.Has a nice foam gasket on the bottom. Provides some cushion at the mounting location.
The distance between our mount holes on center, these are separated on center by two and three quarter inches.We're going to go and hook it up to power. That way you can see what it looks like with power running to it and then we'll also turn off our overhead lights so you can see it in a low light setting. So you can see here that it sends out a really nice clear consistent signal. Again, it contains one incandescent bulb. Bulb number is 193.
The red lens allows plenty of light to come through and again, this functions as either a side marker light or clearance light on your trailer. That's going to do it for today's look at the Peterson clearance or side marker light.
