How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Jack For A 2018 Jayco Whitehawk
Hi Tom, I have two options to replace the electric tongue jack on your Jayco Whitehawk: Option 1: Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX. This jack is going to be your no-frills 'get the job done' style jack. It has a 3,500lb capacity and what it lacks in looks it makes up for in dependability. The simple design of this jack also allows for easier replacement of damaged or worn components unlike a lot of other jacks that require complete replacement when something malfunctions. Option...

  • Availability of Wiring Diagram for the Replacement Power Switch # EJ-3520-PSW
I am attaching a picture of the Replacement Power Switch # EJ-3520-PSW when it is properly installed on the Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX but unfortunately there isn't a wiring diagram available. If you be mindful to note which position each wire is supposed to be in when you disconnect your current switch you simply just have to install this switch in the same way.

  • Is There Trailer Jack that Has Best Tailgate Clearance
Hey Patty, the a-frame trailer jack we offer that has the best tailgate clearance is the Ultimate Trailer Jack part # 322-RDJ-2K which allows you to vertically adjust how high the crank handle is. Otherwise if you are looking at a powered a-frame jack like the # EJ-3520-BBX you can install these rotated so that the motor is off to the side. Which style are you looking for?

  • Troubleshooting Ram Electric Jack Lights Working But Jack Not Operating
If the light on your Ram Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX is working but the jack motor is not actually getting any or enough power to operate, I first recommend checking to make sure the power source is good. Make sure the battery you are using is fully charged and in good condition. If the battery is good, check to make sure you have a solid ground connection to a clean, bare metal surface. A weak ground might be allowing for just enough power to reach and power the lights, but...

I am not sure what your exact question is but the Lippert Power Gear Jack 181794 has been discontinued and there are no replacement parts available for this. Therefore, if you have an issue with yours then you will need to replace the entire jack and the correct one for this is the Lippert Electric Trailer Jack with Footplate part # LC285318. There is also a more cost effective replacement as well, the Electric Jack w/ Footplate part # EJ-3520-BBX or part # EJ-3520-WBX. These three options...

  • Replacement Electric Tongue Jack for a 2018 Independence Casita Travel Trailer
It sure is Judson. The Electric Jack w/ Footplate item # EJ-3520-BBX would be a great addition to your 2018 Independence Casita travel trailer. It's got a 3,500 lbs capacity and a total lift of 25-1/8" including the drop leg. This jack fits a standard A-frame trailer tongue. I've linked an installation video below to help you get it set up. If you have any additional questions, go ahead and click on the box that says Reply to Jerred H and I'll be happy to answer them.

Electric tongue jacks like the Electric Jack w/ Footplate - A-Frame - 25-1/8" Lift - 3.5K - Black # EJ-3520-BBX are designed to use a 12v power so if you want constant power I recommend using a trailer battery for connection. If you only want power when connected to your vehicle 7-way, you can use the Pollak Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End # PK12706 to connect to the 12v Pin.

On the etrailer.com Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX that you referenced the 30 amp barrel fuse like # EJ-FUSE is located in a flared opening right where the black power wire comes out of the motor housing. It is very easy to access and replace if the need arises. I have attached a short video demonstration on this jack that you can check out as well.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Jack that Won't Raise With Just Battery Power

  • Electric Jack Only Works When Connected to Tow Vehicle
The problem you have with the Electric Jack w/ Footplate part # EJ-3520-BBX is likely due to a dead battery. The reason it will only work when connected to the tow vehicle is because the tow vehicle is using the 7-way trailer connector to provide a charge to the trailer battery. The trailer battery is likely dead since the jack only works when hooked up to the tow vehicle which in this case is the battery charger. I recommend checking the trailer battery to ensure it is fully charged.

  • Husky HB4500 Electric Jack Starts Going Down As Soon As Power Switch Is Released
Hello Garry, thanks for reaching out. It sounds like something in internally wrong with your jack. Could be a problem with the screw mechanism or with the motor. That husky hb4500 jack is an older model that is no longer available, so there are no replacement parts. The only fix I can offer would be a whole new jack. For that I recommend the following: - Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 23" Lift - 4,500 lbs - Black # SC63VR

  • Why Does Electric Landing Gear on a 5th Wheel Trailer Go Up But Not Down.
If the motor is not running when you are trying to retract the landing gear then there is likely a problem with the switch and it will have to be replaced. We might have the switch but I would need to know the model landing gear you have on your trailer. If the motor is running and it will not go down then there is likely a problem with the gear box, gears in the legs, or a problem with the screw and/or nut inside the jack legs that is not letting it go down. Motors and gear boxes can...

The etrailer brand # EJ-3527-BBX is equipped with a 7-way plug that technically can be plugged into the 7-way trailer connector on your 2020 Ford F-150, but it will not function due to the "intelligent" towing package these come with now. This makes your towing functions only operate when your truck detects a trailer with electric brakes. • Determining Needed Capacity for A-Frame Jack on 7,000 Pound Trailer
When choosing an A-frame jack, you will just need to make sure that it has the capacity to lift the trailer's tongue weight. The tongue weight should be around 10 to 15 percent of its total weight. Using the 7,000 pound loaded weight that you mentioned in your question, you are looking at a loaded tongue weight of around 700 to 1,050 pounds. The Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX you were already looking at has a 3,500lb lifting capacity and is what I typically recommend for an electric jack replacement since we offer replacement parts for this model. A lot of other jack manufacturers won't offer replacement parts which leaves you having to replace the entire jack...
