Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/01/2024

Question:

How to determine the weight I should purchase for an electric trailer jack. My trailer GVWR is 6000 Thor/California 161l classified as a toy hauler with no toys to carry. Camping trailer only.

Hey Paul,

Tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the trailer's GVWR so you would need a jack that could handle 600lb to 900lbs in order to lift the tongue. The Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX you were already looking at has a 3,500lb lifting capacity and is what I typically recommend for an electric jack replacement since we offer replacement parts for this model. A lot of other jack manufacturers won't offer replacement parts which leaves you having to replace the entire jack when one thing eventually goes out.

I highly recommend also picking up a jack head cover # UF38-944020 to protect your investment from the weather and keep it working for years.

Hey Paul, how did the electric jack work out for your toy hauler? Did the lifting capacity meet your needs when raising the tongue? Your feedback could really help others choosing a jack for a similar trailer setup.
