SR1 Spare Tire Bike Rack

Tired of your vehicle's rear-mounted spare tire preventing you from using most trunk- and hitch-mounted bicycle carriers? No more worries. The SR1 bike rack mounts to your spare and lets you transport up to two bikes on the back of your vehicle.

SR1 Installation

This easy-to-use rack fits spare tires up to 15 inches wide and with any bolt pattern. Simply loosen the adjustment bolts to widen the mounting brace to fit your spare, place the brace over the spare, and tighten the bolts until the rack is snug. Then wrap the side strap under the bottom of the tire and the two front straps around the back of the tire to minimize side-to-side and front-to-back movement of the rack.

Pivoting Arms

SR1 Arms

Dual, pivoting arms support your bikes and better accommodate women's, children's and alternative frames. (An adapter bar [HRBA-PRO - sold separately] may still be required.) The spring-loaded arms can be folded in when you're not using the rack.

Adjustable Support Bar for Offset Spares

SR1 Bar

If you have an offset spare tire, the support bar on which the arms are mounted can be installed 4-1/2" to the left or 4-1/2" to the right side of the rack base. This centers your bikes on your vehicle, keeping them from hanging out to the side.

Soft Cradles

SR1 Cradles

Soft rubber cradles with straps firmly grip your bike's frame. The cradles rotate and slide along the arms, so you can easily adjust them based on the type and number of bikes you're transporting. And you can use the integrated safety strap to help keep your bikes tied down.

A cable lock (sold separately) are recommended to deter theft of the rack and your bikes.

Jeep

It's sturdy even off-road, and it's simple to take on and off. I've had to use my spare tire twice since owning this rack, and although I have to remove my bike and loosen the bike rack bolts a bit, it comes off and goes back on with minimal effort, which is nice when you're on the Alaska Highway and it's snowing.

I've carried my full-suspension bike on this rack for 35k miles all over the U.S. and Canada. I like how my bike fits close to the tire, where I lock it. My tailgate opens without the bike touching the side of my Jeep.

Great bang for the buck.

This HRSR1 bike carrier will not fit a 2023 Jeep Wrangler JL UNLESS you remove the stock Liddy Light and associated bracket. Upon discovering this, I was able to locate an aftermarket kit which allows for the relocation of the light to just above the rear camera. The kit was easily installed and the bike mount was installed just as easily as the directions explain. The new location of the light is partially obscured with the bikes mounted and, although not ideal, it is adequate and certainly better than total removal. I was unable to find any mention of this situation in the install instructions or reviews prior to purchase of the rack. I just wish I had been aware of this before purchase. I would have rated 5 stars for this product were it not for the slight hiccup. Kudos to etrailer. It is always a pleasure to do business with them. They are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.

2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser

When I purchased this rack it specifically said it would fit on a FJ Cruiser factory equipment tire. The rack does accommodate the width but not the height (P265/70R17) so the (U) section of the rack is not long enough to come in contact with the lower part of the tire. This makes the rack unexceptional the carry bikes on the tire do to the lack of support! The rack itself is well constructed and would be excellent on a smaller tire. I modified this rack so it would contact the tire in two places, this works great and just returned from a 4,000 mile trip and could not be happier. Easy to put on, rock solid ride, though my bike frames are small tube and I used a small piece of split garden hose to take the slop out of the rubber frame cradles.

Still love the rack, after modifications. I hope Etrailer understands the problem installing the rack on the OEM spare tire on the Toyota Fj. Without the mod pictured in my review, the bikes cannot be held securely.

2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser

As an owner of a Toyota FJ Cruiser(w/a backup camera) I've been looking for a spare tire Bike rack for my Mt. Bike. This rack worked very well, it fit over the tire(265/70 r17)nicely & all the straps fit correctly & securly. There was no movement of the rack or the bike on the dirt roads I was travelling. I did need to add a cross bar(see above review) to keep the down U off the tire rim & because I have a full suspension bike it was positioned weird. Bottom line, very nice rack kept everything secure. Quite pleased & great price also!!

If you are interested, an adapter bar like part # HRBA-PRO would hold your mountain bike in a more level position in the spare tire carrier.

Seems great! Strong & secure. etrailer sent the item in no time! Set up was fairly easy for me, although there were moments I could have used an extra set of helping hands. Nevertheless I did it myself. I'm excited to have the freedom to ride my bike on trails that I would normally not be able to access!

Thank you for sending in the product review and photo! You might want to consider a frame adapter bar like # 64005. The adapter bar would span the distance from the seat post to the handlebar gooseneck, and will allow you to carry the bike so that it is level. It will also provide more ground clearance under the bike.

First impressions - mounted on a 2014 Toyota FJ with 285/70-17 tires.

Pros-
-Very compact, when folded.
-With one 29 lbs MTB, it seems very sturdy and stable when properly mounted.
-Allows for use of my backup camera. Even with my one bike mounted, the camera works pretty well. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on your bike(s),

Cons -
- Quite a bit heavier than I thought it would be.
- Took longer to mount correctly on the FJ than I anticipated. Subsequent mounts and removals should go smoother. Instructions were pretty much worthless. I thought it was going to be a no brainer, but.... The concept was easy to grasp, but the implementation a little less so.
- While there are loooong straps hanging all over the place, I’d plan on having some nice Velcro straps to conveniently secure things.
- It handled the width of my 285/70-17 tires, however it does not fit perfectly for taller tires on 17” wheels. The lower “U” frame section, that should rest at the bottom of the tire and provide stability, is too short. Therefore, it is free to move around. Besides the stability issue, this lower portion of the rack may bang against the rim. Can’t be good for those nice rims. Fortunately, this should be an easy fix. At the very least, pad the bottom portion of the frame to spare the wheel. As a temporary fix, I used a section of foam pipe insulation (photo attached). I plan to attach a lower cross bar, with a couple of U-clamps, that will span to the tire (concept photo attached).

The $64k question for me is, why doesn’t Hollywood Racks offer a longer version of this rack for taller tires. In the absence of that, they could supply a simple cross bar adaptor. Considering my limited experience with this rack, I have given it 4 stars. I would have given it 5 stars, but I don’t think the system is complete without a packaged solution to the tire issue. Shouldn’t expect the customer to MacGyver solutions to finish off a product.

This rack is very easy to put on the spare tire. It works fine with most bikes. It does not work with the newer expensive mtn bikes whose frames are really wide. it doesn't sit in the rubber holders correctly. It's great for slim framed bikes.

I did hear back from Hollywood Racks about the bike rack. They advised that you can cut the cradles in half, then spread them just far enough apart to accommodate the bikes in question. The straps will have plenty of stretch left in them to allow for the additional width.

by:
2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

view when not in use. With the extension bar the bike fits securely and comfortably on the arms. The extra straps completely secure the frame so it doesn’t wobble on the road and evenly distributes the weight so there is hardly any pressure on the head tube and seat post. I highly recommend this rack for a hassle free strong and sturdy mountain bike rack that will protect your high performance trail bike with confidence.

2012 Jeep Wrangler

Fantastic bike mount for a Jeep Wrangler! Quick and easy install on, and removal from, the vehicle, and secure mounting of bikes as well. Not cumbersome to use and very compact when not in use. Extremely satisfied with the purchase and mount!

Packaged very well; installation was easy (my bf said); took the bikes out today for a ride. I’d recommend this bike rack for the 2018 Jeep JL Sport S. I’d happy with it!

1982 Jeep CJ-7

Needed bike rack for my 82 Jeep CJ7. Had it mounted in 15 minutes. Fits great and is secured tightly to the spare tire. Appears to be very sturdy construction. Haven't tried it out yet, but have no doubt it is just what I was looking for.

2018 Jeep Wrangler

Great products. Well made and fully assembled. Good communication and products arrived very quickly. Appreciated all the information on the website. It gave me the confidence that it would fit my vehicle.
I mounted the bike rack on a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL with back up camera with no issue. There is a tight clearance between the spare tire, and 3rd brake light but I was able to install it with the tire cover in tact. Going forward will probably put small spacers on the back of the tire mount for an extra fraction of inch clearance.
Also, the adapter was needed to level out the women bike on the rack.

Good product, but there were some hurdles that the instructions don’t really mention. Common sense will get you through though.

Service was excellent, shipped the same day I ordered (even though it was after five!)

2010 Ford Five Hundred

I love this rack! I bought it to transport my son's bike to College and it worked great. It only took about 10 minutes to mount on the back tire and was easy to secure the bike. I drove over 500 miles and hardly knew the bike was back there. I really liked the ability to still use the back door without having to remove the bike or rack!
I also have to compliment the customer service from eTrailer...fantastic!

Do the straps stay tight? It concerns me that the straps are only threaded through the buckles. I would feel more secure with ratchet-tightened straps. Did you notice any problem with straps loosening?

Joel A.

9/23/2015

They stayed tight for me. I weaved them through the frame for added security.

by:

Solid rack. Easy to attach. Bikes mount fairly close to one another. Best suited for bikes with straight top tube, mtb frames can be mounted at an angle. I needed to loosen spare to mount or unmount rack.

After one year, rack seems to be holding up well to frequent use. Stayed secure on tire throughout summer. Removed during winter and reinstalled this spring. Still happy with this purchase.

2012ToyotaRAV4

Product arrived on time and in good order. It is well made and was easy to install. We have a standard bike as well as a recumbent bike. There is not room for both bikes on the rack because of the width of the seat on the recumbent. The large diameter of the main frame made it difficult to use the rubber clamps that were supplied because of limited access, but this was easily solved with a short shock cord. Over all we are very satisfied with our purchase experience.

2006 ToyotaRAV4

I used to have a trailer hitch bike rack on a Toyota RAV4. It worked well but was difficult and messy to swing out of the way to open the door and put groceries in the back.

The Toyota died and I got a similar Honda CRV. I knew the downside of the trailer hitch so I got a roof rack bike mount. It looked awesome but was VERY difficult to get bikes on after a long ride and in the wind on non-level ground. I had to carry a step stool with me. I still scraped up the side of my car. The final disaster was I forgot the bike was still on top and backed into my covered car port. DOH!

So I looked into tire rack mounts. Both Honda and Toyota mount the spare tire off-center. Some of the brands cannot adjust for this and your bike sticks out a couple of feet on the passenger side. Some brands must be mounted to the spare tire itself and cannot have a tire cover.

The SR1 rack below has held up great the last year. It was a fraction of the price of the big name bike carriers. I leave it on 24/7/365 and take it through the car wash with no issues. I live in the sunny SW and it has survived the sun and heat. It has not slipped at all when put over the vinyl tire cover.

The only issue is you do need to supply a short bungee cord to keep the arms retracted when folded back and not in use.

This is a very high quality rack. I owned my Honda CR-V for 4 years before I discovered there was such a thing as a spare tire bike rack.I have used it once or twice a week since I bought it about a year ago and it has performed perfectly. A very solid piece of equyipment.

by:

The rack is sturdy and solid, works as advertised. Workmanship is adequate, though the attachment to the wheel is a bit DIY in appearance. Installation is OK, need to get used to routing and securing the three attachment straps and check while in use to ensure they have not loosened. This is the only rack I found that permits use on an off-center spare wheel like my Honda CR-V 1990s era

The Thule Spare Me rack, part # TH963PRO is more expensive, but its easier to use and is capable of being offset so that the bikes are centered on the rear of the vehicle. The rack is also lockable to the vehicle, and a cable lock is included to secure the bikes to the rack.

by:

Everything works well with standard wheels, even camera.

The unit arrived on schedule and as advertised. Installation instructions were easy to read and to follow. Have already hauled the bikes on it.

Very pleased both with the product and your service.

Would this work on a spare tire on a 2010 Keystone Passport Ultralight Trailer? The spare is attached to the 4 inch bumper of the trailer.

Patrick B.

6/10/2014

Spare tire carriers on trailers usually have a lesser load rating that spare tire carriers on vehicles. The Hollywood racks spare tire carrier should only be used on vehicle mounted spares. We do have a number of bike carriers that are approved for RV/Trailer use, including some around-the-spare racks. I've added a link to all of these racks.

Because of how the Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Rack # TH963PRO actually mounts to the vehicle behind the spare tire, it will not be compatible with the Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195225. For a spare tire bike rack you would need something like the Hollywood Racks # HRSR1 that mounts onto the tire itself.
