This a very nice hitch rack. Well built, lots of space, long hitch tube works very well with Jeep Wrangler JL spare tire, however, you will not be able to open the swing tailgate with the rack on. Its not a big issue as it provides a good amount of clearance to the ground. If you use this carrier with one of the hitch rack cargo bags, it really adds to the cargo capacity of the rack. I have been very happy with this rack, I also like that you can add additional tail/brake lights to the rack.

Comments
Update, Still supper happy with the carrier. It did great during hunting season hauling heavy loads. One word of caution specifically for Jeep Wrangler owners. If you run a larger tire than stock ie-35x12.50x17, like I do, the racks tubing is not long enough to make it into the hole for the hitch pin to line up. You will either need a hitch extension or another hole drilled in the tube most likely NOT recommended by the manufacturer. Still keeping the 5 star rating.
Jeff - 05/28/2020

I do not recommend drilling a hole however the Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches part # 80307 will work to extend the hitch. It does cut the tongue weight of the hitch in half so you will not want to exceed half of the tongue weight rating of your hitch.

I have used this twice on long distance trips. It has helped tremendously because my girlfriend always overpacks the SUV. Tip: IF the carrier is in short distance from your exhaust pipe air flow you may want to purchase a flame/ heat retardant blanket to protect your items. My first trip i had a new Igloo cooler on it and when I got to my destination 6 hours later, the wheels were melted to the trailer. Also you may want to add some reflective tape to it just for added safety. I would definitely recommend this Trailer.

Comments
Used it many times and I highly recommend it. I did learn a lesson on the first use. My exhaust heat melted a wheel on my Igloo Cooler that was positioned behind it. I ended up buying a heat retardant blanket to place under everything and now more cooler melt. I also added reflective decals around the trailer perimeter. This is a sturdy product and has already seen about 5000 miles of road. Getting the Trailer Hitch lock is important too. There is zero wiggle or noise when used.

The Reese cargo carrier and anti-rattle lock both arrived quickly and in perfect condition. My 14 year old son and I put the carrier together in about 15 minutes and installed it on my 2019 Toyota 4Runner. Very happy with the the quality of the carrier. It is very sturdy. We hauled (3) 5-gallon gas containers to the gas station, filled them and returned home without incident. The carrier performed as I hoped it would. This was the first of many jobs I expect this carrier to help with in the future. Although the photo may not show it, the containers were secured with heavy duty bungee cords during during our trip.

Comments
One year later and still using the Reese carrier frequently. Its holding up well and is super easy to use.

Carrier was perfect size for project I needed it for. Fits loose in receiver hitch like everything does. Like the factory mount for lights.

Comments
Carrier works good but after 1 year it has rust stains all over coming out of the bars on the sides.

First off, etrailer is great. I shopped numerous other sites and they had the best price on his cargo carrier. Second, they kept me in he loop from start to finish and had the cargo carrier delivered on the 3rd business day (maybe it was the 2nd). The cargo carrier was easy to put together. I haven't used it yet so I can't comment on that but will follow-up once I have. I do believe I will eventually order an anti wobble hitch pin though. There is quite a bit of play in my 2" receiver but maybe that won't be a factor once I have some weight on it.

Comments
Looks really nice - Im looking to get one for my Jeep too. Have you had any troubles since you wrote this review ? Did you need the anti wobble pin ? How easy is it to put it on and off, my concern is that I will need to take it on and off a lot.
-- comment by: Sam - 06/13/2014

Comments
This is for Sam. No, I have not had any problems with the cargo carrier. It is a little heavy but I can take it on and off by myself. I hang it on the wall in my garage so it stores nicely out of the way. It does wobble but it doesnt really seem to affect anything. I usually try and make sure my load is balanced.I think it is a perfect addition for the wranglers limited storage space.

This is LONG overdue! We bought this tray in 2013 for our 2010 Ford Flex (still on the road today!), along with the thick cargo bag that attaches to this tray very easily. We have used this tray EXTENSIVELY over the past 4 yrs., and prior to that for at least one long distance family vacation per year. We also got the rack to install on garage wall, so that we could easily hang the tray in the garage wall, very handy!! For the past 4 years I have been tagging along with my hubby as he has jobsite changes every 3-9 mos. This tray/bag has let me take the items I need very easily all across the country - literally. It has been in FL Summer sun, MN subzero temps, Idaho snow! It allows us to easily open the back liftgate, sometimes you have to pull the top of the bag out of the way if you have packed it full, so ALL is ACCESSIBLE. THIS IS A GREAT INVENTION and you will not be disappointed by its durability!

by:

We got this to save space in my pickup bed as it has a fleet side height locking cover. This rack will go on behind my tow behind trailer. I haven't used it yet but its size and weight capacity looks good along with its construction and durability of materials. I would not however put this on the back of a trailer with a camera on it which I have.

Solid carrier with plenty of room! Wow, I put this carrier to the test on a 1,600 mile road trip with our 2007 Toyota Highlander and was not disappointed. Plenty of room to store luggage for a family of four plus a load of Christmas presents. We kept everything secure and dry with the etrailer.com 20-cubic foot cargo bag and kept side movement to practically nil with the anti-rattle hitch pin. All around, the whole set up was rock solid and looked great! I highly recommend the light kit as well. With the cargo bag fully maxed out, the Highlander's taillights were blocked. And since we do a fair amount of driving at night I also added some reflective tape all around the top bar to give not only the sides some visibility, but also the back to get the attention of those not-so-attentive drivers behind me. Lastly, the kit was easy to put together; it came with spacers but I did not need them to obtain a flush assembly; the separation problem some have reported during assembly was avoided by torquing down the bolts around the nameplates before the main bar bolts, just as others have reported to have worked for them.

How did you mount the license plate to the carrier?
-- comment by: Bob D - 11/30/2012

It looks like he might have used some self tapping screws to secure it to the railing, but I am not sure. I can send an email to him so he can come back and respond.

-- Etrailer Expert Patrick B - 12/3/2012

Comments
@ Bob - I drilled two holes to accomodate the standard bolt size used to mount the license plate to the car and then used nuts to secure the assembly. As a side note, two years later the carrier is holding up well. Have used it numerous times for short and long hauls and even my neighbors are borrowing it :-

Thanks Ray... I dont like self taping screws, taking them in and out will eventually mess up. Your idea of through bolting the plate is what I was going to do, but I was concerned about weakening the structure. Glad to see this is not an issue with you two years later.... C-Ya! BfD

I bought this carrier rack as the base unit for a generator box that I installed on the back of my travel trailer. It worked perfectly, and I've been using it for almost a year with no issues other than instant rust on the lower parts of the frame the first time it rained. A can of rust inhibiting spray paint took care of that issue. I did a ton of online research and chose this model because it actually has a large distance between the hitch receiver and the carrier and I needed it to stick out far enough to clear the spare tire. This model also has about a 4 inch rise between the hitch and the carrier which helps prevent it from dragging on the ground when going over gullies and steep driveways and such. This was the only one I found that didn't sit straight out from the hitch. The carrier itself is quite robust. It was easy to assemble, and I installed the LED light kit (super easy to install) and added some reflective tape for additional visibility. It is a bit heavy and awkward for one person to install on a vehicle, but I managed to do it and an "anti-rattle" hitch pin (also purchased from etrailer) took care of the sway. I didn't worry about the up and down movement because I bolted a metal box inside to carry 2 portable generators and the weight seems to keep it pretty stable. I've attached a couple of photos... please note that my trailer is backed up against a 6 inch retaining wall, so the rack is 6 inches closer to the ground than it is when I'm driving.

Received shipment in timely fashion. When assembling I noticed the platform posts that are supposes to slid in opposite platform were bent and prevented assembly until I had to straighten them with hammer, so minor set back. Total assembly 10 minutes. When installed on hitch it does have a little wiggle room, probably 1" each way. Suggest wedging a shim into hitch if it bothers you. On initial use I hauled 20 bags of mulch and all well. Yet to install light kit and not sure I will as anything I haul will not interfere with vehicle lighting. Recommend this product.

We used this cargo carrier for a cross-country trip from South Texas to Indiana, then across Michigan (lower and upper peninsulas), then back south toward home. I wired a light harness onto it (standard ovals; fit perfectly) and that took care of any gear that covered my tail lights. The cargo carrier gave me no issues, gripes or complaints and handled the load very well. It was perfect for our Toyota Sienna.

Worked perfectly and gave us the extra space we didn't have in our vehicle. It was easy to assemble and is well balanced on the hitch. It has handled everything that we have strapped to it.

Ordered this cargo carrier, extra large bag and light kit. Shipping was extremely fast; arrived in less that 4 days. Easy to assemble, I did however run to my local hardware store and got extra heavy duty washers to be sure all was nice and snug when assembled. The cargo carrier assembly was as easy as described; however no matter how I put in the lights, the plug wire was not long enough. Bought a $4 extender at Walmart. Be sure to put the rubber grommets in first, then put the lens in !!! Packed 3 large suitcases, 2 large duffel bags, smaller bags and still had room!! We did a 800 mile round trip to the beach, ran through some terrible rain storms, but everything stayed bone dry inside the cargo bag. Great product, fast shipping; wish I would have bought this long ago.

Thank you for the picture of bag! What is the brand and model of the extra large bag?

The bag in Todds photo is the the etrailer.com Extra Large Cargo Bag, part 988501. 54 inches long, 24 inches wide, and 24 inches tall. It is designed to fit the largest cargo carriers like the Pro Series carrier that Todd is using it with. Check the link:

Product arrived in good order. Although assembly time was longer than advertised, assembly was simple and straightforward. A little concern about the strength and possible cantilever, but the generator fits with plenty of room for fuel cans and other materials. Eager to give it a road test.

I bought one of these racks 2 years ago to take to the beach. Three trips to the beach and many trips camping, and to the home improvement store an this rack rocks! I just purchased a second one as a gift to a friend that goes to the beach with us (we take a lot of stuff). The 500 pound rating is no joke as I've had close to that on it several times. If my picture comes through you will see it loaded for the beach with an inflatable dinghy, outboard, gas can, water trampoline, fishing gear, chairs, beach toys, inflatable kayak, and more. This trip had to have 400 pounds on the rack.

I have three pics of our new cargo carrier that we bought from you. Also the light kit and cargo netting. The cargo carrier went very good. I did have to buy a hitch adapter, which i have a pic of because the cargo carrier was a 2" and i have a 1 and 1/2 inch reciever. As you can see we do not travel lightly.

My wife and I spend the winters in southern GA and needed a cargo carrier as we make our move between TN and GA. Everything we pack will fit into the car with ease, but we're a tad cramped. When I say we, I mean our dog and two cats. :) Having the cargo carrier will allow us to pack our clothes, etc. outside the car while everyone has more room inside the car. On this particular hitch (Curt Class III), I can haul 300lbs back there. The three containers you see in the pics will probably be full, but not weigh anywhere near 300lbs total. This will definitely make our travel more comfortable. It also alleviated the need for a larger car where the bigger volume of cargo space would only get used a couple of times per year. Smaller car for a daily drive equals less gas. The cargo carrier is a bit on the cumbersome side so my wife helps me get it connected. It's heavy duty and expect it to last many years.

After extensive research on hitch shelves I chose this product. It arrived and did not disappoint. We will be using it for our travels in our Roadtrek Popular. We carry so much stuff that the inside gets overcrowded. This will help tremendously in our travels. It is a strong and solid product which we hope to enjoy for many years. etrailer's website made ordering easy, the price was excellent and the product arrived in a timely fashion. Would definitely recommend them and the product.

We have used the sled I was corrected by my son because I called it a shelf often in our travels. It has never disappointed us. Anyone who has a small camper would benefit from using this product. It kept all of the extra supplies out of the camper so there was room to move around. Definitely reccomend it.

Etrailer once again provided great customer service by expediting my shipment and by reviewing some photos of the assembled product to answer my questions. The cargo carrier assembled pretty quickly and easily. I bought it to use with hauling things like my lawn mower for service. The pictures will show how that worked out, which was great. I know that I will find some additional uses like moving and hauling bulk items.

Installed this with the reese front hitch on my 1999 2wd tahoe. While pulling the camper I use it to haul my moped or my cooler, instead of putting the cooler on the roof! Hitch and all went up in less than an hour.

Well designed cargo carrier! I own a jeep liberty with a tire on the back. I have hunted for the perfect hitch cargo carrier that has a good sized platform, doesn't scrape the ground when driving up inclines and isn't extremely heavy. This one is it! The hitch leave roughly 1/4" gap between the tire and basket so its a nice tight fit and doesn't stick to far out. It elevates upward from the hitch so I don't need to worry about hitting the ground on inclines. The sides are good for keeping everything in place and piece of mind. One downfall is that I can't open the back on the liberty because of the tire. I can open the glass through. Overall highly recommended carrier!

Fast free shipping, and Great customer experience. Ordering the right hitch is tough. I got the right fit, wrong hitch, the first time. I called the etrailer CE team and they fixed me up with a new and had it there in less than one week. Full refund, no hassel. I'm only out 40$ for shipping, but that's pretty good price considering it is a super heavy item.

  • How Much Weight Can Be Loaded in Cargo Carrier on 2015 Wrangler Unlimited w/ Class III Hitch
If the hitch in on your Wrangler Unlimited has a 350 lb tongue weight capacity, it means that no more than 350 lbs can be safely suspended from the receiver. The weight of the carrier would be included in that 350 lb figure. If the carrier is used with an extender like part # HES6, the tongue weight capacity of the hitch would be reduced by 50 percent. The further the load is moved away from the receiver, the more leverage is exerted. If this leverage becomes too great, the hitch receiver...

  • Inside Dimensions for Pro Series Cargo Carrier # 63153
The Pro Series Cargo Carrier # 63153 referenced in your question features inside (usable) dimensions of 60 inches long, 24 inches wide, and 5-1/2 inches tall. As long as your generator is less than 24 inches wide, this carrier will work perfectly. Its outside dimensions are 61-1/2 inches long, 25-1/2 inches wide, and 5-1/2 inches tall. It has a weight capacity of 500 pounds, but you will also want to check the tongue weight capacity of your trailer hitch and vehicle, as you will need to...

  • Recommendation To Relocate License Plate When Using Tow Ready Hitch Cargo Carrier, # 63153
On the Tow Ready Hitch Cargo Carrier, # 63153, the license plate can be mounted to the back of the cargo carrier by drilling two holes of 1/4 inch or less and attaching the plate with two screws. I also have a Optronics License Plate Holder, # LP35BB, that you could use. It mounts by one screw in the center and then the license plate attaches to the holder. If you have the Optional Light Kit, # 20174, on your cargo carrier you could use the Optronics License Plate Light And Bracket,...

  • Factors that Contribute to Exhaust Melting Hitch Cargo Carrier
Exhaust melting cargo on a cargo carrier isn't a super common problem, but we are aware that it does happen on occasion. Especially if the cargo carrier is at the same height as the exhaust, relatively close to it, and/or the material in the carrier is susceptible to melting. Other factors to consider are the size of the engine, climate, and road conditions. Engines are basically big air pumps. The bigger the motor the more hot air is pumped out of it. Hotter climates will also allow...

  • Recommended Hitch Mounted Cargo Carriers With Shank Rise
We offer several hitch mounted cargo carriers that may work for you. The carriers we offer vary in the shank rise and size so I will recommend a couple that you may want to check out. One of the carriers I recommend is the Pro Series cargo Carrier, part # 63153. This fits 2 inch receiver openings and measures 24 x 60 inches with 5-1/2 inch high side rails. This carrier has a shank rise of 2-1/2 inches. I have attached a product review video you can take a look at. Another carrier...

  • Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2012 Ford F-150 With Minimum Tailgate Interference
Hitch mount cargo carriers were certainly not designed to be used as a step, but I will admit that I have used a cargo carrier to climb into the back of a truck before. The weight capacity should not be an issue since each of the cargo carriers you mentioned have a weight capacity of 500 lbs, but the wobble could make the step uneasy if you do not step directly in the center of the cargo carrier. You should also keep in mind that the floor of the cargo carrier is metal and moisture could...

  • Ground Clearance Difference for Pro Series # 63153 and Curt # C18130 Cargo Carriers on 2008 Sienna
Both the Pro Series # 63153 and Curt # C18130 cargo carriers have an angled shank to provide better ground clearance than straight-shank types. The Pro Series has 2-1/2-inches of rise in the shank while the Curt has 3 inches of rise. Also the Curt carrier has the ability to adjust the placement of the carrier basket on the shank and includes the required hitch pin and clip, while the Pro Series does not. You can use part # PC3 or a locking anti-rattle hitch pin such as # 63232. The Pro...

  • Can Hitch Mounted Bike Racks be Added to Hitch Mounted Cargo Carriers to Carry Bikes and Cargo Items
We do have some options that will allow you to carry cargo and bikes on your 2012 Toyota Highlander, however, bike racks should not be mounted to a hitch mounted cargo carrier. The opening that you see on this cargo carrier is simply a hollow tube, not a receiver. Adding a bike rack to a hitch mounted cargo carrier would place too much weight too far back from the trailer hitch. This will create additional stress that the trailer hitch and your vehicle frame cannot support. It is similar...

  • How To Install License Plate And Light Kit On The Pro Series Hitch Cargo Carrier # 63153
On the Pro Series Hitch Cargo Carrier, part # 63153, you can use the Optional Light Kit, part # 20174. This light kit will install on the Pro Series cargo carrier and plug into a 4-flat connector on your vehicle. This will give you operating taillights on the back of your cargo carrier. To mount your license plate on your vehicle and illuminate it I would recommend using either the Optronics License-Plate Light w/ Mounting Bracket, part # LP55CB, or the Peterson License Plate Light with...

  • License Plate Mounting Bracket With LED Light for a Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier
One license plate bracket with an LED light that may work for you is the Optronics LED Trailer License Plate Light with Mounting Bracket, # LPL55CB. At this time there are no license plate brackets with lights that are specifically designed to work with hitch mounted cargo carriers, but this bracket provides attachment points for a license plate. You will just want to find a way to attach the bracket to the cargo carrier. In most cases, the bracket is screwed directly to the top rail...

  • Hitch Cargo Carrier, Lighting Kit, Cargo Net and Wiring for 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon
We can help you get your 2017 Subaru Outback ready for some cargo hauling using its factory-installed 1-1/4-inch hitch. The cargo carrier you referenced, the Pro Series # 63153, only fits a larger 2-inch size hitch but we have similar carriers you can use in your 1-1/4-inch OEM hitch, such as their model # 63155. Do note though that those factory Subaru hitches do not have the same weight carrying capacity as the 2-inch aftermarket hitches we offer that can bolt right up to the car's...
