Note: This dual-arm rack reduces the need for a bike frame adapter bar (sold separately) to mount a children's, women's, or alternative frame bicycle. However, to mount certain bikes or to keep your bike level on the rack, a bike adapter bar may be required. Most step-through bikes, dual-suspension bikes, and small children's bikes will require a bike adapter bar.

Thule 2-Bike Rack for OEM rear-mounted spare tires

The Thule Spare Me is a great way to utilize your vehicle's spare tire to carry up to 2 bikes. The rack easily attaches to most rear-mounted spare tires with a mounting plate and hand knob, and it's built of durable materials - powder coated steel and weather-resistant, injection-molded nylon.

Versatile Rack Fits Most Spare Tires

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack mounting plate

The Spare Me bike rack installs on your spare tire mount with a plate and bracket. The mounting plate fits over the lug nuts of your spare tire, and the bracket extends from the plate through your spare tire's pilot hole to provide an attachment point for the rack. You can position this plate at 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock, depending on your spare tire's lug nut pattern.

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack long and short mounting plates

The rack comes with the short mounting bracket installed. For larger tires, you can swap out the short mounting bracket for the long mounting bracket.

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack standoff extensions

To fine-tune the fit of the bike rack on your spare tire, a long standoff extension and short standoff extension are included. Use the appropriate combination of a mounting bracket and standoff extension to ensure that there is at least a 1/2" overlap between the mounting bracket and the square post of the mounting plate. To help determine the appropriate configuration of mounting brackets and standoff extensions for your tire size, see the table below.

Tire Size

Adapter/Bracket To Use

P195 - P235Short Mounting Bracket
P235 - P275, 31", 32"Long Mounting Bracket and Short Standoff
P285, 12.5, 33"Long Mounting Bracket and Long Standoff

Adjustable for Offset Spare Tires

Thue Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack adjusted for offset spares

The Spare Me can be adjusted to center your bikes on a vehicle with an offset spare tire. If your spare is offset, remove the bolts that hold the rack to the mounting bracket. Reposition the bracket 4" to the left or 4" to the right - depending on your offset - and reattach the bracket to the rack using the existing holes on the rack.

Locking Hand Knob and Cable Lock

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack locking hand knob

The bike rack secures to the mounting plate with a hand knob and threaded bolt. The hand knob includes a One-Key System lock for securing the rack to your vehicle.

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack cable lock

A built-in cable lock secures your bikes to the rack. The cable deploys from the arm and locks to a second cable built into the upright arm of the rack on the same side. The cable lock and receptacle store inside the arms when not in use.

Thule One-Key System convenience

The One-Key System cylinders can be swapped out if you own other Thule products and want to use the same key to lock them all.

Anti-Sway Cradles

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack Stay-Put anti-sway cradles

Stay-Put cradles with anti-sway cages hold your bikes firmly in place on the rack. The cradles and straps are made of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), a stretchy, gel-like substance that absorbs road shock and minimizes vibration to reduce the stress of travel on your bike frames. The nylon anti-sway cages provide a third point of contact that prevents sway and bike-to-bike contact.

Folding Dual Arms

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack folding dual arms

The rack's dual arms provide great bike support and stability. They fold down for garage parking clearance and for storage. Simply loosen the knobs, push down on the arms until they snap into place, then tighten the knobs again. The knobs and the side plates are made from durable, weather-resistant, injection-molded nylon.

Safety Straps

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack bike stabilizing strap

The bike rack comes with a load strap for securing handlebars and bike wheels during transport.

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack oversize spare tire anchor strap

There is also a safety strap included for when you're using the rack on an oversize spare tire (P235 or above). This strap wraps around the top and bottom tubes of the rack and is tightened with a metal cam buckle.

Rubber Spacers

Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted bike rack rubber spacers

Rubber spacers on the bike rack frame stabilize it against your spare tire, helping to prevent the bike rack from shifting during transport. These spacers also guard your spare against damage caused by the bike rack rubbing against the tire.

The Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Rack is amazing! The shipment arrived in it’s original Thule box in great condition. All parts and instructions were intact. Very happy with my purchase. 870687

The bike rack is nice a secure. No rattling even when trekking over 200 mile trips. We were concerned with two bikes weighing a combined 60 lbs , but the racks well built. If you don’t have a hitch and want to keep bugs off your bike by avoiding the roof this rack is ideal. 867569

The product arrived within a few days. It was easy to install and works as advertised. One of the main reasons I purchased this model was from reading the product reviews and being confident it would fit my 2009 RAV4. Solid product from Thule. Holds 2 bikes easily and without movement or vibration. Can open my back door though not supposed to actually. Really great product. 670314

We ordered this rack to carry our Mountain bikes on our 4 wheel drive. It fit nicely over the spare with little fuss. Instructions were not all that good so we watched the video here at etrailer.com which answered our questions. In the end we couldn't get our bikes to fit the rack and requested a return. They handled the return easily with no problem and issued the refund. Good company. 636402

etrailer service was attentive and blindingly rapid. The Thule spare me 2 installed relatively easily - the hardest part being the lock core installations, I'm not sure why that task isn't completed at the factory. The bike carrier is designed to stay installed when not in use, it is compact and folds neatly. It allows me to open my tailgate fully with a bike on the rack. The rack provides locking facilities. These are the main reasons I selected the bike rack. Another reason is more personal - I am able to load the rack in my garage with ample room to walk easily all the way around my jeep without opening the garage door. That's huge. The unit appears to be sturdy enough. I haven't had a chance to transport with it yet but I will this weekend. 504096

etrailer are a great company to work with, excellent customer service. I've bought a couple things from them, the latest being a Thule bike carrier. It's a Thule so it's robust and does exactly what it's meant to. Unfortunately, when it arrived the box looked a little beat up. Inside I noticed some minor damage to the frame (tiny little dent in frame) Nothing that would compromise use but thought I'd let them know. Got an immediate response apologizing for inconvenience and letting me know brand new one had been shipped. I print off a pre paid label and have UPS pick up the damaged one. Few days later replacement arrives double boxed for protection. 499293

Great product. So glad I chose this one instead of one of the other types I'd seen around town. Didn't like the design of the ones that fit into the trailer hitches or on the roof. Found this one online and called to order. Steve (I think it was Steve) was extremely helpful and suggested the Swagman adapter which is worth its weight also. Totally satisfied with it and enjoying it every chance we get. 491144

Were still enjoying it very much and very glad I chose this particular Thule model. It is definitely one of the things that is helping keep us young !

Super fast (2 day) shipment and delivery of the Thule Spare Me (Spare Tire) bike rack for my grandson's Jeep Wrangler from etrailer.com. The instructions were very straightforward and helpful in getting the bike rack put together and placed on the Jeep. The Thule materials which comprise the rack were also first rate (light but very sturdy). I am very pleased with my experience with etrailer.com and intend to do more business with this fine seller. Because of your quick delivery of the bike rack (along with its ease of assembly on the spare tire), I will now be able to drive my grandson's jeep this week out to him in Los Angeles where he is stationed with the U.S. Coast Guard. Thank you very much for making this all possible. 486374

- TH963PRO

This bike rack is great for both my mountain bike and road bike. I use it on my 2017 Jeep Wrangler-fits nicely on the rear spare tire, very low profile when stored, so adds no length to the rig. Super easy and quick to deploy and mount my bike, takes less than a minute to toss my bike on it and head to the trails. Slim and light but very sturdy and stable. Holds 2 bikes when needed- sometimes a buddy needs a lift home with a flat and we throw his bike on and get him home too. Great product. 473416

2011 Toyota RAV4

This bike rack works great. Took my bike on a cross country road trip from Tampa, Florida to Whistler, British Columbia and back with no issues. There was no slipping or excessive shaking with highway speeds up to 80ish mph. Encountered 105 degree heat, rain squalls and snow storms with no issues. No problems with the set up and the fact that the rear spare tire on my 2011 Toyota Rav4 is off center was not an issue as the rack can accommodate for this. It's a well made product from a reputable company. Make sure to read the directions as they advise against opening the rear hatch with the bike on the rack due to weight concerns. Shipping was quick as were replies to questions to customer service. Follow up correspondence from etrailer was also appreciated. Overall great experience, would highly recommend the product as well as etrailer. Thanks! 464529

Thanks for the follow up! The bike rack continues to work great. It survived another cross-country trip this year. Hope you guys had a successful holiday season.

  • Troubleshooting Thule Spare Me Bike Rack that Won't Fit RAV4 Due to Spare Tire Flange
Sounds like you have the original version of the Thule Spare Me, part # TH963, which won't fit on your RAV4 because of the protruding flange on your spare tire mounting plate. The later versions of the Spare Me, TH963XT, TH963XTR and the current version, # TH963PRO provide a redesigned mounting plate that allow the rack to fit.. Thule redesigned that # 753-3532 mounting plate so it will fit your RAV4, so if you get the new mounting plate, it will allow you to use your rack on your 2012 RAV4.

  • Will the Thule Spare Me TH963PRO fit a 2004 Toyota Rav4
It might depend on how much earlier the answer came from the Rep. Not too long ago Thule re-designed the Spare Me rack. Formerly it was part TH963, after the re-design it became part TH963PRO. • What is the Difference Between the Thule Spare Me XTR and PRO Spare Tire Mount Bike Carriers
What you have here are different generations of the same bike carrier, in this case the Thule Spare Me. The newest version is going to be the Pro, # TH963PRO. The previous generation was the XTR and it is no longer being made. So by all accounts the PRO is the better one since it is the newest and most up to date. For Thule part numbers start out usually just a number. Then the next generation will get an XT added on, followed by an XTR, and then a PRO as they make minor changes and...

  • Is There an Adapter Needed to Use the Thule Spare Me with Mountain Bikes
The Thule Spare Me # TH963PRO doesn't require any adapter for mountain bikes. The only adapter you need is a frame adapter bar like the Kuat Ubar # UB01. This is used to create the horizontal top cross tube on bikes that don't have one like a women's bike. It creates the contact point for a hanging rack and helps keep a bike level.

  • Thule SpareMe Knob Doesn't Tighten Down All the Way on a 2012 Toyota RAV4 Spare Tire
The problem that you are having with the Thule spare tire mount bike rack # TH963PRO is a result of the standoff extensions. If you were not using them the bolt would be able to thread all the way in the mount that attaches to your 2012 Toyota RAV4. But if you are using one of those standoffs the bolt can only thread so far into the standoff since it isn't hollow. You likely do not have to use either standoff. But if you find that you do you can use the best combination of standoffs...

  • How to Remove and Reinstall Anti-sway Cradles on a Thule Spare Me Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack
The anti-sway cradles on the Thule Spare Me bike rack, # TH963PRO, do need to be positioned a certain way, but there is not a left or right. I have made short video that shows how to remove and reinstall the anti-sway cradles on the rack for you.

  • Will Thule Spare Me 2 Spare Tire Bike Carrier Hold Full Suspension Bikes on a 2005 Honda CR-V
The Thule Spare Me spare tire mount bike carrier # TH963PRO is a fit for your 2005 Honda CR-V and you can load the full suspension bikes but you will likely need adapter bars such as # 64005 to be able to load them. This is going to be the case with any hanging style bike carrier and bikes with dual suspension. To keep plenty of distance between the bikes and the trailer you might be able to use a longer ball mount if you have a Class III trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver opening....

  • Can a Hitch for a Bike Rack be Installed on the Back of a 2014 Rockwood Freedom 2280BH Tent Trailer
There are only certain bike racks that are rated for use on the back of a trailer but the Hollywood Racks Traveler # HR9200 is not one of them. The issue is the ride at the back of a trailer is more harsh than at the back of a vehicle and not all bike racks are built to withstand the forces involved. I have included a link to the bike racks that are rated for this application but they top out at 4 bikes. You could install a hitch such as # 13703 which is the most versatile but you would...

  • How Does the Lock Knob of the Thule Spare Me TH963PRO Work
The lock of the knob on the Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Rack # TH963PRO is designed to either allow you to actually loosen it (unlocked), or it will just spin freely (locked). What you described as locked down is actually unlocked. With it in the position spin the know counter-clockwise and it will release. Around the 1:35 mark of the video I attached the lock system is described.
