It fits dual arm racks with one inch diameter arms, so if we take a measurement of the diameter of the opening right here, you can see that that's going to measure one inch in diameter. I bought these to replace the Velcro hold downs that came with the bike rack. Simple. Should be a big improvement 609123

I am very satisfied with my purchase from etrailer.com, it was a great price. There are other products available which I am delighted to know about. 580738

Has worked well for most bikes we have. It doesn't hold bikes with a very wide tube frame without extra straps. 580362

The old cradles on my hitch rack were worn and loose and the straps had disintegrated. New cradles and straps seemed preferable to buying a new rack as they have become very pricey. I am very pleased with the new cradles from etrailer as they appear to be much more robust than the old sets that came with my rack. They shipped quickly and I definitely would do business with etrailer again. 373600

I have a Bell bike carrier that I have been using for years. The red rubber brackets dry rotted out one by one. The rack and straps are still going strong so I didn't want to buy a new rack. I found these replacement brackets here on Etrailer and ordered a set to see if it would work. My bars are 1" which is what these brackets are listed size wise. I had a really hard time getting them on there. They didn't slide on as easily as I thought they would. After a little cooking oil and some elbow grease, I managed to spin them on to the position I needed. I would definitely order some more and probably will. Beats buying a whole new rack. 568355

my problem was finding replacenent cradles for a bell hitch style bike rake. the old cradles were starting to crack and disintegrate. after talking with george, i choose this item to replace them. there are four cradles on the rack, but only two were completely broken. i gave it the 4 rating as i/we have not taken the bike rack out yet so i cannot comment on how well it works/does not work. they were not difficult to get onto the rack and seem to be holding tightly in place. if they work i will likely replace the remaining two cradles. 191841

I bought these and hope they would fit after a few reviews that I read regarding bell bike racks. I wasn't able to find anything anywhere and came across this site. I had bought a bell bike rack from a friend and the red cradles were all damaged. So I bought 2 pack of 2 to replace all 4 and installed them the same day I got in the mail! I used dish soap to get them on and then I would suggest a long rod to use like a hammer between the rubber and the bar to get them to go down I had no trouble at all and can't wait to use the rack now and see how long they hold up! 413359

I put these on an old bell rack I had that the previous cradles had rotted out. Had these on a year with no issues of rot and rubber is still supple. They are a bit stiff to put on, other reviewers stated they used some type of grease to get to slide down tube, which is what I had to do as well. A lightweight hammer and a 11/2" pipe will do the trick. For the price they are great 261378

I have an Outback cycle rack that is over 10 years old now. The straps finally broker a few weeks ago so I thought it was about time to upgrade to a more modern rack. When I considered the cost of upgrading however I decided to replace the straps and came across etrailers HR740-P. While the HR740-P's were a snug fit on old rack bars and needed lubricanting plus some help from a hammer in order to complete installation they held both our bikes perfectly, actually better than the old cradles. Having cost around $35 or roughly $3-400 less than a replacement rack I would recommend trying this route before splashing out on a new rack. 500006

It is a pleasure to write this review. The parts for my bike carrier arrived within three days of ordering. I am using them on a bike carrier with a 1 inch diameter support and they fit perfect. Following suggestions from other comments, I used a little silicon spray to be able to force them to the right positions. Will keep this site in mind for future orders. Thanks! I believe in repairing when I can to help save the planet. 375251

I about freaked out when I saw the price of bike racks! OMG! pricey?!!! I get it, if you have an EXPENSIVE BIKE, but for us HACKERS....??? SOOOO....off to that discount hardware store, my go to place for stuff I only use once in a while. $38 bucks for a two bike rack. The "cradles were really soft rubber, screwed to the arms(in the wrong positions, with almost worthless velcro straps....Guaranteed to pull loose or break on first use...Yup the guarantee worked. First strap broke, even being careful. So...off to etrailer to see if maybe they had a replacement cradle that wouldn't "break the bank". I don't know why I said "maybe" because these guys have a ton of stuff! I always check with etrailer, cuz I never know what I'll find. AND....hold on to your....???? THEY actually BELIEVE in customer service!!!! What a concept! I've called a number of times looking for whatever and if they don't have it, they actually will give suggestions of where to try! What are they thinking? Looking for a repeat customer??? ANYWAY, found what I was looking for, but still a skeptic. The cradles are really snug to get on(spray silicone worked fine) and fit my 1"arms perfectly. After the silicone dried the cradles stayed put. Nice composite type stuff with some flex and the straps are heavy enough to take some wear. We'll see after the ARIZONA sun cooks them, how they last. Perfect fit, nice quality, FAST service, AND GREAT PRICE! What's not to like? Make check out to "Big Blowhard LLC" (kidding) 508209

A couple of years ago I bought and inexpensive hitch rack to carry my road and mtb for short distances of a few miles. Didn't use it very often as I have a Suburban so really only used it about six times. Worked alright but I wasn't a big fan of the velcro loops that held the bike(s) but it seemed to work okay. I was going on a long trip out of state and needed to take the bikes on the rack. I was very concerned about the cheap velcro and rubber retainers holding up over the road for 1000 miles each way. Last thing I wanted to have happen was my $1200 to become roadkill because of a cheap strap. Needless to say I was pretty sure that I wouldn't find anything of use by Googling the manufacturer, so I decided I would just see what was out there. I ran across the etrailer site and found these cradles. Based just on the specs I thought they would probably work. And for about $10 a set they were a bargain. So I ordered two sets. I was interested to see how well they worked when the arrived. They fit my rack perfectly. There is an allen bolt to tighten them up on the rack arms so they don't slide around. The rubber strap is more than enough to hold even some weighty bikes. Not cheap junk here, these are quality cradles. Just by adding these I've transformed my cheap rack for getting around town to one that I have no concerns about taking long distance. Service from etrailer was great. They shipped very fast, sent my an email with tracking and the order arrived in under a week. That's without expedited shipping, just the low cost option. I couldn't be more satisfied and would be more than happy to recommend them to anyone looking for bike rack parts. And probably other things they sell as well. I know that I'll keep them in mind if I need anything else. 277021

The replacementupgrade cradles are just as excellent a product today as they were a year ago. I have had zero issues with them since I installed them. I couldnt ask for a better part for my hitch rack.I would not hesitate to purchase them again or recommend them to a friend.

I purchased these for my inexpensive Advantage 2-bike rack, which has served for several years quite well...except for the cradles. Two of the four original cradles split in half. Many reviewers pointed out the very tight fit and difficulty installing. Using the following technique, pointed out by a number of reviews, I found them to install with little difficulty: 1. Remove the end caps of the rack arms. 2. Slather the arms and the interior of the new cradle with liquid DW detergent. 3. Manually force the first 1/8" of the cradle onto the arm. This does require some twisting and effort, but I felt the front of the arm kind of "snap" into the cradle opening when it was properly aligned. 4. Use a small finish hammer to tap the cradle onto the arm until the arm is flush with with the outside edge of the cradle hole. 5. At this point, the hammer tapping was difficult as I could not longer tap on the entire face of the cradle. I used a very large pair of adjustable pliers to grip the main body of the cradle and simply rotated the cradle back and forth while applying pressure to move the cradle as far as needed onto the arm. With all the detergent on there, it moved quite readily. I am very pleased with these cradles and straps, as they are more substantial than the originals, and should last a great deal longer! 434844

The product is just what we are looking for but we are having trouble getting a correct fit for our carrier. Our carrier is "homemade" and the bars are between the sizes offered. We need about a 1 1/8 inch. The quality is excellent, sturdy and well made. I would recommend these but they just didn't fit our carrier. Customer Service is top notch, very prompt responses and courteous. 603048

The bike rack cradles arrived quickly and were easy to install on the bike rack with a little WD40. They are much better than the Velcro straps that came with the bike rack. The tandem bike will be more secure with these cradles and rubber straps. 498827

These worked out great I slid them over a Thule trunk rack with straight bars. I didn't want my bikes banging together which would have been unavoidable with out these. I bought 2 sets one to secure each bike. They were tight going on, a good thing now because they stay where I want them. I've had them on for almost a year and they haven't split or cracked. I would recommend them if you have a similar situation. 489727

Great Product. Great price. Hard to put on but worth the effort. 489384

Heres a little trick for making the installation of new cradles much easier.Spray some cheap aerosol hairspray on the bar next to the old cradle. If you pull and twist at the same time, youll be able to get the old cradle off easily. Slide the new cradle on while the hairspray is still wet. Once the hairspray dries, it gets tacky and will prevent the cradles from moving around.

After reading the reviews about some problems installing the cradles, I soaked them in hot soapy water to make them a little more pliable, and then coated the insides and the bar with dish soap. Went on pretty easy. We have not used the carrier to transport bikes since we installed the new cradles, so I cannot rate how well they work but they seem very sturdy and the straps should secure the bikes well. 482494

Installed product today. Could have used a suggestion (or a special tool like a pvc driving tube 12" long) from the distributor or mfr, but had to figure out for myself, how to push the cradles onto my 1" bike carrier tubes. Finally found a jack handle extension (tube), and pounded the cradles with extension tube, and and a rubber mallet. until the rubber cradles were in proper positions. 476400

Comments

Thanks for the follow up Gerald. I am glad that you got this one figured out, but it might be helpful for your next project to use a little hairspray. It will be slippery and help the cradles slide on, and then as it gets dry it will be sticky and tacky and will help hold the cradles in place.

Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase. We took the bikes on a long (1300+ mile) roadtrip last summer & they were very stable. The only minus is that one of the cradles tends to move for some reason. 473561

Comments

Heres a little trick to prevent the cradles from moving. Move the cradle out of position by about an inch to an inch and a half. Spray the bar with aerosol hair spray, then slide the cradle into place. Hair spray acts like a lubricant when its wet, but once it dries it becomes sticky and will keep the cradle in place.
