Roof Rack, Basket, and Cargo Bag Recommendations for 2018 Volvo XC90

Updated 09/28/2025 | Published 07/27/2020

Question:

Hi, I live in NYC and park my Volvo XC90 in a garage. My garage has a height restriction of 6 ft 8 inches - so I cannot install a roof box. I also have a moonroof so cannot place a roof bag on top. I am hoping to find a lightweight and easy to take on off roof basket and then secure a roof bag on top of that. Do you have a recomendation for this i.e. lightweight roof basket that is easy to install and remove and can hold a roof bag - Probably the Thule Interstat or Thule Outbound.

For your application I recommend using the Thule WingBar Evo roof rack system with the Small Inno Roof Deck Platform Rack # INA510 and the Thule Interstate Cargo Bag # TH869. I've personally installed the Inno Roof Deck Platform Rack a number of times (see attached on a 2017 Nissan Titan) and it is pretty light (28.7 lbs) plus it is very easy to install. When it comes to your Thule roof rack the parts will vary depending on if your 2018 Volvo XC90 has the raised or flush rails:

Raised Rails
53" WingBar Evo Crossbars - Black # TH711420 or Silver # TH711400
Evo Raised Rail Feet - # TH710401

Flush Rails
53" WingBar Evo Crossbars - Black # TH711420 or Silver # TH711400
Evo Flush Rail Feet - # TH710601
Fit Kit - # TH186028

I've attached some review videos for you to check out. This whole setup should add about 8" to the height of your rails - this is not including the cargo bag.

John. I see the recommendation for using the INA510 platform with the Thule Wingbar EVos ... I have the Wingbar Evos and just bought the INA510 but it does not look like the clamps will close fully / securely around the bar. Can you provide some guidance?

@Robert When you say fully close are you talking about the ends of the claws touching each other? Or do you mean you can't even tighten it down enough for the platform to stop wiggling on top of the crossbars?

@JonG - The clamps do not look like they fully wrap around the Wngbar Evo like in the directions. For instance the back clamp is further under the Wingbar EVO than the front clamp (as you know the thickness on the front side of the bars is greater than the back). I can push the locking mechanism down and it does not seem to move just worried about it wiggling free at some point or something. I know this is hard to describe in words. Do you think it is safe as is? Should I find an alternative mounting option like the T-Slot? Would like your expert opinion on this. If that is how the clamps are supposed to fit around the Wingbar Evo then I guess that is OK. Just concerned about it coming loose.

@Robert I completely get it! I've installed this platform rack a handful of times and I don't think I've ever once gotten it to clamp down enough that the claws are touching or fully encircling the crossbars. As long as it's snugged up enough that nothing moves around you'll be good to go. You should be able to install everything and have it tight enough that you can literally shake your vehicle via the platform rack. If you're still a little nervous then you can definitely go with the T-Slot Kit # INBRP12, but from what you're describing, I don't think you're going to need it.
