Hi, Matt at etrailer. Today we're gonna be talking about the Thule Roof Rack on our 2020 Ford Ranger. Now, this is gonna be a great option if you're looking for something that's gonna have a really sleek design for your roof, especially if you want to carry those longer items like kayaks or ladders. So let's take a closer look at it. Now, there's gonna be a lot of different ways you can carry accessories, items in your truck. You have a bed, you can pull a trailer behind you.
The thing with pulling a trailer behind you though is it's gonna really take up a pretty wide footprint. And if you have, let's say like a tonneau cover, like I have on right now, if you have any taller accessories, then it's gonna be harder to put that back here, especially with a shorter bed like we have today. That's where this ladder rack, or this roof rack comes into hand. I think a ladder rack can be really nice on top of here, especially for the extra long items, if you sort of wanna make like a platform sort of thing. But if you just have anything like a kayak, like I was talking about earlier, or skis or a bike rack, I think that fits really nicely up here.
Now, what I like about the Thule one, specifically, compared to other roof racks out there is to me this is gonna be the best looking one and it's just really easy to work with. So up top, we're gonna have our 53 inch long crossbar. What's nice about this is it's gonna have a T-channel on top that has this weather stripping in here, so no type of debris, water gets in here. Great if you have any T-channel accessories. And to make that process easier is we have this cap at the end of it that folds over to the side, making it super easy to put those items on.
A lot of other roof racks don't have that as an option. (end cap clicks) They'd have that T-Channel but not that type of design for the end cap. Now, for the tower that's gonna sit right beneath here, (panel clicks) we're gonna have this really simple design where we're just gonna have one bolt in here that synchs everything together. The way that works is we have a clamp that grabs onto the gutter (door slams) of your door, and it's gonna sit very flush on your roof. And, (panel clicks) you'll notice we don't really have any gaps underneath here, which is something we're looking for.
'cause one, it let's us know we have a really good hold on top of here and it's also gonna prevent any wind noise. (panel clicks) And with this end cap, you'll notice we have a plastic circle here for the moment, but you can get this replaced with a metal locking core. So if you have any other Thule accessories, you can get 'em keyed alike. You can also put clamp-on accessories on here too. So let me get a measurement of underneath the bar. That's gonna be a little bit under three inches. (tape measure clicks) So that lets you know if you have any really bulky clamps, how much space you're gonna have. In most cases that's gonna be plenty. If it's a very large clamp, it might be a little bit tight underneath there to tighten everything down into place. Now, for the total height they sit up, this is gonna be at about four inches. (tape measure clicks) So they're fairly low profile. They're gonna sit underneath your antenna. Now, if you have anything extra large, let's say a rooftop tent, definitely watch out for this 'cause you don't want them to make contact with that antenna. You might have to remove it in some cases. And for the crossbar spread that we have, this is gonna be a little bit over 32 inches. (tape measure whizzes) So, that's gonna be pretty standard for most roof rack and their accessories. So it should be compatible with most things out there. Now, speaking of those other accessories and putting 'em on here, I do recommend taking the total height of the vehicle, your crossbars, and then anything that might sit on top of there. So you know if you're gonna make it under a low clearance area like a garage. Now, this roof rack seems to be pretty sturdy. So what I'd recommend doing is just checking what your roof is rated for and then going from the lowest rated component just so you don't damage anything, especially if you're putting a lot on top of your roof. Now overall, again, I do like this one a lot. If you're looking for something that's gonna look a little bit more rugged, the one I would recommend is gonna be Rhino-Rack Sportz Crossbars because I do like the design of those. But again, they're gonna have more of a rugged design to 'em. But if you want something to look a little more sleek, like we have right here, I'd go with this instead. Now, installing is actually a fairly easy process. Most people can do it and I can walk you through that process now. To begin the installation, I like to layout all my parts. You'll also notice, I already have one of my crossbar installed. It's gonna be the same process though. So what we're gonna have is gonna be the crossbar itself. I'm gonna have the towers, the end caps, the bases and the hooks. We'll also have a tool to tighten everything down into place. And I do recommend having a tape measure to help make sure everything's squared off. (tape measure clatters) So what we're gonna do, is we're gonna put everything to the side. (items scrape) I'm gonna bring this crossbar a little bit closer to me and I'm gonna remove this end cap. Pressing down on that tab on the inside, (end cap clicks) pulling it off. (end cap taps) And, then we'll push this tower into place. (tower clatters) The way you do that is look on top. You'll notice that lifts up. It lifts up when I squeeze the back side of it. (tower mechanism clicks) So I'll do that, and pushing through that channel. And in the instructions you're gonna have a set number for how far this little bar here pushes inwards. This is gonna be a specified number for the front and rear crossbar, so make sure you are pairing it up to the correct one. Once you have that matched up, then we can throw that end cap back on here (end cap clicks) (crossbar clatters) and put on these bases. These rubber bases are gonna have a number on 'em, so make sure you're checking the instructions. 'cause they are gonna be at a certain point on either one of your corners. So make sure it's going in the right location and it just kind of presses down and contours to the bottom of that platform. And once we're done here, we're just gonna repeat this on the other side. And just kinda roughly place it on your roof and make sure that the thicker side is facing forward. It doesn't have to be perfect at this stage, but just kind of roughly putting it on and lowering it down. And really the goal is once we get our measurements, we want these rubber sections to kind of grab onto this ridge, right up here. And when we do go find those measurements, there's gonna be two measurements you get. The first one is gonna be the top of your windshield to the very front of the front crossbar, right here. The second measurement you're gonna get is from the very front of this crossbar to the front of your rear crossbar. And that's where these are gonna be sitting. Grab this clamp and we're gonna come over here. Everything's in place now. You're gonna lift up on the end of it. If this is a little bit tight, you can always just loosen it up with your included tool. Push it in there And you may have to apply a little bit of pressure. What I'll do is typically pull down on the tower and push up with my thumbs on the clamp (mechanism clicks) until it clicks into place. And then you'll grab that tool and tighten that bolt that's in there. Now, what I'd recommend doing is doing this until it just has a little bit of resistance here in the side. Once there's a little resistance, then we'll go over to the other side, repeat that same process, and we're gonna go back and forth tightening it down. The reason why we're gonna go back and forth is 'cause if you tighten it too much from one side, it's gonna pull a little bit more to one side. So to prevent that, just do it evenly. And the way you're gonna be able to tell if this is all the way tightened down or not is when you're turning this, eventually you're gonna hear a click (tool clicks) just like that. So once you hear that a couple times, you're pretty much good to go. Come over here with your end cap, (end cap clicks) push it on here, lock it into place, and then give the good shake test. (door slams) Make sure it's not gonna go anywhere. And if it feels pretty good, you can take it out for a ride. Now, if you guys have any other questions, let us know here at etrailer. I think Thule products are painfully pricey......however the rack I put on my Ram 2500 is flawless and a absolute perfect fit. I added the Thule rack for the roof of the truck. I have a truck bed utility custom rack and it wasnt enough. I carry a 16' heavy canoe and a 12' kayak so the additional crossbars make for a very sturdy and dependable way to carry since we also tow a trailer. Very happy to have it.
Customer Service at etrailer is par none, both before the sale and after. I had an unpleasant experience elsewhere buying and installing a roof rack for my old Prius. After a few days of frustrations, I sent it back to that old online store.
This time, I contacted etrailer to see what ALL I needed to install a rack on my new 2018 Honda CRV. They sent me the part numbers and a link to purchase. Viola! After they arrived, I had difficulty with one of the parts (at 69 yo my hands are not too strong or flexible) and contacted etrailer. They sent pictures and more thorough instructions on installing the rubber strip. Another VIOLA!

Installing the roof rack went well. Estimate start to finish was about 2 hours. Found it best to really examine each diagram in Thule’s step by step instructions to get it all right on the first try.
Hardness part of the installation was getting the crossbars installed at the proper distances. A tailor’s soft measuring tape & some masking were great aids.
The package was shipped in its OEM box with no additional protection. As such the Thule Aero wing cross bars were both dented on one side. Not sure if I received a return or if the product was dented in shipping as there was a significant amount of packing tape on the dented side. Either way, the end caps wouldn’t fit into the dented cross bars until I cut away plastic from the end caps. For $XXX+ dollars you think that would buy more shipping protection. Unbelievable, really.
Superb quality. Of course, it is from Thule and they are expensive for sure. But, you really get what you pay for!
And, just consider how expensive it would be if using something more affordable (cheap generic brand) and the racks/bars take off from the roof with the box on the highway!
These will not take off, super sturdy and fits the car perfectly.
Just be sure to get the right kit.
And follow the paper instructions coming along the parts.

So far its the best roof rack you can get today! Had no issues when driving through rugged and bumpy terrains all day.
I've owned this roof rack for a year now, and it has served my purposes (carrying my kayak around on my truck) quite well. It was fairly easy to assemble, largely because the entire instruction guide was in pictures.
I have had to retighten the rack a couple of times since putting it on the roof, so I tie the kayak down to the front and back of the truck as well as to the roof rack. I suspect the ocean kayak puts a bit of lift on the roof rack resulting in the loosening.
The bars are strong and fairly quiet, especially considering that I mount them on the main cab of my pickup truck and not on top of the canopy. My biggest concern is that the rubber strip that runs the length of the bar to reduce wind noise was badly damaged when I slid my canoe up on to the bars. Given the weight of the canoe, I'm accustomed to getting one end on a bar and sliding it back into position. Given the sensitivity of the rubber, is started pulling away from the bar and shredding when sliding the gunwales over the top of the bar. I'll try to be more careful, but a roof rack needs to be more utilitarian in my humble opinion.
I bought the Thule Evo Roof Rack to transport my kayak on my Lexus 300H. Thule will advise you on their website that his particular rack is not right for a Lexus 300H (i.e., they don't make a roof rack for a Lexus 300H); it is really for a Camry, but etrailer told me that is worked, I trusted them and they were correct. After all, a Lexus sedan is really a fancy Camry, but Thule will not acknowledge this point. It works great. Thule makes a solid product.
These bars are light weight and easy to set up. However, the measurements in the directions were not right to fit them to my vehicle, and they were really difficult to adjust once the bars were on the roof. They seem to be snug on the roof and working well, I did a test drive yesterday at varying speeds and they are secure. They don't cause any unpleasant noise - you'd forget they were on there.
It is great. I love appearance of the Thule roof rack that I install today.
I had to warranty the bars because the rubber strips that seal the attachment channel would not stay attached.

Very thorough shopping e-commerce provided by vendor to help selecting the best options to fit my truck. However the Oder updates are a bit slow and due to the time lags between changes , confirmations are confusing.
Telephone assistant was great but took long time to resolve issues by the first respondent. The second one was much better.
Items needed to support the whole set up have to be doubled checked by myself otherwise one item was missed accidentally and the answer was vendor assumed buyer’s decision is correct.
Product delivered extremely fast once all issues are cleared, this is marvelous especially the shipping is free under this promotional period.
Installation is user friendly, spent about two hours and satisfactorily completed by myself.

Items arrived later than expected despite cancelling an month long order due to waiting stock on a different set up that was in stock. Once it arrived the box was all torn up and the person that delivered it just dropped it in the garage with the boxes spilling out of the bigger box. Love Thule products, etailer and the shipping supplier not so much,
Overall solid product. The little rubber strips that fit into the top bar are relatively fragile, I installed them, pulled one out to trim about 1/8 inches of excess length and the strip deformed such that it never went back in correctly. Fortunately etrailer had replacement strips.

Thule is an excellent product and the fit on my 2017 Chevrolet Colorado is perfect. The good people at etrailer were super helpful in getting the correct fit parts to me as quickly as possible, especially during a tough year for all. I’ve found my Thule racks to be the perfect tool to take our kayaks on our adventures!
I’ve been searching for a set of crossbars for my 2021 Crosstrek. After looking at several different companys,, I decided to go with etrailer.com and get the Thule Wingbar Evo Crossbars and Evo Raised feet. Ordering was quick and shipping was even faster! Installed them in about an hour with no issues. I love the way they look, and the construction is solid. I've always trusted Thule bars. I have an old Xsporter on my truck that works really well and it has held up over time. I needed to get a Thule rack for my Jeep Grand Cherokee and found that etrailer had all the parts I needed specified for my model. That was one of my favorite things about the site. No need to search around for the different parts to attached onto the factory rails. Once I received the rack and components, it was really easy to install. I pretty much watched the etrailer videos before hand.
I have the older Hullavator 897XT to haul my kayak in. With the WingBar Evo, I found I needed to get a slightly longer bolt (6-1.00 x 30), which I got from the local Ace hardware store, to attached the Hullavator support bracket to the WingBar. Once I got those bolts set up, I was on the water with the kayak the next day.
Talked to the customer service a few times and they are great friendly people. And I can understand what they are saying.
53” Thule bars fit our 2021 RAV4 Hybrid! Most people appear to be using 47” bars for the 2021 RAV4 with flush roof rails, but that’s smaller than I wanted. I sometimes carry a sheet of plywood, or a kayak plus a cargo box, and wanted a wider rack for that. I had heard that upsizing to the 53” bar was potentially not possible because the mounting slots on the bottom of the bar may not accommodate the rail locations relative to the bar length. ETrailer helped me out with some dimensions, so I bought the 53” bar knowing it would be close. There is only about a quarter inch of play on either side on the rear bar, but it fit (the front bar had more play, since the towers are a bit further apart at the front).
I’m SO happy with the result! Now I can carry what I want on the rack, and have room to spare! It looks pretty good too!
