Today we'll be taking a look at the Equal-i-zer Thin Walled Socket for Equal-i-zer Hitches, part number EQ70-00-4800. Traditional sockets particularly when tightening a ball to your weight distribution system have a hard time getting in to where they need to be. The Equal-i-zer socket with its low profile thin wall drops right into place. As you can see here, we have a traditional socket here on the left with a thicker wall and on the right, we have our Equal-i-zer socket with a thin wall. Though it has a thin wall, it's just as sturdy as your traditional sockets. It's a twelve-point socket with a three quarter inch drive so you need to be sure that your torque wrench has a three quarter inch drive or you may need an adapter. Now we'll go in and show you how to use it.
We've got our hitch ball and our weight distribution system here. We're going to flip around over to gain access to our nut. Our Equal-i-zer socket is just going to drop right down in place. Now we can grab our torque wrench. You want to set your torque wrench to whatever your manufacturer recommends for your hitch ball.
Now we'll need to immobilize the other side of the ball. It's not a bad idea to get an extra set of hands to do so. Perfect. Now we can just flip it back over and continue setting up our weight distribution system. If this we're just a standard ball mount, we'd be ready to tow.

I’ve tried a few sockets, this one fits the equalizer hitch the best. It’s a little expensive though.
High quality socket. Price is kind of ridiculous.

Fits my Equalizer brand hitch. It’s a tight fit, so I’m glad I did not take a chance on a cheap socket.
The 12k Equalizer Weight Distribution Hitch is an AWESOME product and did all it said it would do. Bombed hills, kept my ride steady, and most important kept my family safe on the SoCal/NorCal roads more than 28 hrs of driving north to the redwoods @ Jedidiah Smith then back south again. Next trip coming up quick in a week getting ready for another adventure. With the new EQ WDH set up is a snap! Thank you etrailer Team for all the help and great pricing! See you on the road.
This is the second equalizer hitch I’ve owned, the first was for a smaller camper. Both have performed flawlessly. I think the most important thing is to size the hitch properly for the load, then follow the directions during installation and you won’t have problems. Always torque ball to prevent catastrophic loss of trailer. This happened to me with a uhaul years ago and I can tell you it becomes a handful in a hurry.

Socket was delivered as promised and appears to be high quality. It’s unfortunate that Equalizer designs their product so that you need to buy a proprietary socket to put together but that’s not trailers fault
Worked perfect along with a pipe wrench and cheater bar to tighten the ball to my new 14k Equalizer WDH!
Wish it was a little taller to make it easier to swing a wrench.
Its a socket, plain and simple 6 sided socket. but a regular socket does not fit in area where large fastener is located on equalizer hitch. An on the ball engineer could have designed hitch and access to fastener so regular socket would fit, but then you wouldn't need to buy an accessory to install hitch would you.

Its still a socket Which once youve setup the hitch for your tow vehicle to trailer is not needed. As long as ball size change is not required socket is not used. Find a mechanic who has the tools and pay them to tighten ball hitch.
Fit perfect, gotta have the thin walled socket to fit the equalizer hitch. Quality made socket will last for years.
This fit perfectly to remove and install tow balls on my equalizer head assembly. And easily torqued (430 ft lbs) per installation instructions. If I need to change the tow ball again, I’m glad I have this in my tool box.
I installed the 12,000 lb. Equalizer myself. the instructions were explicit. After thoroughly reading the instructions, the installation took a little over an hour. I took my Travel trailer for a short ride, about 40 miles round trip. It was a windy day although I was extremely impressed with the performance of the 4 point sway hitch and cannot believe the difference between that and my old hitch with the chain and sway bar system. Money well spent. Looking forward to going across country in a few months.
What can I say...it's a standard 3/4" drive 1 7/8" socket. I actually did not need a thin walled socket to install the ball on my WD hitch (an impact socket would have worked), but that is only because of the design. It is always better to be over prepared when you start installing things, rather than find out you need to now go buy a tool to finish the install. If you are looking at this product then it is probably because you need to install a ball with a 1 1/4" shank. Make certain you have a torque wrench that can handle it (450 ft lb). Don't "gun it down" with an impact gun because the torque from them (if you have it set) is plus or minus 25% on a good day. Since this is a critical connection, do it right.
I am very pleased with my Equal-i-zer Sway Control hitch. Installation was relatively easy. You really do need the thin wall socket to install the ball. Levels my 3/4 ton truck out very well with my loaded 14,000 lb bumper pull trailer. Main reason I got it was for the sway control for 1000 mile trips. It amazes me. Jerk the trailer one direction and it comes back to the middle and stops. Very nice!
etrailer had what I needed when others could not deliver. It is a shame that I went thru [camping retailer] and they sold me a hitch with out the ball for the hitch while I was traveling and then refused to install the hitch because I opened the box. etrailer is the only one that I trust, they were informative and got me what I needed in a reasonable amount of time. This socket is pretty much necessary to install a ball on the Equal-i-zer hitch head. I also had to source a 3/4 drive extension for my torque wrench to clear the head, which was an unexpected expense (not to mention a hard to find part!). It's pricey, especially for something you're likely to only use once as a hobbyist RV owner, but it's in-line with other similar tools, and it's getting harder and harder to find RV shops willing to take on little jobs like torquing a ball to a hitch head.
Other than that, it's a socket. It did it's job, and held up to over 400 lb/ft with no issues.
It is what it is - a 1 7/16th socket but it solves the problem (regular sockets won't fit into the hitch to tighten up the trailer ball on equal-i-zer hitches because they are too thick.
Pricey at $60, but I am not one to take an existing socket and grind it down. Just not worth it to me.

Exactly what you need to tighten the hitch ball on your equalizer hitch. Its thin enough to fit in between the stabilizer bars. Trust me, you're unlikely to find it anywhere locally. Just order it here.
Immediately after placing the order I was notified the product was not in stock and I was given an expected ship date. I was updated several times during my wait and to my surprise the package showed up a few days earlier than expected. I haven't yet installed the item but it arrived in good condition even though one box was broken open due to the weight of the items inside. Luckily all contents were accounted for.
Product is very sturdy and in great condition with no scratches or shipping damage.

I ordered this because the web site specified this socket was needed to attach the ball to a 6000 lb Equalizer hitch. However, a smaller socket is required for a ball that matches the hitch capacity (2") so it did not work. You should inform people that if you buy a smaller ball then a smaller thin wall socket is needed.
Ordered a new Curt truck hitch along with the 14k Equalizer WD. Ordered at 8pm Monday and recieved 11:30am Weds. Can't get better free shipping than that! Boxes a bit beat up but no damage to parts. Parts are heavy, so not suprised. Hitch was installed in an hour and is a perfect fit but wish it had provisions for plug mount. I knew this when I ordered though. Devin took my order was very friendly and helped with everything I asked about. Will install the Equalizer next week but it looks like what was advertised and should do the job. Will use etrailer again for sure.
I Never would have paid $68 for a single socket if I wasn't surprised dealing with this on short notice!? Really, open the box read the directions and read- now you need to buy a special 1-7/8" socket. My 250# torque wrench cost me less than this single socket... this is something that should be included in the weight distribution hitch packaging. I won't be promoting this to any other Airstream or travel trailer owners, except to warn them of the impending ripped-off. Terrible product marketing. No excuse for this.
This thin-walled socket is definitely needed for installing the ball onto the equalizer hitch if assembling and setting up the hitch yourself. If you’re having the hitch assembled by a service technician, they may already have one.
Worked great for installing the hitch ball. Originally etrailer contacted me to let me know that this socket was out of stock. I needed the hitch and socket in 3 days. etrailer went out of their way to locate and ship me this socket in the original timeline.

I’m disappointed that etrailer allows people to spend $75 on this socket when it’s nothing special.
I can’t even tell that its an Equal-izer brand as there are no special tags or logos on either the bag or the socket.
It came in a standard clear baggy, no branding whatsoever. Disount Harware store repack???
Fitting it, it doesn’t even look like the right size.
It sits very sloppy on the nut and makes it look like it could strip. Comparing it to another 1 7/8” it is a standard 1 7/8” socket.
Save your money!
