Recommended Weight Distribution Shank for 1,700 lb Tongue Weight Reese Trunnion Bar System

Published 12/21/2017

Question:

I need the pole tongue adapter Reese Part # 58393, and part #58062. 1700 is not the weight of our trailer tongue. That's just the hitch we have. It was a 2nd party purchase. I felt that way we were covered for weight. lol Its a 26ft ice castle. I don't recall the tongue weight. It looks like tongue weight is around 700 and GVW is 8500 or less if that helps

There is not a pole tongue adapter compatible with a system rated for 1,700 lbs. The largest option is the Reese Pole-Tongue Adapter for Weight Distribution Systems - 14,000 lbs GTW, 1,400 lbs TW # RP58393, which will work only if your total tongue weight (loaded trailer tongue weight and any cargo behind rear axle of tow vehicle) is under that 1,400 lbs.

If you want a compatible weight distribution shank as systems this size often don't include, I recommend the Reese Titan Weight Distribution Shank - 1-1/4" Drop, 5-1/4" Rise - 1,700 lbs TW # RP54976 or the 5-3/4" drop, 8-1/4" Rise -1,700 lbs TW # RP54977.

Weight distribution system shanks can be interchangeable between companies, however that high a rating greatly limits your choices.

Got it. Weight distribution systems can be overrated for a trailer, and that would absolutely happen in your case. I definitely don't recommend using that system with that particular trailer as it would make the ride far to rigid and extremely unsafe. Here is my recommendation for you and an explanation of why. I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW # EQ37100ET which is rated for 600 to 1000 lbs. You want a system that has a total tongue weight that falls in the middle of that range. Total tongue weight is the loaded trailer tongue weight as well as any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. This system should be in the sweet spot for your application. Then because you have a pole tongue, I recommend the Pole-Tongue Adapter for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Systems - 14,000 lbs GTW, 1,400 lbs TW # EQ95-01-5950. This weight distribution system comes with the hitch ball, but you will need a 1-7/8 inch thin walled socket to install it. I recommend the # ALL643216 over the similar # EQ70-00-4800 if you don't already have one. Let me know if you have further questions.
