Question:
I have a 2024 Honda CR-V Sport Touring hybrid. My Honda dealer installed a class one 1 1/4 inch hitch receiver, electrical, and the bypass mechanism that allows the liftgate to still work. As I am looking for a new bike rack that will allow for an e-bike and my road bike I’m realizing that a class one hitch is not helpful! It sounds like this hitch would work on my car and would allow me to purchase any number of bike racks. My question - if this rack is installed, will the installer also be able to use the existing electrical and bypass mechanism or do I lose functionality of both of those? Thanks for your advice!

Hello Clare; installation of the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98848 will not interfere with the trailer wiring on your 2024 CR-V. The one thing you will want to add is the # 18144 mounting bracket for your 4-way connector since there isn't one attached to the hitch like what you have now.
I can't say for sure on the bypass mechanism since I'm not familiar with it or its location. Based on that image of the current hitch it probably installs in the same location as the etrailer hitch which would mean you won't lose functionality. Hitch installation usually doesn't cause a complete loss of sensor functionality one way or another.
Either way, this is the best option to allow for a bike rack with a higher capacity like the # RKY10004 you were looking at. I'm not sure how heavy your bikes are but another popular bike rack is the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HLY84FR. This has a capacity of 80 lbs per bike which covers most e-bike models.

Hi Clare, how did things go with the etrailer hitch on your CR‑V and the liftgate bypass mechanism? Did everything continue to work as expected after the new hitch was installed? Your update could make it easier for others upgrading from a class one hitch.
