Question:

I have a 2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE non hybrid and am looking to get a hitch installed and buy a hitch rack and transport some e mtbs. Emtbs are 50-60 lbs so not sure how many I can transport safely from my home to the trails. I’d like to transport 3 but someone was talking about tongue weight and I have no idea. Someone recommended this site for guidance

Hi Rohit,

For your 2019 RAV4 XLE, you need the Curt Class III 2 inch hitch part # C77MJ, and I’d pair it with the RockyMounts MonoRail part # RKY10004. I’d also stick with carrying two e bikes instead of three. The Curt hitch itself is rated much higher, but your RAV4 is the limiting factor here at around 150 lbs of tongue weight unless you have the Adventure trim. With 50 to 60 lb e bikes, two is where I’d be comfortable if this were my RAV4.

The MonoRail is a great fit for those heavier bikes since it can handle up to 60 lbs per bike and holds them by the wheels instead of clamping onto the frames. It's also one of the lightest weight bike rack options we carry which is why it's a good option for your RAV4. It also has a lifetime limited warranty and a built in locking system. We have tested it on a RAV4 like yours and it works really well especially the tilting feature which allows you to access the rear cargo area with the bikes still on the rack. That's super convenient on a hot day when you need to get to your cooler.

Typically with a few riding buddies. Thanks for the detailed answer!! I think the idea would be to put two bikes in the tray and maybe take off the front wheel and put the third bike in the rear

@RohitR That sounds like a great way to do it, Rohit! Keeping two bikes on the rack and putting the third inside the RAV4 with the front wheel removed would be a much better setup than trying to hang all three off the hitch. That keeps the weight on the hitch down while still letting the whole crew get out to the trails. Glad I could help, and I hope you guys get some good rides in!
