Video Transcript for Let’s Check Out the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II

Randy: Hey guys, Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox line of hitch immobilizers. Now, these work out great in a lot of situations. Any time you're using an accessory in a receiver tube opening and it doesn't have an anti-rattle device on it, basically you get a lot of movement. Especially with cargo carriers, we get a lot of side to side movement, that weight transferring back and forth. Now before we get to the installation process, let's take a look at some of the test course footage before and after. Essentially, before we get this installed, you're going to see this cargo carrier move side to side quite a bit.

We've got it loaded down with about 120 pounds. That's when we're doing the slalom. As we go over the bumps, you'll see this back end tip up quite a bit. Now, the cargo carrier's going to have a little bit of that anyway, but we're eliminating all of that from the shank, so it keeps everything much more stable. Now you'll see in the after-footage, all that side to side movement is completely eliminated. Once we get into the bumps, you can see there's still a little bit there from the actual cargo carrier tolerance, but we've got nothing coming from the hitch. Now regardless of whether you're using a 2" hitch or 2-1/2" hitch, or what we've got installed here going from a 2-1/2" hitch with an adapter to a 2" accessory, they're all going to work the same way.

This part with the key stock comes in on the backside. Then this U-bolt you can see, as we tighten that down, it pulls down on the accessory. This U-bolt pulls over. That's going to lock it right into the side of our receiver tube opening. Especially when we're using adapters like this, there's so much slop in that system, everything moves side to side.

You can see it's nice, heavy duty steel construction with a black powder coat finish. Blue Ox always makes good products. Then we've got the zinc-coated U-bolts. They use locking Whiz nuts here. As we get everything tightened down, we really don't have to worry about it coming back apart.

Just does a great job in getting that set. The 2" by 2" version looks identical. This is the 2-1/2 by 2-1/2. Basically, it just takes all that discomfort and all that play and that movement out of the equation so you don't have to deal with it anymore. Now another option's the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch. This one, where the Blue Ox doesn't have an 1-1/4" fit, does have an 1-1/4" fit. Has a 2" and a 2-1/2" fit. Basically, this one, this loop goes down around the hitch. This bar is going to come down and press down on the item. Now I like this one quite a bit. On really heavy loads, on your really heavy trailers, or in really heavy flat tow setups, maybe you're hauling a 1500 4x4 Ram, it gets pretty heavy. This one only eliminates the up and down. It eliminates most of the side to side, but as items get really heavy, there is still a little bit of transfer or a little bit of motion side to side. I really like the Quiet Hitch. I think it does a great job. But for total containment, I think the Blue Ox is just a little bit better. Now for all of immobilizers, the installation process is going to be the same. This is the one that fits the 2-1/2" hitch down to a 2" product or 2" accessory. You've got the small lips here. It's going to sit in behind the lip of our hitch. We want to bring it right out to the edge of it. We've got a U-bolt that's going to go in this way. Place our nuts on there. Then we've got our U-bolt that's going to come in from the top. Same thing, throw our nuts on there. Now we want to grab a 9/16" socket and we're going to start tightening these down. It's going to help to pull over on the shank and also pull down on the shank just to help us ensure that we got a great hold on them. Now we're going to grab our torque wrench, want to get all four of those torqued down.As you guys can see, this takes care of a very common problem that we have. I really like this one. I like that it has the total containment on both sides. Really helps to eliminate that movement we experience. I think if you're having that issue or if you've got heavier items that you're loading up and you can feel that transfer, I think it's a great idea to pick one up.

Used this anti rattle two camping season. Needed heady duty for a four foot extension bar.attached to extension bar is an ebike carrier. Carrier holds an eighty lb ebike. With this anti rattle, attached to extension bar and receiver on truck,no rattle and very little movement. I can drive on highways with confidence.

Easy to install and works like a champ. Added bonus, when you have an expensive hitch attached, is more security.

Great product, Worked very well on my long neck Torsion bare Hitch. E trailer's sales consultant Bridget was very helpfull, very knowledgeable. E trailer was very fast about getting me the part i needed. I am very pleased not only with the product but very pleased with E trailer. I have been recommending E trailer to my friends. Thanks.

Works like a charm!

by:

used it to take the sway/bounce out of the my 48" hitch extension. Worked!

by:

The stabilizer used with the double 2" hitch receiver took all wobble & wiggle out of the bike rack. Excellent product!

by:

The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II, 2.5" arrived on time and without package damage. Unpacked and installed in less than 5 minutes. Zero knocking, noise, and movement of the hitch after Immobilized installed. Very Strongly Recommended.

by:

Made the thule lectric bikes (ea 65 Lbs.)on our thule bike rack much more steady less bouncing on bumps helped keeping them both more stable@

by:

The product was easy to install; didn't take more than 5 minutes. I haven't had the chance to test it with my utility trailer hooked up yet but will soon, that will be the real test as to how satisfied I am with the product.

I will say this for etrailer.com, they are awesome. I originally passed up ordering the item from etrailer.com just to save a few bucks and ordered it from another site. I had to end up cancelling the order from the other site. I ordered it last Thursday, from etrailer.com, and they bumped up my shipping at no extra cost to me so I could get the part by Monday. They didn't have to do that but they did.

All my future towing purchases will be with etrailer.com not just because they are located in my home state of Missouri but because they provide great service. I have already recommended them to friends and co-workers.

Rock solid immobilizer using the Curt 34 inch hitch extension. Truck is a 2020 GMC AT4, 3500HD with a 2021 Cirrus 820 camper.

by:

As shown and working as advertised. Stopped trailer sway and annoying clink clank clunk of the hitch. Time will tell how long it lasts. I was hoping for 1/2"- 20 threads. It is 3/8"-16. Maybe it will be strong enough for a 2 1/2" class V hitch. One thing for sure, I am going to TEST it. ;*)

by:

Got this to stop the movement in my rock tamers . Certainly did what I was looking for. No more annoying rattle driving down the road . I showed my son in-law and now he wants the same set up . Not sure I will use the loctite or not as i like taking then off when we're not pulling the 5th wheel , i was thinking of changing the nuts to locking nuts . E trailer knew just what i was looking for and got it to me a day earl .

by:

I used to have a little forward and back movement in my hitch receiver. I could feel a clunk when leaving from a stop and then again while coming to a stop. I added this hitch immobilized and it all went away. I’ve had it on for close to a year now and wouldn’t tow with out it.

by:

The product looks well made but it will not fit on a 2022 ram 2500 pickup. Unfortunately I will need to return. Not enough clearance between the hitch and safety chain hookups. Would need to cut out the existing safety chain hookups and re-weld new steel plates. But the gen y iron grip hitch pin do work ok

by:

Item works great! We actually use it inverted to hold the hitch up on our weight distribution hitch for our 9,000lb travel trailer. We used it on 3,000+ mile trip that went through the Rocky Mountains and it did not show even a hint of working loose. I would definitely recommend it!

by:

I have a mixed feeling about the product as it does not fit the application I purchased it for. My Dodge RAM 3500 Diesel 4x4 bumper does not provide the clearance for me to install this product and I specifically purchased the product that is supposed to fit. I have not returned it as I may do some trimming to either my bumper or the receiver hitch [plastic guard].

As to the product itself, it is technically very sound and I can see that the method by which Blue Ox has chosen to eliminate rattling of the receiver hitch is very well thought out. The product itself would rate a five star review, but the fact that it doesn't fit the application for which it was ordered, part number appropriate, impacts my overall rating.

So, application rates a two star, doesn't fit as intended.
Product construct rates a five.
Service support, price and delivery rates a five as well.
Therefore overall rates a sound four considering all the above.
I hope you fully understand why and my rationale for this lower than usual rating for product I've purchased from you all.

My very best regards, and sincerely your service support and delivery always rates a five star!

by:

Much heavier duty than I anticipated.

by:

Hitch began rattling again after 2 months. It bent and no longer stays tight.

by:

So far so good it seems. I just put it on today. But the design looks like its about the best on the market. With the only exception being it recommended I use the "Loctite Red" on all screws. I don't have any on hand, and it would be cool if you could include it in the package. I'm planning on stopping by the autoparts store and seeing if they have a small container I could use. Other than that, it looks to be well designed. I expect it to work great.

by:

Works great! No movement at all.

That's awesome to hear, Peter! What are you hauling?

by:

Put this on my 2018 Jeep Wrangler which has a two inch hitch receiver plus a hitch extender. The outside dimension of the hitch extender is 2 1/2" so that's why I went with this product instead of the 2" one. This one fits perfectly and the hitch extender is now very snug, no movement at all.

by:

Easy to mount, secure and enjoy a rattle free ride. Works as advertised on the hitch receiver of my 9000 lbs trailer. Looks great

It is working great. A year later and it still looks like new and functions as advertised. Never have to worry about rattles in the hitch area any more.

Ram Trucks Require Modification
This
is the best item of this type I have found. Unfortunately it does not work on trucks like my 2018 Ram 3500 without modification. The first photo shows my old unit after five years of use. Note the notch on one side to fit over the chain hook plate on the Ram hitch. After notching I rotated it 180 degrees to make it work. The unit was worn and a portion of a tab broke off. The second photo shows the new unit and how it cannot fit on the Ram hitch if installed in the recommended position. I contacted Blue Ox and they denied there is a problem. The response said in part, "I heard back from the engineer and he hasn’t heard of this issue before either." There are plenty of reviews disclosing this problem. I also asked them about my modification and was told "What you choose to do with the product is up to you we cant recommend any modification." I recommend this product and will continue using it with a modification, but what is wrong with corporate America? What ever happened to customer service? What happened to engineers?

by:

Will not fit my 2024 Ram 3500. There is not enough room on top and the sides. I purchased a standard 2-1/2" stabilizer and it fits tight but works in both directions and even locks in my old 2" hitch with an adaptor pictured below.

by:

Perfect!! I mean Totally perfect! Using it to stabilize my Blue Ox 2.5 weight Distribution Pro with 2.5” Shank w/ the Drop hitch (9 hole). Fits like a glove between (and over) the lip of the receiver opening on my 2020 Silverado 2500 HD and tucks in perfectly (by a millimeter or two) in front of the massive welded angle support on the underside of the BlueOx shank, I mean it looks and fits like the truck, the hitch and this new stabilizer had been manufactured at the same time to fit together as a set. Truly remarkable. And performance wise… ZERO slop in the hitch now… feels like it’s welded together with this stabilizer in place

Wow, thanks for the fantastic review! We're thrilled to hear the stabilizer was such a perfect fit with your Blue Ox weight distribution hitch and your 2020 Silverado 2500 HD. It sounds like everything came together exactly as you hoped, and we're especially glad to hear it eliminated all the slop in the hitch. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, and we hope it continues to provide a solid, rattle-free tow for many miles to come!

  • Does The etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar e38FV Work For A 2-1/2" Hitch Receiver?
Hello Gary, thanks for reaching out. The etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar # e38FV is only for a 2" receiver. It will not work with the 2-1/2" hitches. We do hope to make a version for a 2-1/2" hitch in the future, but that is a good ways down the line. If you need an anti-rattle device for a 2-1/2" hitch we do have the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-062 or the Blue Ox Immobilizer # BX88225. Both are U-bolt style ant-rattle clamps. just comment below and let me know if you have any questions...

Hey Tommy, thanks for reaching out. Here is the best anti-rattle device for a 2-1/2" hitch: - Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II - 2-1/2" Hitches # BX88225 Here's why; this anti-rattle device uses two U-bolts. One to pull the shank down, and another to pull it either left or right. This adds tension from two directions and just does a fantastic job eliminating any and usually all slack at the receiver. It can be used with really any 2-1/2" hitch and shank so it'll work great with...

Hey Peter, I wish that were possible but the L-bracket of the Blue Ox Immobilizer II is a different size between the 2 inch version that you have now and the 2.5 inch version part # BX88225. This means you would need to replace the entire kit as no portion of it would work with the larger hitch size. How did you like the Immobilizer on your 2 inch hitch setup?

Hey Eric, is the trailer sitting level or is it maybe too nose down in the front? Typically this is caused by a trailer that is sitting low in the front or too much tongue weight relative to the total trailer weight. It should be between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight.

Hello Eldon, thanks for reaching out. The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II # BX88225 can indeed be used on your 2023 Chevy 1500 as long as it has a 2-1/2" receiver. It will work on virtually any standard 2-1/2" hitch receiver. The Immobilizer II is especially nice because it provides both horizontal and vertical tension.

We do have other anti rattle devices that we carry, but nothing specifically designed to limit fore/aft movement. If you have already tried The Blue Ox immobilizer # BX88312, I'm afraid I do not have a more effective anti rattle device that I can offer you. The immobilizer is pretty much the best of the best. The u-bolts on the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II part # BX88225 are only 3/8" diameter so as long as you have this much space it will work. That said, you will need to measure as we have not yet tested this. If it won't work we do still have an option in the Gen-Y Iron Grip Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin part # GY99FR which doubles as a lock and anti-rattle. Check out the review video I did below.

We do offer hitch extensions in various lengths to fit 2-inch and 2-1/2-inch truck hitches. These are shown on the linked page. The issue with hitch extensions is that they typically cause a loss of hitch capacity, a 50-percent loss! This happens due to the additional leverage applied by the extension to the hitch tube. This is much like slipping a pipe over the end of a tire iron to give you more leverage to loosen a lug nut. For this reason very long extensions such as the 60-inch TorkLift...
