Question:
I have a 09 gmc 3500 with a factory install class 5 2-1/2receiver. It has what seems to me to be more play than I would expect. How much play would you say is acceptable and safe? Does there come a time when the receiver needs to be replaced because of to much slop.

Expert Reply:
Some accessories fit more loosely than others in any given trailer hitch. If you think that the receiver is getting worn out, I recommend measuring the inner opening width and height to see if it is still at 2-1/2 inches.
Also check the accessories you are using. They should be slightly smaller so they can fit in the receiver easily. There will always be some play. The longer the accessory, the more it will appear to move. The Titan extension # RP45018 as an example is so long that a little movement at the receiver means that the far end moves much more.
Using an anti-rattle device like # BX88225 is my recommendation. It is going o reduce that rattle and slop while providing added support.
